I think any other reaction would have been disingenuous. If there are coincidences this is one... I'm not sure there are coincidences. On and off trying to listen to music and news and all sorts of things and kept being distracted disrupted and back on going down a rabbit hole I was actually stop by singing this song which had a profound effect on the a long time ago. Did you hear what you said about your journey. I am still kind of overwhelmed right now because I've been on a journey feeling all alone. I have been on my own journey through many different churches and finally trying to step out and look from the outside and take a deeper look at what's real and what's not real. Not really sure what to say and I'm chattering away that I will be back and I will go back and hear more of what you have to say and what your journey is. The exactly what you said no matter what someone thinks or does that you don't agree with does not mean that you should not be kind that you cannot listen and try to understand. I spent many years basically being told to burn books and albums... I never did but it instilled in need a deep questioning. Is there something that I can't hear about or see about and understand that would be so impactful on my life and eternity there's something wrong with that kind of thought. You should be able to do anything and understand for ourselves. And no matter what be kind. I look forward to getting to know you better.

@@TheWolffAndTheMelody It's not about having a "master". It's about having someone who always loves you unconditionally, regardless of origin or sexuality. The actions of radicalized Christians do not reflect the message of Jesus' universal love. If we don't want such things to happen in the world, then we should all follow Jesus' first commandment: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” God is love and love is truth. People who do such a bad thing and attack someone because of their sexuality are not true Christians, but hypocrites who have not understood the goal of love in their own religion.

My mom, who believes in God but is against the institute said when this song came out how not Christian the Christianity is and this song so brutally represents that. As someone who would have burned at the witch trials this song has strong message of how in faith (Church) we grow up in shame and learn to shame others instead of love and acceptance. There is a lot to go in with the lyrics and the video itself. Hozier himself said "If you feel offended or disgusted by the image of two people kissing, if that's what it is, but you're more disgusted by that than the actual violence...I think you should take a look at your values, maybe."

I'm a queer leftist atheist. My negative feelings towards religion are 100% because of what happens in this video. The other day, someone came up to film me in my house, ding dong ditch me while screaming for me to go outside so that he could essentially assault me. I cannot speak for anyone else, but for me you silence and speechlessness was healing to see. I will always hold people accountable for their actions, but I also believe that for us to get better as a whole, we need to leave room for growth. I appreciate your response and I love you for changing and growing. It's not my place to forgive you for what you've done to others, but I do appreciate this video. Videos like this will help others also walk a better path like you are now. Keep growing. That is what will define you.

I am a queer, transgender man. I used to be a very devote Christian as well, and while I'm much younger than yourself, i understand the sheer amout of work it takes to deconstruct what you've been living and learned especially from something like the church. If no one else has told you this recently, or in general, I'm so proud of you for how far you've come on this journey 💜💜💜

I remember this came out around the time that there was a surge of anti-LGBTQ+ inquisitions, for a lack of a better term, in Russia (especially in the Chechen Republic), where groups would hunt down people on social media, raid their homes with weapons and video cameras, and film the beatings and post-torture confessions. Not even necessarily police, or government agents, just...people wielding their hatred so horribly. The song does largely align with the video in spirit (though there are certainly other viable interpretations), but they both made their own respective marks in pop culture at the time and cast a light on something important, in a way that was hard to stomach for a lot of people. I'm glad that long after its release, it's still earning fresh eyes like yours, especially in times like these recently with the surges in anti-LGBTQ+ hatred. Hozier's music is often quite political, but also rooted in empathy and with a finger on the pulse of the struggles people endure in their lives. It often doesn't cost anything to be kind, and even when it does, it's still worth it to bring a positive, loving energy into the world. We don't have to understand everything, we don't have to have an answer for every mystery we encounter in the world. The world is a less interesting place when only sameness is celebrated.

I did a song analysis essay for my Adavanced english class in 10th grade. Hozier is my favourite artist, and my teacher had told me "Maybe you should pick a different song, a lot of kids do Take Me To Church. It's overdone, but it is a good one." I didn't listen and chose it anyway. I already knew some of the deeper meaning, but I had never seen the music video, and in order to stand apart I drew a lot of my conclusions for the imagery present in the MV. I can't tell you how many times over the 3 week period I worked on the 2k word essay that I cried. I don't cry over music ever, I lack a lot of empathy, and it messes with how I perceive emotion. But for WEEKS I spent digging deeper into the music video and the lyrics. Each aspect bringing a new meaning and adding to the narrative that the song brings for me, although music is individual for each person. My teacher came to me after they had been marked and handed back; she sat down and said that what I had written had made her cry, and she could see the emotion behind my analysis. She said nobody had used the music video and it's imagery for their analysis before and that shocked me. The music video adds so much, and its so heartbreaking to know that it's a commentary on homophobia based killings in Russia. Knowing that this song came out 10 years ago and even then, in the recent past, that a country and global power was trying to commit what can only be chalked up to as genocide is disgusting. Your reaction is so genuine, and although wordless, your face portrays so much. I love this video.

It just reminds us that when you class people as “Other” and frame them as being unacceptable in the eyes of your personal deity, that just makes it so much easier to commit atrocities against them. We are, as a society, being conditioned to fear and hate anyone who isn’t in our particular social group. We need to be super suspicious of and distance ourselves from anyone that tries to make us think that way.

Hozier is one of my favorite artist. He writes music that provokes thought. His lyrics are rarely straightforward, loads of analogies and symbolism. I never saw this song as a condemnation of faith but more as a conversation and as I said to provoke a thought process. You should look more into Hozier's stuff, this is far from his best work even if it is the most well known song. All things end is a good recent song with a great video too. Or Eat your young, great song, I needed a few times to really get that video though.

Thank you for reviewing this song and video. This needs to be seen. When any ideology becomes distorted and extreme, hatred and violence is the likely outcome. The hatred and violence that I have witnessed and experienced personally and towards my LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters over the years have opened my eyes to what some humans are capable of. It resulted in my disillusionment, retreat/isolation and hypervigilence. I have to judge whether a person is actually safe or not before I engage with them at any personal level, but fortunately it isn't difficult.

Your silence really just shows the power of the song and your respect for it and its message. I think it might be cool for you to watch a live performance of this at one of his shows because it is sort of the opposite. You get to hear a roaring crowd singing along and Hozier almost always hangs a pride flag from his mic stand during the song in that spirit of full acceptance and support of all love. I've got a few on my channel from some of his shows in the past year and a half. There's just something healing to me about the atmosphere of being surrounded by love that fills the live performances

Healing can be a painful process. Give yourself grace. Look at how far you've come - a lot of people in this world think, for some reason, that religion is required to know empathy. That if someone else or Someone Else isn't telling you what to do, you won't know to do right. Now you're living proof that they're wrong, that kindness IS a human trait. We can lift each other up. This is also my first time watching this video and as a member of the lgbtqia+ community i really appreciate your empathy towards how some of us are treated. As much as it hurts to remember , i can recall being beat down in a stall at school because i had a non-binary pin on. I dont wish that on anyone. Some people are just hateful and stuck in their ways. You not being able to say anything and just reflecting on yourself and how you were raised is just great to see because not a lot of people can actually do that. I'm also going through struggles of distancing myself from the church and the toxicity inside if it, even though i havent been to church in 4 years. Its like it follows me around everywhere i go.

But the older I got the more I realized they were not following the truths in the Bible but instead their sole purpose was to make money and control and use us. I made the choice to leave and it was the best decision I ever made. I regret all the years lost slaving for them. You don't have to belong to a church to believe in God and study the bible and even though I still believe in God and read the bible I would never tell anyone else what to do or believe. This song really encapsulates how I felt at times before I even knew I was trans I knew that I wasn’t “normal” and it hurt I remember sitting in confession and just saying “I lied” i didn’t know about what but deep down I knew I was lying to the church, to my parents, to myself. Once I got away from the church I really started to learn about myself though I still felt guilt. I would realize I was trans and it has been simultaneously the most liberating and terrifying thing. I’ve experienced I’ll just leave it at bad things due to being trans including some from people I once considered friends. My life has been fear though I can only remember a tiny amount of it due to unknown traumas. (I’m eighteen). I just wanted to say thank you and I’m proud of you, it’s not an easy journey I’m sure but it gives me hope. And hope is the greatest weapon of the oppressed something that despite my hardships I’ve held onto if we have hope in the future, hope in others, and hope in ourselves (though I haven’t gotten that last one yet) we have a chance. I know you will probably never see this jumble of thoughts but I just wanted to say I’m proud of you, and thanks.

As a queer person, this song is so heavy and inspiring. I come from a strict religious background and I'm not accepted anymore because of their beliefs. I parted from the church a long time ago.

It's such a great tune , it never gets old. I believed he was actually talking about worshiping a woman, that's how I interpreted it at the time. I since read it was born out of his frustration of being raised in this religion and being dominated by it etc. But that's the great thing about music. We can all Interpret it in our own ways and relate it to what we are going through 🖤

Hozier has always put out some really hard hitting songs tackling homophobia, racism, domestic violence etc.... he has a really amazing way with lyrics and word play. Watching this, watching you react to this was very interesting given your history. Another one to look at by him is Cherry Wine.

Hozier had a quaker upbringing in a very catholic country. He is genuinely just a good guy. So much evil in the world done in the 'name' of religon. Love and respect should be our aim for ourselves and others. Xx

I was baptized at 6 years old…I lived the life of a faithful christian for most of my life. Only in the last 10 or so years I started to question organized religion. Why don’t all religions follow basic human decency. God created us all and holds us to all to the same standard. There shouldn’t be different rules depending upon where you were born. We are all shades of tan. Humans have perverted the and twisted the word of God to fit the desires of the populace. We are human so we are not god like. We can only aspire to be. I’m humbled daily and realize that I am not alone nor perfect and never will be. To be Godlike is an achievement, to be fought for daily. Only when you go to sleep at night and you can say honestly that you made a difference today in someone’s that you are actively doing God’s work.

I really appreciate your input and thoughts. Thank you so much for sharing. I personally have no desire to be like god, nor do I think I need a god to be a kind or caring human. I don't want to wake up to please a god and his purpose. I spent my whole life trying to please and be like him, when I was neglecting myself and had no idea who I was. Again, I know this is a touchy subject and mean no disrespect. I can only speak from my own history. But anything that has me bowing down to a deity of any religion can piss off. Now if someone has the desire, so be it and I will cheer them on. All religion and the pursuit of god got me was pain and depression. With that being said, I really do appreciate you sharing and respect you so much for your life and wish you all the best friend, truly.

I am from Catholic Ireland and was raised in a time when there was no separation between church and state, I truly believe in a higher power, God and Jesus, but I do NOT believe in organised religion and that is my own journey. I believe every human on this planet has their own path and journey, which is highly personal to them and is nobody else's business, so go forward on your own path and take the life lessons that come with it by growing and learning with your own eyes and experiences. Good luck and take care of yourself.

To be honest. I´m christian too but what the church and people made out of it is not in the right direction of what little I know from the bible. I wasnt raised to be a christian that goes to church and read the bible every day but to be a nice human beeing. I can`t imagine, if god made us all and gave us our free will and all, why would he be ubset with us if we have other thinking. I think we should apreciate being here and enjoy our time here. Everyone should be able to enjoy it. And if in the end god really said that we lived our life wrong then it has to be him to say it to us and not other humans. Jesus was kind to everybody and helped where help was needed, we should do the same.

I'm a Christian and always will be, but I will never Be involved in organized. Religion say they are the worst sinners. I figured that out as a child. When are pastor who wanted women to wear? No make up and only dresses ran off with his secretary for a week of. Love, he comes back. Gets forgiven, she gets divorced from her husband.

The video is tough, but shows only one signification of Hozier's words, according to him in interviews; that's also a song about love and I feel a lot of love in those lyrics. i think going more depth is having of course personnal interpretation or reading of it. The video, the music and the lyrics are moving, and put us in question in a very intimate area. Of course you're speechless, following what you've already entrusted us, at the discretion of your different reactions. We're here to share with you, therefore we can listen, and we can understand, words or silence. I'm grateful for living in a country where having no religion is main stream, more than one in two people have none. I know my country is not perfect, and I sometimes recriminate a lot about a lot of things I find wrong, and we are very far from harmony here, but that's one of the rare country in the world where I can live in peace without believing. That gives a different look on things too.

I like this band, they have done good songs in the past. I appreciate where this song is coming from and for those who have been wrapped up in faith and have gotten past it i can see where this song could hit on a different level. For me personally, i just think it gives more air time to religions who already have to much air time. As a song it was good. As a message,i just wish we as people could move past religions all together.

Every time I have to cry. My brother is gay We are all proud of him. But the video is the reality in Russia and so so many other countries. I remember when I heard Jimmy Somerville : smalltown boy again after a couple of years I realised what the lyrics were about. a young man having to leave his hometown because he’s bullied for being gay. I wish one day there’s a word where it doesn’t matter what sexuality or what skin colour you have.
