Hey Doc, what I like to do when I’m cutting my lawns after topdressing, I always give them a little watering cycle first. This way the sand stays quite firm & you don’t pick up a grain with the cylinder mower. It’s worked for me for 40 yrs so just putting it out there. Cheers 👍🏻🇦🇺

starting this with a new home, they laid the lawn down as fast as they could and it's so dang bumpy, then put 2 years of settling and i've got some spots over 6 inches. Thanks to you and so many others on here with great info I feel like in ...maybe 4-5 more summers it's gonna look great. A reel mower was a must to get started and i totally agree, after taking it down about as low as i could go with a cheap push one (about 7/8") it had already made the dormant yard look great. It made everything much easier, and after the initial couple of cuts, which were a lot of work, it's just a nice walk around the yard to maintain.

Two questions- why are you pushing the leveling rake vs pulling it behind you? What’s the difference? Great point about going on the diagonal. 2nd- how much would you water if no rain was expected for a week or more? Thanks for another really great video!!

I have noticed that my yard (SATX) is about 1 month behind your suggestions because my house is pretty close to my neighbors and his 2 story home casts a shadow over my front yard thus delaying my yard growth. its not bad because it makes it cooler during the drought/hot summers and its less watering I have to do... my yard just looks patchy longer since it takes longer to wake up.

Hi doc, great video but i have a question. how long does it take for the sand (or mix) to get incorporated into the ground, Aafter how long you can play on the grass without disturbing the sand. How long before you can walk barefoot without having your feet full of sand or potting soil?

Unless I missed it earlier in the video, you didn’t mention you were leveling Bermuda grass. Is this the same process for fescue. Also, if you do this every 2-3 years, does it create a problem with having too much sand and compaction or does the sand dissipate and mix into the soil. Im asking this question for fescue specifically and I know Bermuda does well in sand. I’m in Monroe NC (Union County) with this tan clay crap soil. Have already covered front and back with 3-4” of topsoil which I didn’t know at the time brought in all sorts of weed seeds. Neighbor said I need to nuke the whole thing in the fall and start over.

Hey Doc awesome video as always. I just love looking at your lawn and it being worked on his mesmerizing. I think you already know the answer but it would be cool if you have a minute to respond. I have a common Bermuda lawn I am in California been watching your videos for around two years now and my lawn is the best looking lawn in my neighborhood. For over a year though now it’s really starting to bother me that I have high spots in my lawn. Is there any real trick to fix that? I feel like the only thing I can do is shovel it flat and then maybe take some of the old good grass that I’ve shoveled out and try to plug it in to the newly level dirt. I know in one of your videos you showed that you can take the runners and plant them in their areas and I’ve done that with a lot of success. But the lazy side of me kind of wants to just rototill the entire lawn and then make it exactly flat. I figure it might take two seasons to get the lawn pretty much back to full thickness. Any thoughts?
@HowTowithDoc3 жыл бұрын
Correct some type of grading would have to be done. It might be worth having it professional done then do a reseed. Otherwise your method will work.

When should leveling be done? I have a new bermuda sod lawn that was just laid 3-4 weeks ago, and I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to begin leveling in the first growing season or wait until next year?
@viardrums3 жыл бұрын
Great videos! Can you do an early season leveling and then another later season; particularly in spots? Or is that too much too soon?
@garyboardwine33493 жыл бұрын
All this is good for warm season grasses, or creeping bent , you take a lawn that's mowed at 2 "down to 1/2" you will be starting fresh lol, what he calls leveling is a actually the process of top dressing, which is part sand , peat or moss, depending on the lawn, detaching, aerating may be needed, he's using reel mowers, and his lawn is golf course quality, way above the average "lawn "

Hi Doc, I recently laid some sod over a section of my yard that was dug up to replace a water main last year. Two weeks ago we laid new bermuda sod over the affected area. Since then we have received about 6-7 inches of rain which has resulted in major settling and washout underneath the sod. I am wondering how frequently I can top dress and level, and what is a safe depth to add top dress material each time? Thank you!
