As someone with a lot of religious trauma, Foreigner's God made me burst into tears the first time I heard it. It's about colonization, and how foreigners will come in and wipe out the existing culture and gods, and leave the people in a state so wounded and desperate that they're crying out to a god for relief, but even then they have to call on the foreigner's imposed God because they've been cut off from all connection to their own. Seeing what Catholicism did in both Ireland (Hozier's home) and to the indigenous peoples of modern America (some of my background), I FEEL that connection of generational experience and trauma so deeply. Beautiful, poignant song for any colonized people.

YES and the line “i’ve no language left to say it” absolutely speaks to this too, bc of the loss/suppression of native languages. reminds me a lot of butchered tongue from his newest album (if you haven’t heard it already i think it would resonate a lot with you!)

"Cherry Wine" is one of my all-time favorite Hozier songs, specifically the lyric, "And it's worth it, it's divine. I have this some of the time." The very thought that keeps pulling you back into abusive relationships.

Foreigner’s god is about colonialism and how loss of a language forces you to alter your expressions of grief because you no longer have the comfort of your own traditions and language. I cannot wait for you to hear the rest. I thought his first two albums were some of the best I’d ever heard and then he released unreal unearth and somehow it blew them both away. Stunning, extraordinary work

I love that every now and again Hozier just sings us a spooky tale. I want less pop songs about dancing and more about corpses decomposing in a field romantically together or somebody digging up and falling in love with a bog body while maybe being in the bog covering up their own unspecified crime (?murder?). 😂

@@bennshouts another insight, the song is about a man's experience with his girlfriend/wife/partner abusing him, whilst in the music video it's the woman's experience of a man abusing her, so both perspectives are included

Wow!!! You really listened to this album with such an open heart, im so happy to see someone appreciating the music the lyrics, the soul behind it. My favorite song is In a Week and im so happy that you listed it as your favorite hidden gem as well!! Yes please, listen to his other albums! Wasteland, Baby! is such a masterpiece too of his, more rock sounds but also wistful post apocalyptic vibes and it’s just a great mix, highly suggest you listening to it! (Don’t forget the EPs! You missed out on this self-tilted album’s bonus tracks too, so please listen when you get a chance!) I noticed you liked his accent in Northern Attitude with noah kahan, and you noted it in Cherry Wine too; honestly you hear his accent the best in his newest album, he really lets it shine. Especially when he sings in Irish Gaelic, it’s beautiful to hear. I hope you continue to enjoy listening to his songs!

Strangely enough “Like Real People Do” is about “bog bodies”. I got curious about these lyrics years ago and looked it up and I was like okay wtf are bog bodies. Do yourself a favor and look at the Wikipedia page about bog bodies and then reread the lyrics of the song with that in mind. Love your reactions! My husband and I kind of claim “Work Song” as one of “our songs” not because we’re toxic lmao but just that idea of eternity with someone you love and that death couldn’t keep you from them. (The original “our song” is Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional-we’ve been married 20 years so that one goes back but maybe you could check it out if you haven’t heard it!)

From Eden is by far my favourite song from the album and I hv no idea why lol. It’s just so gorgeous and the lyricism is everything to me. The song itself is from the perspective of the devil looking at something so innocent. He’s trying to basically woo a woman even though he knows the relationship would be incredibly flawed. It’s just so pretty.

I marvel that you've managed to avoid Hozier so thoroughly so far. What a fun treat! Arsonist's Lullaby is probably my favorite of his, but Eat Your Young (on his latest album) is so deep and still a bop. For 'It Will Be Back', I loved this song for years, and then last year I watched a live version with Hozier playing in like an attic or something, and for whatever reason, the way the guitar was picked up in the live version was better. That eerie guitar stuff at the end, if you listen to the live version, is clearly a wolf howling.

The verses "You're familiar like my mirror years ago" or "No rolling eyes, no irony" as like the daughter is no more a teenager. I also like the "oh he's in love with a married woman, isn't he?" Interpretation lol. Anyways, loved your reaction, especially of the "In a week"❤

Never seen you before but I’m on a huge Hozier kick atm so this came across my page. Only halfway through but loving it so far!! Hozier’s lyrics are so incredible, and he’s not always talking from his own perspective. He brings in lots of mythical/literary/historical references and likes to embody a character when writing songs. I’m sure there’s lots of himself in the songs too but sometimes it’s mostly from the perspective of a made up character. Makes for such interesting layers of meaning in the lyrics! I’ll be keeping an eye on your page for your reactions to the next two albums too 😍

If you ever want an absolute gem of a folk album to listen to, please do yourself a favor and check out Just Another Diamond Day by Vashti Bunyan. She is also from the UK but from England instead if Ireland. The album was inspired by her two and a half year journey through Scotland on a horse drawn carriage, and you can totally get that vibe. Its such a wistfully beautiful listening experience, and while there is definitely lyrical content that can be deconstructed, its really just a vibe album. Its perfection lies in its simplicity, as it does not reach to explain some grand message, but exists in a more simple place of nature and dreams. Id love to see your reaction to it, or just hear your opinion about it because it has such a special place in my heart. I know you don't post a lot of reactions to music in this vein but I feel like you would really appreciate what this album has to offer!

you have to do Unreal Unearth (newest album) immediatelyyy. I love the self titled album, I was listening when it was first released (still have the CD somewhere in a drawer) and have loved his music since. But I will admit that it's actually the worst production of his 3 studio albums, and maybe even the least mastered of his incredible lyricism (even though it's still amazing and I love it dearly). Bear in mind he was like 23 when it was released and that's a feat in and of itself, let alone to produce something so beautiful. The newest album is beautifully produced, and his writing and voice have grown so much. You'll love it and I WILL watch the hell out of that video. He really got his footing with producers and stuff it seems. Also watch the music videos as you react or pull up genius lyrics or something, I hate to see the poetry go to waste!

He has said Hozier rhymes with "cozier." Definitely listen to his other albums. They are amazing too.

Arsonist's Lullaby wasn't even on the extended, it's on one of the early EP's (can't remember if it's the Take Me To Church EP, or the From Eden EP).

@@bennshouts Yes, probably. But still, such a pity ;) I want you to react to an album 5AM (Expanded Edition) by Amber Run. I think you will love it. That's one of my favourite bands from UK.

lol From Eden is actually not a happy song. It’s about someone whose innocence is lost looking at their innocent object of affection and worrying they might corrupt them. Kinda sad d and slightly dark actually. But Work Song is a song I definitely want at my wedding
