My interpretation of this song is that while the woman was feeling a moment of weakness, she goes to dig up the past that she has already buried. This past will hurt her if she digs it up. But while digging she finds him at his lowest point. He was dark and cold and dead in the dirt but and she was on her way to that point but they found each other and chose to not tell why they were in that dark place at the same time.

I love that while this song is about a very fantastical situation, having your lover dig you up from the earth, it resonates so well with the experience of battling insecurity when you find love. The character in this song is questioning why this person was digging in the first place, but ultimately gives up on asking because they are just happy to be loved. It is much like wondering why the person who loves you would have even been interested in someone like you and what the actual intentions were. I really love this song.

How incredibly refreshing. An extraordinarily rare thing in music videos: no quick cuts, and a stationary camera - none of that slow swooping/exaggerated-overdoing-the-hand-held-feel-on-purpose bullshit. This Song has become my good cry or play it 500 times in a row song. I’m a retired if you can be, adult film worker. I did it for over 20 years and we are all a little broken. When describing to civilians about the work I have often described how we try and kiss like real people do. It’s like we are not real people to ourselves and the viewers. And for me at least its kind of an unspoken thing not to ask how or why the other person ( the female) performer is doing the work also. So the hook just really gets me every time... I will not ask you, neither should you😇🙏🥲

this song is quite simple in retrospect but for some reason, i hold it so close to my heart. it's been my FAVORITE song for probably 3 years now, topping #1 on spotify the last two years. it's the first song on my queue when i get ready to go to bed and it's honestly such a calming song. it makes me feel like i'm being held close, warmth with someone. it both reminds me of a fall day at a cabin, sitting by a fire at 7 am with a lover and exchanging secrets we've never felt comtorable telling others but it also reminds me of a hot summer night, staying up until 3 am and sitting on the porch with your person as you lock eyes. nothing has to be said, the song speaks it all. this song will be nostalgic for me in years to come and i think i'll always listen to it and look back, thinking about how personal it was to me.

This is my favorite song. It has been for years. I like all kinda of music, Jazz, moe town, rock n roll, classic Elvis, The Lumineers, and even Ed Sheeran. I was raised with a grand piano in my home and a very musical family. However Hozier transcends the world of modern music. It’s like his music, his songs, bring me back down to earth and ground me. This song in particular. This is the most beautiful and raw song I’ve ever heard. It’s so natural and every time I hear it I feel like I’m falling in love. I feel like I should run outside and grab the earth and the dirt and just embrace it. This song is truly the most beautiful I’ve ever heard. Thank you Hozier.

i know you commented this 3 years ago but i just want you to know, it's also my absolute favorite song and has been for years (probably since 2017, when i first heard it) and it's just so peaceful. hozier's voice is so beautiful and calming, the way the words of the song come out and the way it's pronounced. you can FEEL the song. i've watched this video so many times, i can't even count and every single time i hear the strings of that guitar in the beginning, a indescribable feeling comes over my body. serotonin? peace? i'm not sure. this song means so much to me-- it's got me through so much and has been there in my darkest times.

Have you ever heard a song that reverberated in your ears with such pure clarity that it shook your soul? When the notes linger in your bones and tug strings attached to your ribcage? You don’t hear it anymore. You feel it. You feel it so deeply that it becomes apart of you. Yeah. This. This is shaking my soul.
