I've been playing for three years now and still frequently pick the wrong string. It's extremely frustrating it seems like the strings are too close together. I don't have this problem on bass.

Ima beginner and I want to get faster fretting and picking. People say use a metronome and I don’t even know how to use that. My playing got a bit faster though still really slow. What should I practice, focus on, etc

I'm pretty much in the same boat as far as not knowing how to use a metronome to practice. What I've been doing is just going over the patterns slowly til I get it down then just start playing it faster til I can't without it sounding like crap... Then I back off try to figure what went wrong. I've done a crap load of alternate picking and string crossing practice. That's helped ALOT. Idk if you watch Ben Eller's channel but he's friggin awesome and he's supposed to be making a video about how to practice with a metronome here real soon.

Please get yourself a metronome it takes getting use to it but in the long run it will help you keep time.

Prioritise accuracy over speed. Speed is a biproduct to an extent but for higher speeds you will need to work more on hand- synchronization and specifically speed.

a metronome is just playing to a beat theres some apps that are free i use soundbrenner as for what to practice i would say the kind of music you like determines that at least technique wise

Get it so that you can play 4 notes between each beat of the metronome, this will make you faster

Playing should sound good, practicing not necessarily. Practicing means that you go over a micro segment over and over and over (and over) again. Practicing a scale is not really musical and doesn't sound good, but it builds the foundation for playing.

In my experience, your guitar playing is in trouble if you are playing by literally anyone else's directions except for your own instincts that you gain by listening to music.

Not when it comes to technique. Theres been a lot of stuff I have had to unlearn because I just played without looking into any technique for 6 years. Some people naturally get tge fundamentals of guitar right and they can practise properly, but if your foundations are wrong then everything you play is gonns suffer
