Simplest Way to Remove DRM from Books - No Kindle Serial Number Needed!

**UPDATE: 30th Jan ** UPDATE 1: The Kindle for Mac 1.40.x no longer works and shows the error, "This app is no longer supported.". The current version, Kindle for Mac 7.x, has limited compatibility with calibre via the KFX Input plugin. You can download Kindle for Mac 7.x from the Mac App Store. To import eBooks, go to User > Library > Containers > Kindle > Data > Library > eBooks, and add the .azw8 file to calibre (ignore the other files). If the file imports as KFX, it’s compatible; if it imports as KFX-ZIP, sadly this book will not get converted. UPDATE 2: If you're seeing any error messages when converting the book, try the following step (make sure you're on the latest version of Calibre): Step 1. Open Calibre, go to Preferences -> Interface -> Toolbars and Menus. Select 'The main toolbar' Step 2. From 'Available Actions' find 'From KFX' option and move it with an arrow to 'Current Actions'. Apply changes. You should see 'From KFX' button in the Calibre menu. Step 3. Restart Calibre. Step 4. Within Calibre middle column of listed books, select the problematic books one at a time. Click the "From KFX" button, and select what format you want to convert them to and it should work. UPDATE 3: When you import the .AZW file into Calibre (you can ignore the other files), most .AZW files will import as KFX; if it imports as KFX-ZIP, it failed.

I keep doing this but it doesnt show up on the tool bar. Edit: You also have to do this for the menu bar when device is connected.

@@JeanRodo is your tool bar collapsed? and you do not have to do it for when a device is connected. If it's on the main toolbar it will show up whether a device is connected or not.

YES, THANK YOU I was desperate to find a way to do this without a kindle serial number as I've never had one. I've always just downloaded the app to my phone or my pc, so using the normal method is impossible for me. Thank you so much! Amazing video bro! I believe when we purchase something, we should have full ownership and control over it. DRM restrictions take away the sense of true ownership, and it's frustrating to feel like were just renting content even after we've paid big money for it.

Solved files importing as KFX-ZIP . Now works for me on Windows 11. Solved files importing as KFX-ZIP by going into Calibre and running welcome wizard again and this time selecting 'Generic E-ink device' (or words to that effect) as on the initial Calibre install I selected ipad. Note I also had installed Update#2 of your amazing instructions and edited the main Calibre menu to include 'From KFX'. To convert I click From KFX and choose Convert to Epub. Thanks so much! Only one niggle and that is despite deleting the Kindle 'Storage' and Updates' folders and unchecking 'check for updates' , every time I shut down the pc the Kindle folder is deleted and I have to install the old version all over again.

I've done Update #2 and got From KFX button installed but for me it says 'Found KFX-ZIP format' and 'Selected book has DRM', so won't convert it either. I've got DeDRM installed too. Anyone have any ideas about how to fix this? @howtotechstuff

Worked perfectly on windows 11 -> Thank you buddy. Sub One thing to add -> if you restart kindle, It will update the version on windows. SO keep the original .exe file and remove update (add / remove programs) and re-install the right version given in the link above.

Now I wanted to convert some other kindle books I just bought because it has worked so well. But now I can’t get the download working in the kindle application. I now spent hours trying to block the update or something but it didn’t work (I am a Mac user). Unfortunately I don’t know much about these things and couldn’t understand what version was necessary, what and where to install or delete something… :/ I’m soo frustrated, agh

Thanks., I was able to remove Adobe DRM protection from the .epub file. I installed Calibre and these two plugins and .epub file was cleaned after opening it in Calibre. Thanks, now I can read my book on Kindle :)

Calibre is the best software for removing DRM. I use this software all the time without a problem. You can try it on library books too.

This worked on Windows 11 for me. For some books I had to use the From KFX option. Those books were all PDF books.

Nice video! Interesting find yesterday; I tried to deliver a new book (published in 2024) to my kindle for pc and I got an error message saying book could not be delivered until kindle for pc app was updated. I then had no choice but to deliver it to my kindle fire (which for whatever reason, the serial number input into Calibre won't work). I do keep my downloaded files on an SD card on the kindle rather than built in storage so once downloaded, I removed the SD and used a card reader to load and explore the file structure on the pc. I was able to find the book file and imported that into Calibre, converted it, then sent it to my new Kobo. It worked! Tedious but the only work around I could think of....

This sounds like a wonderfully clear and perfect explanation... but unfortunately, I just can't install the DeDRM plugin in Calibre. I've been trying for more than an hour, and it's getting exponentially frustrating. It just says "DeDRM_tools_10.0.3 (1).zip' is invalid. It does not contain a top-level __init__.py file". I had no issues with the KFX plugin. I've dowloaded two different versions and tried over and over, but my Calibre just doesn't respond. This is a great video and it's probably my fault, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. It's very disappointing.

Also, you need to unzip " DeDRM_tools_10.0.3.zip " and then load " DeDRM_plugin.zip " file.

@ I did it!! Hahaha, finallyyyy! I unzipped the DeDRM folder, copied the subfolder into a second, completely new folder, and loaded that same new folder with the DeDRM_plugin.zip " file. Today 2.11.2024 on WINDOWS 10 I was able to convert newly purchased book from Amazon using these steps. Be sure to use all the versions provided in the description or otherwise it won't work. I had to remove the previous deDRM plugin I had installed on my Calibre, because I was getting the file as KFX-ZIP, but once I downloaded the version provided in the description it worked.

The process worked for me. Just had to find a different path and I used the latest version of kindle. The books were placed as .kfx files in the directory. Once converted to pdf, where can I find the saved book? Update: The work around I found was that I double clicked in calibre it opens in preview, I export it now as a PDF. I am having one issue however, the front cover of the book is not included in one of my final PDFs. And the back cover is not included in the other PDF. Any suggestions? Thanks! Updated: I found the books in a path I specified for Calibre Library when I installed it. Great tutorial, thank you! One book did give some issues but when I took the tool bar shortcut "From KFX" to the main bar and used that to conver it, it worked well. 12/25/2025 Merry Christmas
