This 30 minute video is a guide on how to socialize your puppy in a safe an easy way. The video begins with an introduction to explain the method. Then I break socialization up into easy to follow steps using lots of footage of socializing my puppy Halo as an example.
The way this video approaches puppy socialization is setting up the environment for success to reinforce the social behaviors you want while creating a positive emotional response. Approaching puppy socialization as if training a behavior. Breaking the training up into steps. The puppy’s prior history and genetics will determine how fast you move through the steps.

Thank you so much for this incredibly valuable information!! I simply can't stress it enough! The internet is filled with terrible, amateurish, downright dangerous, wrong information, so that it's difficult to stay on top of things and you don't know who is trustworthy anymore. It is my dream to have a puppy one day, and the fact that your videos will always be there is extremely reassuring. You should be the N°1 trainer on KZbin, but people fall for smiley attitudes, great editing and sensationalistic clickbait-thumbnails... I honestly believe that your content could mean the difference between a happy dog living a fulfilled life and and a dog being surrendered into a shelter for behaviour problems after "training" with aversive methods failed.

Its an interesting thing. I go on youtube when I need to learn something, how to use my editing software, my camera, Ive even fixed my ride on lawn mower and dishwasher.... but when it comes to dog training... I feel sorry for people looking for info here. I took a long break from youtube. It was too much for me at that point in my life. My channel actually was one of the top channels but I started getting the hate mail and stalkers associated iwth that. So I just went into the professional world of dog training and conferences. After many years of traveling the world and one year doing 2 counties a month... I went back and saw youtube... and saw I was burning out from traveling and preaching to the crowd... When I could just be home with my dogs and teach the lessons I have learned to more people than at conferences where everyone is on the same page. So Ill keep at it. Im not here to entertain anyone... I am just here as an education channel.

After 12 years of trying to manage my dog's aggression and reactivity, and blaming myself for getting everything so wrong when she was a puppy, I can't tell you how relieved I am to hear you say that there is a degree of genetics and personality at play! I certainly did get things wrong even with the best intentions, but many other puppies would have taken stupid human errors in their stride and turned out just fine - but my prey driven, adrenalin-junkie, ferocious working Patterdale Terrier wasn't quite so forgiving and lived her life being furious at everything. I lost her in November 2019 and I still miss her being her impossible cranky self every day, but tomorrow I collect our brand new Border Terrier puppy - I hope I don't mess it up this time and that he gives me an easier ride! Thank you for your great videos, if you come to the UK please train me. 😊

This is all very good advice...recently I was out with my puppy and It went extremely well. When we went out she was not feeling it and when we got back home she was super stoked ( awesome experience). I had a HUGE gut feeling we should stop, pack it up and go back home....we were out about 30 mins to an hour. She was super happy and so was I but I followed my gut I went home and she had a wonderful day. I always follow my gut...I agree..,I think it should never be too long when building a good experience...it should be short and sweet. I feel like each puppy is an individual but my gut tells me when my puppy might get over tired and a mentally over tired puppy can become overwhelmed suddenly. I wish everyone would watch your video. I have a firm approach but I entirely agree with all of your points. Its good solid advice.

And this stranger came righ tup and patted him on the head! What a fantastic video! I love everything about it. When I brought my youngest rescue into our house I had a female dog who was chill and a male who would try to fight any new dog he could reach. I was extremely cautious with my old little reactive guy, and started them out on separate floors but in earshot. I used a treat robot (he was already trained to the robot) to reward him when the new dog made noise. I took things very slowly with removing space, visual barriers, using a muzzle, and within 3 days they were making friends. A few years later they are bffs and play constantly. Unfortunately I wasn't as cautious with my chill girl and when the new pup got his (puberty and health problem related) onset of anxiety, they started having problems getting along. So now I really have to be careful with them and always encourage them to be tolerant of each other, and never let them have food near each other when I am not right there. If I had taken more time for my chill girl and encouraged a more positive relationship between her and the new dog at the beginning (like I had for my reactive dog) we might have avoided some of the more scary things like his tooth narrowly missing her eye when she got too close to his nose ointment (he considered that his food). Alas. Luckily as we get better at encouraging tolerance and preventing guarding situations, they are getting more and more comfortable around each other and the last disagreement was vocal only which is SUCH an improvement!!! Also, I had a similar experience to you when getting my SCUBA cert to get started in aquarium work. Pool was great, then suddenly we were in WA in frigid saltwater, all the extra wetsuit thickness and the hood and super low vis, and I couldn't descend. My instructor was awesome and encouraged me to do some snorkeling that first day. After the snorkeling I was fine, so we made up the 2 dives I missed the first day once we got back. If you ever want to try again on your SCUBA cert, the open water classes pay super poorly so instructors who are making a living off of those try to pump as many people through as quickly as possible. If you pay for private (or small group) instruction it is way less pressure. Getting your cert in cold water is better preparation for all kinds of diving, but tropical diving is so much more pleasant. I would never dive cold for fun now. We spent 8 years on Guam and the diving is amazing, although if you go to the less developed islands in the chain it's even better. But I am glad we have you in dogs now. I feel like dog training really needs you, while positive and humane training is much more standard/expected in exotics and aquatics. Although it's amazing how behavioral training and enrichment has spread through the taxa in zoos and aquaria between when I began in the field through my injury and transition to dogs up till today. Thanks again for the great video on a very important subject!!

Yeah, I didnt go into detail, but it was many triggers, it was Feb here in san diego so freezing for me in the ocean, and I felt like the wet suit was strangling my neck.. besides the visibility and depth. Oh and the male instructor was doing gross things like trying to put a crab from the bottom of the ocean on me... Anyway sometimes dogs just dont get alone as easily as others. It could have been that. Dont beat yourself up.

@@kikopup I used to dive our Japanese Spider Crab exhibit and it would freak out my coworkers because inevitably a curious gigantic crab would climb on my back and ride around like the weirdest backpack...they have these couple-feet-long legs but they are super slow and dopey critters. And I knew they were there and harmless going in, they just look weird😂 But people who harass wild animals in the ocean for amusement make me feel stabby. At 17:50 min in the video, we at last see your puppy being 'normally' excited and distracted and trying to run away from you to meet his environment. THANK YOU FOR THAT. He's always calm so it's hard for us to believe you had to go through what we go through. I would suggest much more videos where we SEE you struggle with let's say an excited dog, and slowly solve the behavior. As you say, some dogs are a lot calmer by nature, history, genetic, past experience etc We are under the impression that your dog was almost born calm and perfect

To be honest, when you show a dog behaving badly the dog is rehearsing the behavior you dont like making it more likely to happen in the future and harder to train out. The part you linked, I knew in 1 second that wish was beginning to herd the cars and normaly I would have left instead of creating a teaching moment. I rarely do that. And doing that with wish made it probably so I had to spend an extra week training her to not herd cars. If I had let it go on longer for the audience to see, it could have been a problem for months. By quickly interrupting undesirable behaviors redirecting and reinforcing appropriate behaviors is why my dogs look so calm. I show them what to do in small easy steps rather than let them fail and get stressed just to prove they are a normal dog.

Yes :) It can. Keep going :) And its not the worst problem to have. Every dog has an issue. Sure there are some easy dogs... and of course people will boast it is their training. Halo my latest puppy is an easy dog, he really is. He makes me look good and I really didnt have to work on any behavior issues. Its really not me, its him. But my dogs with issues, damn they took more work. But in general, most puppies make you feel overwhelmed at some point and wonder if you were in your right mind getting them to begin with. Do you happen to have any recommendations for dog/animal psychology lessons? On a professional level, to earn degrees in psychology. Are there any sources you specifically recommend as being very good quality useful sources for courses? Or do you have other recommendations on how to begin working towards this profession? What to go to school for, that gears towards this in the long run. Thank you.

It’s a great video! Thank you! Could you explain more about this “If your puppy is reserved around guests don’t have the guests feed the treats as it can cause a puppy feel conflicted.” The conflict you mean here is about?
@kikopup
@kikopup 4 жыл бұрын
Well, the dog doesnt want to get too close to the person, but wants the treat, so goes too close for comfort to get the treat. Its like if there was some creepy dude in an alley trying to feed you a strawberry... what can happen if its too creepy for the dog, is that they start to not want to take food from strangers. So better to see if the puppy chooses to go to someone then you can feed the puppy for coming back. Another thing the guest could do, is put a treat down and walk away from it, so the puppy associates the guest with treats but doesnt have to be too close in order to eat it. Obviously if you have a happy go lucky dog or puppy the guests can give treats.

I cannot completely explain it but it is clear watching your videos that you are well educated in learning theories and you are not simply coming up with this stuff on the fly because you trained 20 dogs like this and it works. Thanks in advance for your time. Great job on the videos. I will do my best to promote this channel.

Well, I didn't go to study animal behavior at a university. But I was lucky enough to begin my career mentoring to educated trainers. The shelter I began my career at had an amazing director who was influenced by the work of Ted Turner. It was like falling with my bum in the butter. I apprenticed for 5 years and had access to 60-100 dogs a day at the shelter with all sorts of behavior problems. So yes I worked with thousands of dogs, but I didnt make any money the first 5 years. I attended seminars and conferences and read books and got DVDs... but honestly, If I had not fell with my bum in the butter, Id not know where to find these books or where to find the animal trainers and educators I admire. I early in my career was lucky enough to get invited to conferences. SO I was able to make connections with all the trainers I admire and look up to. Now I have great access to information because I am friends or colleges with all those people and I can just email them or chat to them if I need. Speaking at the art and science of animal training conference its a mix of animal trainers and Applied Behavior Analysts and I was so lucky to become a part of it for the last four years. I would have to say that conference and getting to learn from the other presenters during and after the conference has been the most amazing learning experience of my career besides the jump start at the beginning of my career. I do get worried when people jump into a career because they did some quick certification. I get it, you dont know what you dont know. And I know I was really really lucky. And the mentor I had, she trained me for free. And because of that, I feel that it is important for me to also share the information I know for free. Its important stuff. I know it is.

Great video. What kind of harness are you using on Halo and would you recommend it?
@kikopup
@kikopup 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt recommend it :) I got it before I went to pick him up at a store. It was the only one with small buckles. All dogs are different so I don't recommend 1 harness for all dogs... The most important thing is that the harness doesnt rest on the throat (where the dog makes gagging or rasping noises) , that it doesnt impede the leg or shoulder movement and doesnt rest in the armpits or rub anywhere. I also dont like when the buckles are big, and especially when there is one under the dogs chest so when they lay they lay on the buckle.

This is great, thanks! As a dog trainer do you think the tendency idea of group classes for puppies needs/should be changed to encourage individualized lessons instead? I know when I first started with horse back riding lessons I did what other people do and joined a cheaper group class rather then paying more money for individualized lessons. I regret that now as it turned out to be a bad experience and waste of money. I read a book that suggested that beginning riders should take private lessons to gain confidence and get correct training in the basics first before moving into the more stressful environment of a group class. Made total sense! So after watching this video I'm wondering if the same logic shouldn't be applied to puppy owners and even the new owners of adult dogs. That it would be better to encourage people to start out with individual lessons in the dog's own home first before moving to group classes. Obviously not everyone can/will go for that but it might be worth suggesting?
@crosita1
@crosita1 4 жыл бұрын
Not Emily but I definitely think you have a point. Personally I only teach private lessons for dog training, but for Zentangle once I start I will likely also offer group classes because feedback is less important there. I think group classes have benefit, but individual feedback is as good as it gets. As a learner, I did dangerous yoga until I got individual home yoga therapy, luckily before I injured myself. And I took Class Voice in University and again, I learned a little but nothing near what I learned from private lessons. I suspect it's something to do with the physicality of these skills that make them so much harder in a group setting. Most people learn languages in classes too, but I had the opportunity to learn Irish in private lessons and even that felt more effective. I was pretty happy with the breaks in dance classes to catch my breath though haha You can also get benefit from recording yourself doing any of the above things and being your own critic/teacher, and that's free. Maybe not as good as even group classes with a decent instructor but it does have some value! With animals, there's so much going on at once, changes happen fast, and timing precision makes such a difference, and I care a lot about owners understanding their dog's body language. So doing it in a class doesn't seem like I would be delivering enough value to be worth my time. But a more skilled instructor might find it easier. And I like adult dogs, so it might be simpler with a bunch of puppies with short attention spans who need breaks. Would love to hear what Emily thinks.

Well, for puppy classes I suggest people trust their gut and leave the class if their puppy is overwhelmed and be ok saying no to the instructor. Even me, I was unable to say no in a puppy class... because I didnt want the teacher to feel bad. so instead my puppy had a bad experience and only i knew about it and it only affected me and my puppy... So I say, your the one who is going to go home with the dog so do what you need to do and stand up for your dog. I didnt take Halo to puppy classes because I didnt want to be kind of pushed into things i am uncomfortable with.

@@kikopup It's really nice to hear you say this. I have this problem too--for some reason I just have so much trouble standing up for my dog if an authority is there. Even if I know better, sometimes I do what they tell me to. That hasn't worked well for me 😂. I try to make sure my own clients know how important it is to stop if something feels uncomfortable or dangerous, and there's almost always more than one way to approach a behavior change.

You're absolutely the best! I've only had my 7 month old puppy for a few days, he's a big boy 16kg samoyed, super friendly to people, goes up to them, happily receives strokes & greetings. He also greets other dogs when we go for walks from a distance. Today I introduced him to my best friend's puppy (who I know) at times he was okay, then he growled, eventually settled but out of nowhere snapped/ bit at the other puppy. I'm concerned about this behavior. I'm assuming I should hold back on interacting with other dogs til we see a professional trainer, is that fair? anything I can do in the meantime?
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica, if He just snapped or put his mouth on the puppy but didnt damage or cause the puppy to yelp or look hurt, its a pretty normal thing for an adolescent dog to do. However as you can imagine its not always a great idea for the puppy say for example the puppy has never met new big dogs before and is a little shy getting corrected isnt the best first experience to build confidence around dogs. I suggest you play things safe to keep it a positive experience for both. You can do the settle on the mat game where your dog and the puppy are learning to settle on their mats on leash at a distance from each other, you can also go on walks together on leash where they are just learning to be calm around each other and you can give them treats for looking over at each other without pulling or getting excited.

Would love your help! My 3mo old puppy is comfortable walking up and down our street, but as soon as we need to cross the street or turn a corner, he needs a lot of encouragement to move even a few steps. What should we do? We’ve tried treats and acting fun, but with mixed results. We want to socialize him as much as we can, but at the same time, he doesn’t want to engage in these situations (either sits or stands in place - not out of fear, just seems like he doesn’t want to go). It’s not always possible to control his environment since we live close to a busy street where the can be sudden loud cars, so we’re finding it challenging to encourage him.

I think I can see a lot of things that went wrong with my dog's socialisation as a puppy :( He mostly met other dogs just by "seeing what will happen". He is now very reactive towards many dogs, especially small white dogs (anything that looks remotely like a maltese) and bulldogs/pugs. While I have no idea how he got his aversion to small white dogs, something really strange happened with bulldogs. There was a male bulldog in his puppy class and they were good friends, playing together all the time. As soon as they both hit puberty, they hated each other (similarly to Wish's "brain resetting" when she went into heat). This hasn't happened with other dogs. My dog Mali loves my sister's female bulldog, who he has known since she was a puppy, but reacts aggressively towards other bulldogs. One time he lunged and barked at her when she was coming towards us, but completely switched around to wagging his tail and being friendly as soon as he recognised her.

Hi Emily, We are finding our cardigan corgi 6 month old to be EXTREMELY aroused by other dogs. She is not afraid, but is very eager to play with other dogs and gets so excited that she barks and “looks aggressive” but just wants to play. She recalls ok in these situations, but it is hard to practice being new to our neighborhood. I am realizing how few people I know that have well trained dogs here where we live, so what would you suggest about socializing with other dogs when the only dogs you know are not trained well at all? Your videos have been so helpful in getting Lucy trained, but this has been really disheartening to try and train, but have so few opportunities to practice.

In this circumstance I suggest really working on settle on a mat, then go places where dogs walk by, like a cement path you can be further away. Having your dog in one of those black mess crates will prevent the other dog staring and being ridiculous to your dog, and from a distance at first you can reinforce your dog for calmly watching. When your dog gets better you can work on settle on the mat while the untrained dogs walk by first at a distance and then from closer up where your dog can ignore them completely. Sometimes going to a vet parking lot can be helpful you can be at a distance and the dogs will go into the vet and you can mark and feed for watching you can even do this from your car and if oyur dog gets too excited you can close the door or cover the crate and put music on in the car.

I have my own mentors I idolize but there are things that they do sometimes that I dont agree with and that is OK. I think its not healthy to follow any teachings blindly. Its good to formulate your own opinions and agree and disagree with others. I love talking to the speakers at the Art and Science of Animal Training Conference that I am going to this month. Sometimes its like being vegan, and people share your vegan recipe, and then they are confused why you dont want to share their recipe that has meat in it... If that makes sense. I try my best to train people as compassionately as I do dogs... as people respond in the same way as dogs when told what not to do -with frustration and sometimes aggression and that is simply not the most effective way to change behavior.

What are your thoughts on puppy socialization classes where puppies play off leash?
@kikopup
@kikopup 4 жыл бұрын
Well I didnt go into that in this video. But my answer is.... It depends. It depends if you are able to say "no" and stand up for your puppy and be ok walking out of the class if its too much for your puppy. I suggest training the new behaviors at home and at class only focusing on calm settles and appropriate play... but sometimes puppy classes are really chaotic... and not in the best interest of every puppy... I feel like owners get pushed into doing things they know they shouldnt but they are too embarrassed to say no to the "professional" in a class environment...

More info, I got a new dog in December and things were going well with the previous 3 dogs till about a month in, we brought in a dog to dog sit and my new dog barks at it constantly but sometimes would lay down next to it. I brought in a trainer who suggested a dominate down and it worked, but then she started occasionally guarding me from the previous dogs and dominating her has now started multiple fights as one of the other dogs taunts her. I've stopped dominating but she will growl when my other dogs approach when I'm on the couch or at my desk in my in home office. I think all the dogs need training and it's overwhelming for me to know where to start. The dogs we sit are back and she's very reactive to them, even after they got along towards the end of last time. Even if you aren't close but think a Skype or Google hangout would work I'll take anything. I'm so upset. I love my 2 dogs (including the new one) and my roommates 2 dogs as well, but my new dog seems to be set up for failure. Cause all the issues we hadn't taken care of have been brought to light, and now new ones as well.
