My biggest problems are: 1): Consistency, finding and making time to surf or unable to surf when the conditions are suitable 2): Giving waves to others ie more experienced surfers. They paddle faster, so I can't argue with them. I let them have the waves 3): My pop up - maybe it's my board or bad wave selection. Most times I somehow still have one knee on the deck. Strangely I manage to stand up, although a bit wobbly, I settle down and have a short ride 4): I pop up too late. I do not seem to be able to pop up in time. It feels like someone is pushing hard on my body until I ride the white water for a long time. I ride Al Merrick 6'8", 21 3/4, 3" inch. Plenty of volume. I was better before. But after injuries from other sports, lack of practice, etc I have gone backwards. I am thinking of getting a 9'4" and starting again. Swallow my pride and just accept that I am a very slow progressing beginner. Life gets in the way most times, if I surf once a fortnight, that is lucky.

After open heart surgery I got myself an 8' Wave Bandit foamie to help build my strength and confidence back up. I'm about 180 lbs & 6' tall and actually could have gone with a shorter board - they have a lot of float. Foamies can be great fun & with shorter fins shallow water is no problem - plus they're cheaper. Stick with it and have lots of fun!
@HerbertFitzgerald4 жыл бұрын
My best tip on popping up (without the wobble) is to press your hands flat on the deck. Do it like a pushup, that way the pressure is distributed over a larger area. Also, there's a sweet spot on popping up. Time it right (basically as soon as you've paddled enough to catch the wave) and you can actually feel the wave pulling you upward toward the lip. This is when you should pop up, as the forces are helping you to do so. When you get it right, you'll know that you've done it correctly by the feeling.

Get a mini mal with little bit more volume, lot of issue your have are because of lack of volume, due to lack of paddle power. train explosive pop on the ground it's help a lot . You some stability issue as well. You will get all this thing fixed , i took me about 1 year to start reducing my volume, +2 year more with a 6'8 , now im riding 5'8 , to 6'2 board with still lots of volume 44l max 33min.

@@HowtoRip for intermediate, talk about the beneficts of having an board with more float than necessary, i think is better to have a board with extra volume right? i am 170lbs and thinking to have a 30.5l board, to help with aerial, rotation and speed... my currently board has 29.5L.

This is such a good compact and straight to the point for beginner cuz it reassures me a lot when I thought it’s too embarrassing to surf at the waist level white water zone where I was wondering if I’m doing the right thing cuz most of the people are at the line up zone way out there to catch unbroken wave.... I’m going to practice more on the white water zone before I’m confident enough to go out there! Surfing is really not easy but it just made me to try harder .... Thank you!

Great examples!!! You guys mentioned progressing to a fish surfboard once we feel the large-size soft top is holding us back from starting to do maneuvers. At that point with a fish you can't use your toes on the surfboard deck in order to pop up. Can you show a pop-up style where you would not use your toes on the deck of the board to bring you your legs through to a surfing stance? I'm starting to transition to shortboards and my surfing balance is good once I'm up on my feet but landing the pop up without using my toes is a little bit tricky. I find myself wobbling and not getting my feet where they need to be. I can catch the waves all day long without a problem. Happy surfing 🏄 from Virginia Beach!!!+++:))) Thanks guys!!!

I live nowhere near any good beaches, the best I can do is skimboard on puddles on the beach but my skimboard is a wooden one I made my self so isn’t very good quality I am really really obsessed with surfing and want to compete professionally, is this possible with not surfing very regularly and what are some good techniques to help progress me whilst I’m not near the sea?

That's a great goal Izzi! You would want to be surfing as much as possible, most surfers who become professional are in positions where they can surf almost everyday, often multiple times a day. You could work on your fitness and use a skateboard to work on some techniques. Check out our video "The Secret To Fast Tracked Surfing Success". Goodluck!
