Hey Doc, I had to start over on my lawn this season after 10 years of no irrigation or fertilizer, Just mowing. I'm not sure what type of Bermuda was here when I bought the property 20 years ago. I choose Scott's common Bermuda and followed all of your recommendations and now have a beautiful lawn. So I am here to say that common Bermuda is not the red headed step child. So if anyone is starting from scratch common is not bad, as opposed to what you call really good seed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say. I also use the SunJoe scarifier, since I have a rotary mower. I was wondering why you don't use a scarifier cylinder on your reel mower? Or do only certain reel mowers have the option for dethatch and scarifier cylinders?

I have patches of Zoysia from seed in my front yard that I've been unable to positively identify until you mentioned that there is a difference between sod and seed with Zoysia because I suspected it was St. Augustine, but that should have died when I treated the undesirable grasses with Q4 herbicide. I did an experiment with taking plugs from the front and planting them in shady areas in the back yard and the plugs are pretty happy there, so that might be a September project.

I’ve been watching all of your videos and learning a lot. It seems that you always speak from the perspective of having started with Bermuda. I have a lawn that basically looks like a mix of grass and weeds you’d find on a hillside. How would you tackle a lawn with multiple grasses, if we wanted to change to a really nice Bermuda turf? I don’t mind it being a multi year project. Thanks!!

You can do this one of two ways. You can do a full lawn renovation, which would require you kill the whole area and bring it down to bare dirt before planting. Or you can start treating it like its a bermuda lawn. Meaning, mow often, mow low and push the living daylights out of the growth during the growth season. I wouldn't do this option this late in the year, but you can start mowing often and mowing low. DO NOT SKIP PREEMERGENT. If you skip your preemergents, you will have a massive fight on your hands with the crabgrass and poa annua.

Been following you for just a little bit, but have learned a lot. I recently did a backyard reno with GCI's Bermuda (Rivera, Blackjack, Maya) and have it looking good - did this because I have two German Shepherds that like to explore and dig. I have a side yard that leads in to the backyard that I have to drive over occasionally and its in GCI TTTF which every time I drive over, it takes a beating. My plan is to smoke it off and seed the GCI Bermuda this coming spring. Now my question. I have GCI TTTF in my front yard, and I can already tell that the intense dark green TTTF isn't going to match very well with the "darkish" green from the Bermuda. I have two Maple trees in my front yard and a neighbors Pin Oak from giving me full sun on my front to do a Bermuda reno. Would Zenith Zoysia semi match color of the Bermuda in the side yard once its established, and would the Zenith be able to withstand a fair amount of shade? Not completely black out shade, but given said trees. Looking to keep the Bermuda at 1" and the Zoysia at 1.5-.75 if you think it will thrive. Honestly don't want to go through the hassle and the extreme upfront expense of Zoysia sod like Toro/Zeon/Geo that is known for the shade tolerance. Thanks.

I ordered some seed from the site you put out in your last video. They didn't have the same seed you used so I ordered BlackJack. I hope it is good. I just want to hit a few dead spots in the back.They are out of Yukon.

Hey Doc! Question, what if I want to seed Perennial Rye so that it can over take and replace my old thin grass in my front yard. My front yard has never been loved and I started this year but it is awful and my back yard sod that was put down this year doesn’t handle wear well and I want to replace it. I am in Washington so a cool season area

Doc, I haven't been able to find a good answer to this question so I'm hoping you can help guide me in the right direction. If I put down a bag of Yukon over my existing grass to fill in some thin areas, should I still be mowing? If I don't mow for a couple of weeks while the new seed germinates the existing grass will get too long but I'm worried that it will impede germination if I do mow. Any advice on this?

I checked out the link for the Yukon seed and the picture with the golfball doesn't look like a hybrid, it looks more like a common Bermuda. I'm pretty sure my Bermudagrass lawn is Princess 77, or something close because it has such a fine blade and texture.

Should remind warm season grass folks that now is about the last week to seed warm season grasses because cool weather will stop them in September if you get it, and the seedlings won’t have enough time to build and store for winter.

@HowTowithDoc

You can literally see that the bag is 99% pure bermuda seed. (it's a small bag) More than likely people are planting and don't understand that weed seeds are present in their lawn already or are brought in when they work the ground.

Hey Doc, I have a section of Bermuda lawn that was neglected for many years. After a year and a half of using your lawn guides, pre-emergent, and selective post emergent treatments, there was barely any Bermuda left as there was so many weeds and bugs. I've gotten out nearly all the weeds and have been pushing the Bermuda to spread, but it's slow and it left many bare areas. I don't want to reseed if I don't have to. But now the entire lawn is infested with chamberbitter. I'm mowing 2-3 times a week and bagging the clippings. how do I take this weed out without damaging the burmuda?
