So glad he decided to include this song on the album as a "bonus" ... this song moves me to the core... this song has stuck with me from the first moment I heard it and I'm pretty sure it will stay with me for a very long time

Love his description of this song and the process. I never realized how tragic this song is, but now that I know, it just has that much more of an effect on me. The fact that he recorded the official track on a rooftop and that he stayed away from excessive production on this song just makes it more perfect. It doesn't need anything else. Just the beautiful guitar melody and the poetic, heartbreaking lyrics.

I first listened to this album last year in the wake of TMTC's success but i didn't think much of it. When he was nominated for a Grammy, I was rooting for him to win so badly not only because TMTC was one of my fav songs in the past year but I honestly think it was the most deserving and this is coming from a massive Sam Smith fan. I revisited the album after his performance at the Grammys and I haven't gone a day without playing it from start to finish since then. It's an absolute masterpiece!! It's interesting to hear his interpretation of the tracks, I like how layered and intricate his lyrics are. My favourite songs are It will come back ( I love that "Jesus Christ" yelp lol) and Jackie and Wilson. I should mention the modern classic, TMTC but it's not fair on the other tracks ha OT: First time hearing his speaking voice btw, so much calmness and humility contained within such great talent. I hope to see you live this summer Hozier and ready for the next offering :)

Her eyes and words are so icy Oh but she burns Like rum on the fire Hot and fast and angry As she can be I walk my days on a wire It looks ugly, but it's clean Oh mamma, don't fuss over me [Chorus:] The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine Calls of guilty thrown at me All while she stains The sheets of some other Thrown at me so powerfully Just like she throws with the arm of her brother But I want it, it's a crime That she's not around most of the time [Chorus:] Way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine Her fight and fury is fiery Oh but she loves Like sleep to the freezing Sweet and right and merciful I'm all but washed In the tide of her breathing And it's worth it, it's divine I have this some of the time [Chorus:] Way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine

Carol D. This is awfully late (but I just saw the video today and decided to read the comments, so you'll have to forgive me), but I managed to transcribe what he's saying about the song. See below. Cherry Wine was recorded on a hotel roof, an abandoned hotel roof, at five in the morning, in Greystones. I don't want to incriminate myself, so I didn't -- I wasn't trespassing, I'd say. I swear. To me, it's about -- again, it's open to interpretation -- but the sentiment behind that song was also captured in a song that Carole King wrote called "He Hit Me and It Felt Like a Kiss", and that's kind of what Cherry Wine is about. I think we kept the live version... I think it worked. We filmed it at the same time. I was doing a photoshoot with a photographer and I asked him the night before 'can you record audio' or 'can you record film', I should say. 'Cause I'm gonna bring a microphone and we're gonna try and do a session to see if it works.' And I think there was something nice about that recording, there was -- again, it was five in the morning, and dawn was breaking, so there's like a dawn chorus there, and there's just a nice atmosphere to it. You can hear birds singing and stuff like that. I was very tired when it was done, but I think there's an atmosphere to it, and I didn't want to look into arranging -- to me, melodically, there's other songs -- I don't know, it just worked. I didn't feel the need to explore more production for it, I suppose. Simple as that. It's kind of on the album as a bit of a bonus, you know what I mean. Just to tie it all up.
