The detatching and verticutting videos have been very illuminating and well worth the time. I have dethatched in the past and really liked getting rid of all the old dead brown stuff that came up. However, I see your point about disturbing the roots and rhizomes, so I will not be dethatching again. Instead, I'll rely on scalping to get rid of the dead brown undergrowth. Same thing for how you apply growth regulator. I have a spray and it takes waaaay longer to apply it. I'll go granular next time. Really appreciate these 'think it through' videos!!!

Hey from Australia Doc, This is just in regards to fraze/fraise?? cutting. I’m a greenkeeper with 40yrs experience on lawn bowls greens. We ‘shave’ our greens almost every year for the same reason you mention (to remove ALL mat which slows down the bowl. I personally have been doing it all that time & it’s been done long before me as well. There are a few different speciality machine for this from pedestrian (Winston Suttle) to tractor mounted shavers but all do the same thing - skim the grass surface like removing the crust off custard. Now I run my own ‘residential greenkeeping’ company, I do the very same thing with all of my clients lawns each year. I use my Ryan turf cutter set just right to the soil surface only, to remove only the previous years growth completely, the result is that beautiful lush new growth the exact same as your own beautiful home lawn. The same can also be achieved by scarifying heavily then scalping to soil level with a utility rotary mower to remove all remnants. This is our other method. I run my clients lawns at 10-12mm in height as I find this gives me the ‘strip-ability’ that the clients all want. I do have a couple that like it around 5-6mm as well. Anyway keep up the great content Cheers 👍🏻🍻🏝🇦🇺😎

Good to hear from you... so true. A strong scalp is so key to good Bermuda and most don't do it in the spring here. They only cut a small amount off. Next spring we will be doing a verticut right before the scalp.

I understand the importance of not letting thatch build up too much, and you do a great job explaining how to avoid that. However, what if you have inherited a lawn that already has a significant thatch build up? It looks like my neighbor’s lawn has patches where weeds were so thick that when they were killed, it left thatch patches where the bermuda won’t grow. Is there a point where dethatching, as bad as it is, is worth it so you can push your lawn back to health over the course of the growing season? Thinking more about doing this next spring.

So i have a new house our sod was put in around October last year so we had problems with the sod taking because it basically was during dormant months so we have bare spots in spots. I also made the mistake of buying the box store seed. I have spots were the grass grows lush and green but I haven’t been cutting it short probably around 2in. Well I decide to cut it lower to help spread the grass better should I just bite the bullet and cut as low as my mower can cut?

Hey Doc, from Australia! Just wanting to know your view on groomer blades/ reels on couch/ Bermuda? They are really big on the domestic market here in Australia at the moment but are usually used on golf / bowling greens, not as deep as the verti- cutter but instead cutting into the crown of the plant ie. making it spread sideways and thicken up. Regards Love the vids keep them coming!

Yes it’s the same type of machine where only the depth of cut varies. Grooming (light), Verticut (medium) & Scarify (heavy).

Should Zoysia be dethatched? Since Zoysia is a runner with stolons as well, would it be better to use a verticutter? I've used the spring-tine dethatcher in my zoysia a couple of times, mainly in an effort to help remove some brown patch areas that I've been battling for 3-4 years, and the results have been fair at best. The spring tines really tear up healthy grass IMO. I've had damage in small areas from the spring tines but Palisades recovers pretty fast so the damage hasn't been that big of a problem. I think I'm going to take your advice and not use the spring tine for sure and cut N/1k/year to a little less than 2. I've been using Prophecy and Headway and the large patch is better but not cured by any means. Any advice would be helpful.

Try pumping in dirtbooster and the GOOD fungus spray.. buy extra fungus packs and spray every week for 4 weeks. The goal is to have the good take over the bad. Only verticut if you REALLY need it.

Is scarifying and verticutting the same thing? The Sun Joe I have has both a detaching blade and a scarifying blade. Looks very much like a verticut.
@HowTowithDoc3 жыл бұрын
I think the sunjoe has straight blades, not offset. So kind of. A true verticutter has blades that are totally straight so they DON'T tear up the turf.

Doc, I just purchased a used reel mower and practically scalped my Bermuda lawn. It's now pretty ugly (brown) which seems to suggest the grass was too long. If I apply PGF Complete now will it burn the lawn?
@HowTowithDoc3 жыл бұрын
No, apply and water in asap. Do a light coat now and again in 3 weeks. Did a video on summer scalp a while back. Look for it.

I think you’re missing the biggest benefit to the practice of verticutting. You’re cutting those runners/stolons to establish into a new individual plant. Yes you can achieve this in a way by aeration but not the same as verticutting where you’re almost making your own sprigs. Verticutting should be apart of cultural practices in healthy bermuda lawn but that’s just me and since you used the term “average homeowner” I know you’re not talking to me.
@HowTowithDoc3 жыл бұрын
True... but most consumer scarifiers DON'T do what a true verticutter does. I thin cut line without disturbing the tuff much at all.
@jamieadams46153 жыл бұрын
@@HowTowithDoc yes and that is the struggle I’m facing now. Finding a true verticutting machine with actual blades. Very tough to find unless you pay the big $$$
@HowTowithDoc3 жыл бұрын
Rent a BillyGoat seeder. Just use it for the cutting blades.
@jamieadams46153 жыл бұрын
@@HowTowithDoc yes I did do that last year. Something to be said for having actual blades that are sharp and meant to cut. Those “blades” on drop seeder are thick and don’t really cut as much like you want. They are also spaced pretty far apart. That one image in your video of a true verticutter would be dream if I could find one cheap or somewhere to rent. I thought about investing in Swardsman bc it has verticut cartridge but then you go and see what thelawnforum guys are saying and they don’t like the swardsmans…… idk will figure something out when I have more time to research.

Gotta disagree with you on this one.... Difference of opinions. In my opinion verticutting will help open ground/soil for better penetration of nutrients/micros/macros.
@HowTowithDoc3 жыл бұрын
In the video I talk about the BENEFITS of verticutting and one being the improved infiltration rate of water. However, most people are trying to THICKEN up the lawn and that's not a time to be verticutting. I'd rather see them aerate.
