Low Cutting Rotary Mower

A low cutting rotary mower is hard to find because most cool season lawns are cut tall. However many warm season lawns need to be cut very low so finding a low cutting mower that will cut 3/4 inch is often needed.

I have the exact mower! Just a little older, but it looks practically the same! Love it to pieces, starts with one pull every time even after years of wear and tear!

I just bought one after moving to a house with a 10,000 sq ft lawn...the drive on this thing is awesome and it cuts 3/4" to 4" I believe. LOVE IT!

Welcome to the HRX owners group, Doc. I love mine. I have a striper kit rolling behind mine. If you ever want to cut between settings, let me know and I'll tell you what I do.

Bought my HRX August 2009. It starts on first pull. Use twice a week from spring, summer & fall. Just replace air filter, oil , spark plug(once). Had to replace one rear wheel this past October. Best mower I’ve owned. Still looks new!

I bought the same mower and love it. I would advise careful actuation of the bag/mulch selector handle. I broke mine as it is only cheap plastic. The engine and deck does really well. My lawn is 80/20 centipede and Bermuda.

Best mower! Have had mine for 10+ years. One pull start everytime. Change oil annually, fill with fuel and this things cuts great!! Need to lower the front wheels 1/2 less than the back wheels for True level cut.

Doc, I know its probably not possible right now but what I think would be good for your channel is traveling to different regions of the US and talking about the grass in that region. I know Bermuda lawn care might be different in Arizona than in Georgia, I'm actually in Arizona

I have the same mower for my Bermuda lawn in Chattanooga and it’s been great. We don’t have anything near level lawns here and the soil is about 50% rocks so it would be insane to have a reel mower here. Mine has levers for the throttle and travel speed that I think is far superior to the new setup they use now. I use mine with last years blades for my spring scalp also and it does fine. When you use the mulch mode as I do most of the time the chute gets filled up with clippings and dirt so I open the rear flap and blow it out with the blower when I’m done so it doesn’t make a mess inside. I went to an all Honda program several years ago. If it burns gas it has to be a Honda or I don’t want it. I’m a former mechanic and I have a low tolerance for crappy engines, I was even disappointed with the Stihl trimmer and blower I bought 10 years ago. The trimmer got replaced with a Milwaukee 18V model and I’m happy. Ethanol free gas, Stabil, and Mobil 1 oil in Honda motors makes for a stress free landscape experience.

Before I bought my reel mower I was looking at the Masport Rotarolla….cuts like a rotary mower but it can cut low and has a rear drum that drives the mower. Which makes some killer stripes

Note: On the [ Bag Mulch ] Selector that there are INTERMEDIATE Ratios of Mulch [ Left to Right ] before sending to the Bag. This works great for - reducing Tall Grass Clippings and Leaves before bagging - or leaving Some in the Lawn and Some in the Bag

You probably know this by now but on the HRX models the 1.5 setting = 1.25" cut and the 1 setting = 0.75", all other settings are equivalent. Been enjoying the same mower for 4 years on my bermuda. Though I did purchase a very old TruCut this summer to play with after seeing your reel mowing videos.

Cannot go wrong with the Honda ,mine is 2 years old and the model up from yours with 6 speeds,blade stop and starts and runs simply by pulling 1 x.Here in Canada just under $1000 believe it or not,my Toro's (2)are SR and a couple hundred under the cost of the Honda

While I do need a mower that goes down to at least 3/4" I bought the $250 Craftsman mower that only goes down to 1.25" when I moved in this past summer, not knowing about scalping bermudagrass. I've been racking my brain and tinkering with it to get it to cut low enough to scalp in the spring, but the only option that I came up with that is the least expensive is to buy a cheap reel mower that goes down to 1/2", and cut from 1.25" down to 1/2" in 1/4" increments picking up the clippings with the bagger in between cuts. Either that or I pay a landscaper to scalp the lawn in the spring, and keep it between 1.25" and 1.75" with my Craftsman, that way, I don't have to buy another piece of equipment that I don't even have a place to store because I don't have a shed, just some space in a two-car garage, that I have to share with a golf cart, six bicycles, and a bunch of other junk.

I have the same omower and same size yar, I been having a problem with setting the height, when my son was mowing the lawn I realized the my mower look like it was doing a wheelie, way low in the back and super high in the front

After watching lots of videos i have convinced myself to put in a putting green ,,i ahve a high sandy property and have a good spot picked out,,,question for you is what are my cheapest options for a mower,,,will a rotary mower do it or is it best to try and find a actuall gas powered greens mower,,some used ones out there and im a good mechanic,,any ideas will be appreciated..

As much as I like my two year old HRX mower, the amount of dry grass and leaves that emit between the bag and discharge guard make me feel like I'm "Pigpen" from Peanuts.

I don’t like these variable walking speed control mowers. That’s over-kill and ridiculous. It just unnessarily adds expense to the mower, IMO. Just put five or six separate speeds on it and walk that speed. That’s “variable” enough.

Somewhat true ... but just like our reel mowers it's nice to have it when going around curved beds etc.
