Thanks for watching! 🐶What are good areas in your community where you plan to take your pup?

I took my pup, now almost 1 back when he was 3 mknths old to a parking lot plaza area. Then we transitioned to putting him in the cart at Lowes and Home Depot for socialization. Then he went to puppy school and he was socialized!! ❤

Another fantastic video. Love the ideas. I’ve spoken to the vet we will be going to and they have suggested that I bring him in a couple of times to be weighed and just a general sniff around so he’s more comfortable before his first vaccination appointment

My older dog goes to doggy daycare once a week. When I foster dogs, I let them ride with me for drop off and pick up. The staff know to come out to say hello to the foster dog. Now that I have adopted a puppy, I have started the same thing. They get used to riding in the car and meeting new people.

Sounds great! Early and positive exposure to the sights and sounds and smells of the world is so important!

What about parvo exposure? They aren’t fully safe until the third round of shots, so how do I protect my puppy and socialize within the window?

Take a look at the video for some great ideas, including exposure sessions in the home, from the car and in parking lots where other dogs have been.

Great video!! I did have one slight thing I wanted to ask about. You said in the puppy class section to have puppies of similar size and temperament. That would likely to difficult to do, plus it doesn't help socialize puppies to dogs of different sizes. When I had Danes and Wolfhounds, I wanted to socialize them to every teeny-tiny dogs and learn that they are "okay". Years later when I am the one with the teeny-tiny dogs, I want my little ones meeting very large dogs as pups. Of course, one must be careful that the larger dog is gentle and will be appropriate with the puppy and not accidentally hurt the little ones. But I went out of my way to make sure my little ones were socialized to dogs much larger than they were so they knew they didn't have to fear those "giants". You don't let them meet every large dog, but ones that are gentle and tolerant of puppies are great to socialize small dogs to.

You are right, it's great to help a puppy get to know dogs of all sizes. That does require some vetting, however, to make sure the older dog knows how to play nicely with young and small puppies. In that case you'd just need to know the older dog's temperament to be sure it's a good fit.

I have no idea what to do with our adopted dog. She was a stray at the end of September, so we have no idea what her history is. She’s going to be a year old shortly. So I’m not sure if we should also take things slowly with her…? She’s part lab, so she acts much younger than her actual age. It’s also way too cold to walk in Alaska right now. She does seem to enjoy our local feed store. It’s a little less busy than petco, and calms down pretty quickly if she gets excited. She does do the jumping and fussing a lot when she sees people, and bites the leash after a while on our walks. She has done better since we’ve stopped our neighborhood walks due to the winter. The best walk we did was a sniff walk just around the corner, then a person made her nervous so we came home. She passed out for hours afterward.

Yes, you'll want to continue to take things slowly for her, and read her body language for when she's comfortable vs over her threshold for stress or excitement. It sounds like even a short sniffy walk is great for her. You can use Musher's Secret on her paws to protect from salt but otherwise you can still take her out on short walks.

Living in Japan is a little different. Luckily it's pretty much all about small dogs as is why we got a shih ztu. We got her out second day when we got her at 4 months old in a doggie pack pack in the crowded shopping streets. By the time we got her on a leash after her last shot she was good to go. Socializing here is no problem as the streets are crowded and beautiful parks. We pretty much nailed it. One time at the dog park with our old dog everything was fine until some clown brought his pittbull in then all hell broke out in 1 second. F-the dog parks.

As long as your outings are positive for her and she's totally relaxed with all the people and other dogs, that sounds great. Not all dogs can handle that level of activity at such a young age.

@@HowToTrainADreamDog .....Yup she just marches right down the street and looks. One dog barked at her but she'll get over it. I understand and thanks for getting back to me.

Can I do short walks on the sidewalk in my neighborhood if the puppy has had his first round of shots? I'd like to get him used to neighborhood sights and sounds within the socialization window, but he won't tolerate being carried or staying in a stroller because he just wants to get out and explore so badly. I've heard so many different opinions on this so I'm confused 🤔.
@HowToTrainADreamDog10 ай бұрын
We don't recommend neighborhood walks for young and unvaccinated puppies. Not only is the environment overstimulating, but the chances of running into another dog or picking up some poo from an unvaccinated dog are much higher. Exposure to the outside world needs to be done in very small doses in quiet environments until she's had more time to develop a positive association with all the new sights and sounds and smells.

What is you can bring them out until after they get their shots. The doctor is waiting for them to finish their medication. They are 11 weeks
@HowToTrainADreamDog7 ай бұрын
It's actually very important to expose your puppy (positively) to the outside world before vaccinations are complete. If you wait, you'll miss out on a critical developmental period where the puppy is forming lifelong opinions. We've got more information on how to do it safely in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2WyhWiNj7-Gj68

I am really having problems with this. My Pug came to live with me at about 10 weeks and she cannot go out in public until after her 4th shot, which is at 16 weeks. That means she cannot go on walks or anything at all where the ground might be contaminated. She is going crazy and so am I. What else can I do? I have been carrying her around the block but that doesn't give her any exercise and she is overstimulated all the time. I am going crazy and so is she.

Actually I just decided this would be a good opportunity to get Daisy used to her car seat. I can take her to the parking lots of the places I will eventually take her and she can look and smell out the window. This gives me hope. thank you Michele.

We feel that there are ways to get her outside, including exercised, even before vaccinations are complete. It's very important to do this before her imprint period ends around 16 weeks old. There are ways to do it safely while still meeting the needs of your puppy. This video can help you! kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2WyhWiNj7-Gj68
