Ex Navy and hopefully future boat owner here. there is sth magical about being truely away from it all. atlantic is one thing and cool but the pacific crossing is BA. its really cool to be out a couple of weeks sail away from everything and jump off the ship and everyone swim around. or to be in the Gulf and see a pink sunrise. i have already circumnavigated "technically" but to do that on a boat doing 7 knots instead of 15-20. that would be very epic.

Loads of great info to anyone who like to do this crossing. One thing. You say 8000nm in 3 weeks. That will put you at an avg speed of almost 16kn. Hmmm not many sailboats will manage that!! So what sailboat are you using as a reference?

Great video! I had two questions. Maybe kinda newbie. Since you can tack into the wind (beating) via a close haul, why can you not go either route when going either direction? I understand that ships of old had to run with the wind and thus follow the appropriate passage. Does a crew (or solo sailor) stop sailing and sleep during the night?
@uberbeast1132 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about your first question. A yacht with crew will take turns to sleep or take the watch in shifts. A solo sailor should have an AIS among his electronic instruments which will sound an alarm if a vessel gets too close. This way, he can sleep. All the same it is best to wake up and scan the surroundings on a regular basis.

@@ChasingLatitudes I'm responding to the blanket statement of the best time to cross the Atlantic. If you're going from say Halifax to the azores (which you show)then you definitely do not want to go in the winter. The answer to "when is the best time to cross the Atlantic " is depends on where you are and where you're going.
@ChasingLatitudes3 жыл бұрын
@@PyeGuySailing and I felt I made the two routes incredibly specific, carribean to Bermuda and to the azores, canaries to cape verde and then to the carribean. Listed nauticle miles covered for those two specific routes as well as times to cover the miles. I also went on to clarify it also depends on your routes. I guess I could have been more specific however I honestly felt I was as specific as possible and pointed out two very specific routes that I was referring to. You are correct the blanket statement of " the Atlantic " may not have been the best choice of words but felt i went on to clarify the two routes. The Atlantic is huge and no one specific time will cover all of the routes
