"Her fight and fury is fiery. Oh, but she loves like sleep to the freezing." Is so powerful. To compare someone's love to sleep for the freezing. To slip into a sleep while cold is a peaceful neglect to yourself. You wont feel the cold if you give in and fall asleep, but the damage and severity of freezing is still there. Allow yourself to ignore the harmful abuse of her anger because the love she gives can make it worth it. Or at least that's how I interpreted it.
@mikaelat.62755 жыл бұрын
Bryanna Beasley the ‘sleep to the freezing’ line goes a bit further. When you’re absolutely freezing, sleep can be very enticing as it is relief from the pain but it’s actually really dangerous and it’s likely you won’t ever wake up. So her love looks like a sweet relief but it will kill him if he chooses it.

i think there’s also another level to this- men almost never come out about being abused by their partner, especially if their partner is a woman. they usually get laughed at. it’s a product of societal expectations that men must be strong and invulnerable. so by having the man say to his mum “don’ fuss over me”, he’s rejecting her care and concern bc he’s ashamed of being abused by his female partner

It's hard to pick a favorite Hozier song, because they are all so wonderful in their own right. But I keep coming back to this one. It's so magnificently constructed and executed. It's a little jewel. The way the music rises on “some of the time”, but the sung melody falls against it on “time” is exquisite. The revealed dejection is palpable and heartbreaking. The lyrics are simply stunning. “Like sleep to the freezing”. If you’re freezing, sleep is the siren that pulls you down to your death, all the while offering the sweet lie of warmth and comfort. Under normal circumstances, sleep is restorative and healing. But when you’re freezing, sleep will kill you, so softly and gently, you’ll never notice, convinced that sleep is what you need, and unable to pull away. Sleep is also a way of shutting your eyes to reality, in order to enter a world of dreams. The icing on this video’s perfection - in addition to the room’s wonderful acoustics - is his glasses. They’re fantastic - they add that extra note of vulnerability to the song’s protagonist. It’s a lovely effect. Andrew’s what, 24 here? I don’t know when this song was written, but it’s so well-polished that I’d think he’s had it in his pocket for a while, maybe even since he was 19 or 20. I mean, what kind of kid writes like that?? This genius does. He writes characters that become *real people*, brought to life by the singing. It’s an incredible talent. This is the first song on a Mahogany Sessions playlist that includes other artists, and whoa...what an error in judgement that was, lol. This song is so well-crafted and richly sung, that it kind of inadvertently made the other artists and songs look like the Kindergarten Sessions. This is no dig on the others, it’s just that Cherry Wine and Hozier in general is such a cut above, that it maybe was an error to put anything else in such close quarters for comparison.

Her eyes and words are so icy Oh but she burns Like rum on the fire Hot and fast and angry as she can be I walk my days on a wire. It looks ugly, but it's clean, Oh momma, don't fuss over me. The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine. Calls of guilty thrown at me All while she stains The sheets of some other Thrown at me so powerfully Just like she throws with the arm of her brother. But I want it It's a crime That she's not around most of the time. The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine Blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine. Her fight and fury is fiery Oh but she loves Like sleep to the freezing Sweet and right and merciful I'm all but washed In the tide of her breathing. And it's worth it, it's divine I have this some of the time. The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine.

The acoustic intro almost made me cry, but I lost it at "All while she stains, the sheets of some other." This song is ruining my life, to be honest. So relevant. So conflicting. SO TRUE.

I believe that the woman is abusing the man (physically and emotionally), but he loves her so much that he doesn't recognize it as abuse.

I feel like the song is about a man who loves a girl who leads him on but doesn't love him in return. Despite the fact that she mentally abuses him, he's still in love with her and doesn't care. That's just what i think?

Hozier seems to be an emotional sponge, meaning he can absorb and relate anguish and turmoil without experiencing the trauma 1st hand. That allows him to translate to the beautiful musical literature that these underappreciated masterpieces.

How do you know he wasn't abused? He mentions a person with green eyes in his new song and I dont think he was singing this for some abused man I think he was andcis being abused by a someone he's intimate with. If he's notvbeingvabused or never was let's hope John plays no role because he was is the most abusive man I've ever met and known!

Here's the deal--an artist writes a song. They may draw from their own experience. They may find inspiration elsewhere. It holds meaning to the artist. However, regardless of the original inspiration, various listeners may interpret the lyrics in different ways. The song may be about an abusive relationship, but someone in love may be moved by a particular line that speaks to them. Art is fluid. This song is so beautiful that it leaves me breathless.
@andrewlev22308 жыл бұрын
A particular line yes I can understand that. But take into account the other parts of the verse and chorus this is about abuse. It is about being in a toxic relationship that you know you shouldn't be in yet for whatever reason you are completely devoted to them. It is beautiful and wonderful in every aspect...

I think this is one of the best songs about abuse that's ever been written -- it's so temptingly lovely that there's a part of you that just wants to make it a love song or to rewrite it into a happy end, but you can't; not once you realize what it's actually about. (I suppose you could make it about a consensually, very specifically kinky relationship, but. It's not MEANT to be taken that way, and it's hard to make all the words work.) It's so powerful because of that.

Sorry for the late reply but we accept the love we think we deserve and let me tell you, you deserve so much more than what your ex gave you. So so much more. This sounds cliche but love yourself, acknowledge your value and worth. You're too worthy to be loved less than what you deserve. Please remember that the right person would never ever try to intentionally hurt you. She's not worth it and she's not the only woman in the world sooo pleasee don't ever come back to her. Missing someone is ok but I hope you see how not right she is for you.

Her eyes and words are so icy Oh but she burns Like rum on the fire Hot and fast and angry as she can be I walk my days on a wire It looks ugly, but it's clean Oh momma, don't fuss over me The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine Calls of guilty thrown at me All while she stains The sheets of some other Thrown at me so powerfully Just like she throws with the arm of her brother But I want it It's a crime That she's not around most of the time The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine Blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine Her fight and fury is fiery Oh but she loves Like sleep to the freezing Sweet and right and merciful I'm all but washed In the tide of her breathing And it's worth it, it's divine I have this some of the time The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine

Theres such a thing as emotionally abusive. They invalidate, gaslight you and manipulate you to doing their bidding, demanding your loyalty and respect while giving you none in return. It is mentally draining and can lead to depression and severe anxiety. Its okay to try to act stoic and "be a man" but don't get it twisted. Abuse comes in all forms

I had been drawn to this song for months. Play it on my guitar in my daily guitar fix. Yesterday I fucking burst into tears when I found out it was about spousal abuse. I had been identifying with the impressionist musical portrait of that painful life. Unbelievable song. I was an subtlety abused husband for years. Yes,it is subtle and you get used to it as you go on living just for the rare moments when things are good. Can't believe I am putting this pain in writting
