She made a good point about water roots. If you only let them get an inch or so long before planting in a substrate, they adapt to the change in media quicker than if the water roots have been allowed to grow long.

I fell in love with Hoyas after finding a 'Hindu Rope Plant' a.k.a. Hoya carnosa compacta, in a Home Depot over a decade ago. I was fairly new to house plants and mostly had a brown thumb. This plant far exceeded my budget for house plants, I had to have it! I lived in the Mid Atlantic region at the time and being a house plant, she never bloomed. However, I still adored her for the sheer beauty of her form and had to have more varieties! Fast forward and I'm now living in southwest FL. I still have my Hindu rope, only she now happily lives outside and flowers profusely most of the year (right now she's almost covered in lovely, sweet smelling pink clusters!). During the last hurricane, one of my variegated carnosas' that resided on a cement pedestal outside our front door was so large, I couldn't bring her in without destroying most of her as she had climbed up the brick facade of our house and had also rooted long tendrils all along the ground, not to mention she had to weight close to 50lbs! Long story short, she made it through, mostly unscathed except for the loss of a few tendrils. On a whim, I decided to place one of the tendrils (about a foot long) in the crotch of one of our live oak trees. My husband affixed a piece of plastic to hold roots in place and I stuffed it with orchid bark and sphagnum moss. Boy did that do the trick, her little lost 'arm' (I call her 'Amy') has gone crazy! She's climbing so fast I swear she gets longer every day! It's @ 18 months later and 'Amy' has been rewarding me with loads of flowers hanging from the huge tree limb she's chosen to clamber up. I'm so proud of her! Just goes to show, given the epiphytic environment some varieties so crave, they will reward you graciously!

Thank You, for the information. I met my 94 year old aunt, my father’s sister on March 17, 2020 for the first time. Discovered through AncestryDNA that I had four sisters and two brothers, only three are still alive and I am the oldest. I had gotten cuttings from her Hoya. She suffered a stroke on March 18, and passed April 1, 2020. So I am determined to keep it alive.

Thank you so much Summer! Your videos with Torill were both educational and enjoyable. I am a Hoya lover too. I do not see many around by me. I do have 5 and hoping to get more. I did propagate my Hoya Tricolor Carnosa Krimson Queen. It did take a long time to root. I put it in a wine glass full of fish tank water. I changed it twice a week. I just potted them up. Happy Easter! Gerry 😊

Peter Cardona - Sad to say, classical education is dead. As is correct punctuation, sentence structure and spelling.
@petercardona15595 жыл бұрын
@@dinganddoo2 it is with a heavy heart that I say I am in agreement. My suspicion that the classics are dead first came when I was reading a volume of the poetry of Ovid and Terence in Union Square Park. I began chatting with a Creative Writing major who said she had never even heard of them. 😥
@dinganddoo25 жыл бұрын
Peter Cardona - I couldn't have picked two different poets if I tried! While maybe not hearing of the ancient poetry of Ovid, you would think a millennial would have at least heard of the multiple award winning poertry of Terrance Hayes (if this is the Terrance you are referring to). I'm also quite sure only a handful have ever ever heard of the Dewey Decimal System. While I'm a 'few' years beyond the Millennium stage, their writing and speaking skills are so poor it makes my teeth itch. It's all very sad indeed... Imo, this is indicative of a world full of classical literature and language being flushed down the toilet, so to speak.

i know you probably won't see this, but i was wondering- so i got a hoya carnosa (krimson queen) about a month ago. earlier today, i was looking at it and it had super quickly put out two tiny black and red leaves. the red was where the white usually is and the black was where the green usually is. i freaked out and i can't find the answer of why it's doing that anywhere

stress it a bit (give it more light and let it dry out a little more than normally for a while). could also help to take some cuttings from it. when it blooms it's a lot more thirsty so you'll need to give it more water than normal then

I'm just starting with hoya kerri and another more common one, and they are amazing. I have unrelated question tho. Are there any plants that thrive in very bright, direct sunlight that aren't cacti? I have all my windows facing south on the forth floor, with no trees or anything and although I like having lots of light in all my rooms, so that I can have lots of plants even in far corners, I still would like to have something on my windowsill and everything dies there! Even my succulents (jade plant, rhypsalis and sanseveria cylindrica) are fine but get ugly discoloured. Any tips? I say no to cacti because I don't like their needles (childhood trauma 😅). Maybe I could like some soft needle types or something similar, but I generally prefer leafy plants. Love your channel, any suggestion would be appreciated. 😁
