Thanks for the tips, "Directional picking" works! I can now play this fast without mistake. very good advice not to use the arm but wrist only and the pick should brush "away" down.

@@naegleriafowleri2230 It is only a lack of technique is pure alternate picking is your ultimate goal and you do not have enough practice time in your lifetime to master BOTH techniques. Your same logic can apply to those who sweep arpeggios instead of alt. pick each note, but sweeping is a technique that works when trained properly. If a technique works, it works, and the audience is only going to care if they are comprised of critics and guitarists. There are no police that are going to arrest anyone for playing the Paul Gilbert lick with economy of motion as opposed to the five animals of wrist kung fu. I sympathize and wish we all had enough free time to master every single form of kung fu of picking mechanics. If I could, I'd alternate pick AND directional pick these types of licks every day until I could play them on camera with my eyes closed. I know Micheal Angelo Batio can do that blindfolded. Perhaps Bernth can. I can't, but hopefully you can! Don't get me started on hybrid picking and how adding that to economy picking is like taking steroids for some players such as Marshall Harrison and Tosin Abasi (two different schools of swybrid logic). The ultimate end of technique have certain obvious nitches that open different doors. Know those ends, and plan your goals accordingly.

@@naegleriafowleri2230 this. directional and economy picking is not good if you want to build pick attack without relying on amp settings, there is a reason why extremely fast players like petrucci and gilbert have distinct pick attack sounds, it is because they are using strict alternative picking. the power does not come from directional picking, only speed at the cost of power.

Yeah but lots of people can alternate Pick as fast as Paul Gilbert .. it’s just feels better to alternate pick .
@Matthew_Klepadlo
@Matthew_Klepadlo Жыл бұрын
@@aeterna7990 That is just completely wrong. If your pick attack is bad with directional picking, then that means your sense of articulation is wrong, not directional picking. You’re not sacrificing power at the cost of speed, you’re just using a more efficient motion for your hands. JP and PG’s articulation isn’t incredible because of alternate picking, it’s incredible because their sense of articulation is already incredible. If they used economy picking or directional picking, their pick attack would sound exactly the same, given enough time to practice. Besides, directional picking is just objectively faster than alternate picking, and you’re utilizing the economical motions of economy picking to replace the most awkward parts of alternate picking.

I seen another video that briefly mentioned the Paul Gilbert lick. I've been playing something very similar to this since the mid 80's. The only difference is I start on the 4th note and do the run that way. It was something I stumbled across, and used as a warm up exercise for years. It's one of the licks that got me playing very fast. So I started incorporating it in my solos with various scales.
@iganpparamarta8813

Excellent. You play it cleaner than Paul. He actually hits the other string but cleverly mutes it with the tip of his index finger. I didn't realise this when I was learning the famous Intense Rock I lick back in mid 2000s and almost frustrated because of that almost inaudible 'chirps' sound when crossing the string. But then youtube came and some youtuber did a breakdown of PG 4 notes picking lick and all was clear from then.

I think something important to note about this that he is actually playing although he believes he is doing an up and down flexion and extension motion he is actually doing a rotational movement. This is known as supination and pronation. This is a really important thing to note because it is a much more efficient movement for fast picking and will have less tension and strain. A lot of people end up doing this movement naturally without realizing it like he has here.

Mike, I love your videos, and I love your advise. What I think the missing link is not so much these short licks, but more about long sequences across the strings. I have recently discovered that I’m finding descending scales and scale sequences a lot easier than ascending. I think it’s an issue with my pick depth which I’m doing my best to relax but getting fast with no anchor point (which you disagree with) is the issue. I’m also thinking that when I move my arm position for string 4 and 3, I’m getting out of sync. I’m not sure why it’s happening but I’m definitely improving. Keep the lessons coming!
@tartanhandbag
@tartanhandbag 2 жыл бұрын
i have a similar problem, although actually the opposite in some ways: i find ascending easier than descending. i think this is possibly due to having played with a strong pick slant for the first 10 years of playing. you likely have the opposite pick slant position to me. anyway, i have the same problem of going out of sync at the same string jump. i find that slowing down and really feeling and even over-emphasising the note where i lose control. it kinda become a meditation on feeling that transition where that becomes the main focus of the exercise and the other notes you're not thinking about so much

@@HowToPracticeGuitar: I can't help but notice that your pick makes a LOT of NOISE! Is that due to the pick you use, or because you insist on Directional Picking? I don't like the noise, it's annoying. It hides the musical notes. But I'm also not really into "shredding." I'd rather hear actual music, not just repetitive fast scales. Notes that I can hear, that have flavor. Sometimes a "run" is a part of the music. But not just all runs, that's just frantic note diarrhea.

It’s so interesting that you are inside picking this lick, I’m pretty sure Paul specifically uses that as an outside picking exercise. I’m also naturally an inside picker and it’s not helpful for most songs because most people are outside pickers generally

That's correct, he's downpicking the higher string which is not how Paul does it. Paul uppicks the higher string and downpicks the first note on the lower string

"Demands"?? You say it like he's not gonna be able to get a goodnight sleep until you approve of his teaching😂😂 brother if you're gonna stick to strict alternate picking just because it's familiar no one's stopping you but know that it's only simple physics that makes directional picking infinitely more efficient if you open your mind for a sec and take a close look at it, you'll have no reason to go back to strict alternate picking and spend triple the time trying to play a sequence up to speed as soon as you switch to directional picking.

If you notice the jumps in the video, it's cuz he edits out space where he breaths or pauses. I know pretty YT-ers that do that, I guess they think speaking constantly is better. (It's not, esp for the listener.) It's very tiring to listen to! 😢
