Your carnosa is so tiny! It's precious. That was my first hoya, about 20+ years ago. I have so much of the stuff I can't give it away. 4 pots super bushy about 6' long. The longest it ever got was 15 feet. I've pruned my hoyas but I stick them in soil with the air roots intact. When they start to show buds, I know they are growing. Also you know they do well because the leaves aren't wilting or shriveling.

I've watched several videos on rooting and starting new Hoyas, but yours was much clearer than the others and gave me the nerve to move forward with my transplants. I inherited my plant from my mother who passed away and I had no idea how to care for it. It only produced a few flowers and then nothing more. It put out a second long shoot, but it ended up turning woody. What makes them do that? Would it be best to just cut it off? Should I transfer the plant to a larger pot with fresh soil? Some videos tell you to leave your plant root bound and be careful not to disturb the roots if you do move it to a larger pot. You didn't seem to think that was an issue at all. Really enjoyed your video and liked your straight-forward attitude. You definitely have a green thumb! Thanks for any help you could give me.

Very cool use of foil as a cutting support. I will try that next time. I recently ordered 4 hoya carnosa plants 2 months ago to give them a go for the first time, and sadly some arrived with miner damage one with a broken stem and some leaves that came lose with just little nubs of there stems still with the leaf. So I placed them all together in some water as I figured why not. Well I guess I was lucky because all but one of the leaves now has roots and are now potted in my grow mix. I was amazed as I didn't thank the single leaves would have rooted but they seemed to root faster then the stem piece. Amazing little plants these Hoya's!

Hi Betsy! I haven't been afraid to take cuttings from my hoyas. However, hearing you explain the positives vs. negatives of the issue have convinced me of the benefit in doing so. I only started collecting my 40+ hoyas last year and a few of them are sizable. Since I'm not only as old as dirt; but also, in declining health (according to my so-called "specialists"), I've never really EXPECTED to see my hoyas bloom. EVER! NOW, here YOU are telling us that ALL hoyas don't necessarily HAVE TO BE rootbound in order to flower! THAT, my dear, changes everything, as far as I'm concerned! GAME ON! Let me grow these babies! Betsy, do you fertilize your hoyas? If so, with what? (If I've asked you this previously, please remember that old folks are forgetful & are forever repeating stuff. Just respect your elders & answer the damn question. Ok? Lol!) Also, what kind of water do you root your cuttings in? Tap? Distilled? Room temp? What? Thank you in advance for your answers and thanks for sharing your knowledge, time & sense of humor with your followers! Plant LOVE!🌾💜

Hey Margie! I root my Hoya bella and Hoya carnosa cuttings in regular tap water that I refresh every 1-2 days. I have been rooting all the others in Hoya potting mix with or without root hormone, I don't really see any difference, they always root easily for me. As for fertilizer, in the past, when I watered my orchids, I would have some left over orchid fertilizer and I'd pour that into my Hoya bella but that was back when I only had two Hoyas! Now it's time to do a bit of research on Hoya fertilization and that I will. 🙂You can expect information about that from me in the future.

Really enjoyed your video, informative and humorous! I bought a potted Hoya cutting a year and a half ago while knowing absolutely nothing about Hoyas. It never changed or grew at all in that whole time, and I started to wonder if it was even alive anymore. Then all of a sudden it sprouted two new really looong vines. I think it needs to be repotted now (as I’ve noticed roots starting to grow through the drainage hole of my pot) and also pruned as I prefer it to be bushier. Most of the leaves on the new vines are now full size, but they’re sparsely spaced and growing only singularly. They aren’t nicely “clustered’ like the original leaves closer to the pot. Is this a normal growth pattern? Should I still attempt to prune these vines now to propagate?

@betsybegonia5 жыл бұрын
Hoyas require very bright, indiect light to bloom. It has nothing to do with being root-bound. Many people like to say that Hoyas "like to be root bound" and this helps initiate blooming but I've found no evidence to actually back up these claims. If I ever do, I will happily change my mind and the way I do things. So far my Hoya lacunosa and Hoya davidcummingii have bloomed twice in the past 5 months and neither are root bound plants.

To be honest most of my Hoya are very small plants that can't be cut yet. I prune my Hoya bella once in a while when she gets too long and starts getting in my way (she's above the couch now and I need to trim her up because her vines are almost touching it, and she used to be above my sink and I'd prune her stems when she began getting involved with the dishes). I was going to prune my Hoya davidcummingii but I just discovered yesterday that it's putting out pedicels and will bloom so I'll wait til after it blooms.

Hi Betsy! Thank you so much for this video! I need to repot some Hoyas and pot some cuttings. The Hoyas in pots aren't full and the stems are very long. I think I will prune them so I can add them for fuller plants. Do you know if it's okay to plant several different varieties together, or are they better off on their own? I'm not sure what variety they are. I think my biggest Hoya is a carnosa, but not totally sure. It is the only one I have that doesn't need repotted and is nice and full. It has flowered twice now and hoping for more flowers soon. I've heard that Hoyas don't like to be repotted, is this true? If you've already covered this, I don't remember ~ "old timers" disease..... :-) Also, I NEED to find a Hoya bella!
@betsybegonia5 жыл бұрын
It's fine as long as their care requirements are the same. Like Hoya carnosa in its various forms and Hoya wayetii have the same care requirements so they could do okay together but I'd never put H. bella with H. carnosa because H. bella requires more water. Same with H. lacunosa, it needs a lot of humidity and doesn't like to dry out so much between waterings like H. carnosa.

Do you have a video where you show the cuttings that have rooted in the water? Also I started watching your videos recently and you are fun to watch 😄 thank you for sharing with us your passion for Hoyas and all the care tips!

Can you show us the rooting in water after you've pruned those 2 nodes? I tried it earlier but it didn't work. Can you advise why?
@Jay-wz8zw5 жыл бұрын
Hey Betsy! Can you. make a video about how to prune? I am so scared to trim my rubber plant, stromanthe, prayer plant, etc! When should you prune? When not? SO SCARY
@betsybegonia5 жыл бұрын
I recently made a video about pruning cane Begonia, but for now I simply don't have any other plants to prune. But as I go along, I will make videos about pruning when I feel that a plant of mine needs pruned.

Which side of the cutting needs to be in the water? You did it on opposite sides in your video😊

Is it ok to cut closer to the first node and thereby have more stem for the water?

I have a very bushy Hoya Carnosa Variegated, I bought it a few days ago and most of its leaves are in bad condition (Broken in half, unappealing brown spots). Is it okay to cut off a leaf where it comes off the stem? Will a new leaf grow there?

I've been trying to find a 'how to' on this topic exactly for days now .. this was the most clear & educational video I have watched . Thank you . I was seriously stressing about pruning my Hoya. One question I have a vine about a yard long , so I could cut that up & make a few new plants?

Thank you. I needed that...yes all 13 minutes and 31 seconds of it! Definitely a keeper...now let me go get my scissors 😛

I have an old Hoya that is beautiful & healthy. It only has 1 “peduncle” how can I encourage more flowers. Thanks so much
@betsybegonia5 жыл бұрын
Hoyas need bright, indirect light. The brighter the light, the more likely they are to produce flowers.
@bonniesbestcreations68175 жыл бұрын
Betsy Begonia In do have it in a bright window. Does pruning it help to produce more flowers
@betsybegonia5 жыл бұрын
@@bonniesbestcreations6817 Not necessarily. Pruning it just encourages the plant to produce more new growth, like branches from lower down on the plant, which could produce flowers, which would help a Hoya create more flowers in the long term.

So you DON'T need to have the node in the water like most other plants? Just the stem? I have a Hoya Compacta i want to prune and propagate, would it be the same way? I feel i would have to remove some leaves because they are so close together on the stem...
@betsybegonia2 жыл бұрын
Correct, the node does not have to be submerged. It will put out roots along the stem.
