Lyrics:
When my time comes around
Lay me gently in the cold dark earth
No grave can hold my body down
I'll crawl home to her
When my time comes around
Lay me gently in the cold dark earth
No grave can hold my body down
I'll crawl home to her

did you ever buy an album because you heard like 2/3 songs and they seemed really cool and everything but then you listened to the whole album and you were like shit so there are only 3 solid songs on it and the other 10 or so are just there chilling in order to make a full-lenght album? did you feel betrayed and like you wasted 1hour of music listening? well it seems like with hozier you won't ever feel this way again go hozier you're the hoziest out there

I just saw him last week in San Francisco and he puts on a hell of a show. I've noticed people complain about his stoic features while performing on TV and his videos, but in concert he's really expressive and powerful. he's very relatable in person too, so shy and he did a hell of a cover of ariana grande for "funsies" he said. lol. I love music, but few artists touch me so deeply that I want to insert myself into their stories and live through their eyes. it's music for the soul, truely, and my favorite type, acoustic soul, bluesy and folk. if you havn't yet heard the album, you are missing out on a truely great artist of our generation. he's just a youngen too and I honestly don't think this album will be his best piece of work. did I mention he's absolutely gorgeous too? I think I actually melted and lost a piece of my soul at that concert. lol. and if the Irish accent wasn't the sexiest darn thing ever! :)

yea, he performed this song on a TV show awhile back, also when he performed on snl I kept seeing those comments. I think he just feels more comfortable on stage in his own show rather than on national television, and he said himself he's still not used to all the press. btw, your baby is adorable :)

Boys workin' on empty Is that the kinda way to face the burning heat? I just think about my baby I'm so full of love I could barely eat There's nothing sweeter than my baby I'd never want once from the cherry tree 'Cause my baby's sweet as can be She give me toothaches just from kissin' me When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her Boys, when my baby found me I was three days on a drunken sin I woke with her walls around me Nothin' in her room but an empty crib And I was burnin' up a fever I didn't care much how long I lived But I swear I thought I dreamed her She never asked me once about the wrong I did When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her My baby never fret none About what my hands and my body done If the Lord don't forgive me I'd still have my baby and my babe would have me When I was kissing on my baby And she put her love down soft and sweet In the low lamp light I was free Heaven and hell were words to me When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her

I feel like he is the Bob Dylan of this generation. Not about social injustices and about politics or anything else bob sang and wrote about but by how beautifully he writes. Not many artists come up with such clever pieces. In my opinion anyway. Not trash talking about any artists though i just think his songs are so poetic.
@sunriseseance

Maybe the Leonard Cohen of our generation? Has a similar introspective and personal focus, and a similar (though nowhere near identical or unoriginal) beautiful use of language. Also hi sorry for replying a year after you posted this but I love Dylan and Cohen and Hozier so much and your comment delighted me!

This is exactly what my husband and I were going thru when we first met. We were both in such a dark place but some how we held each other up. I lost my children and was so desolate I lost my will to live. He saved me. I still don’t even know how I came to deserve the love he poured into me. He found me as a lost stranger he forgave me for the drunken nights the days I spent lying in bed recovering sweating out the sins and sadness in me he healed me. I wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for him. This song I discovered in that darkness. I’ll never forget that time in my life.

Now it still has views of just tens of thousands compared to the millions it probably actually has. good thing this video still retains it's views numbers after being put back up.

one of the most amazing things about hozier's music is how he makes love sound like a spiritual experience. and there's something just so powerful about the connections he describes- mind, body, and soul, intertwined so closely so sometimes the lines blur regarding where one person ends and the other begins. there's something beautiful about that

I just think about my baby I'm so full of love I could barely eat There's nothing sweeter than my baby I'd never want once from the cherry tree 'Cause my baby's sweet as can be She give me toothaches just from kissin' me_ _When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her_ _Boys, when my baby found me I was three days on a drunken sin I woke with her walls around me Nothin' in her room but an empty crib And I was burnin' up a fever I didn't care much how long I lived But I swear I thought I dreamed her She never asked me once about the wrong I did_ _When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her_ _When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her_ _My babe would never fret none About what my hands and my body done If the Lord don't forgive me I'd still have my baby and my babe would have me When I was kissing on my baby And she put her love down soft and sweet In the low lamplight I was free Heaven and hell were words to me_ When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her _When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her_

My wife and i dated when we were in high school we got engaged but were too young and immature; so we ended up not working out then. I moved on with my life not liking to dwell on the past. I told myself I no longer loved her. That year work song came out. And even though her and I no longer communicated and I swore up and down we would never get back together, this song would shake me to my very core and I would always think about her. Four years later we lived very very different lives and in even more different worlds and we both happened to be in our home town at the same time for a couple days and we crossed paths by simple chance. Those hours we spent together before she left the next morning were more meaningful than the four years before that day. It was as if we never spent a day apart. Today is the one year of when we started dating again. And we married February 16. It still shakes me how much i love this girl... Edit. I never expected to have so much feedback on this comment. But a little more detail for those who care. After we had our seemingly perfect night together she left town the next day and I tried to think little of it (I told myself we will never be again) but one day whilst playing my ps4 I called her out of the blue and we talked on the phone for about 6 hours that night. We hung up and did the same thing a couple nights in a row. Then one night I FaceTime her and we spent all night FaceTiming. A day or two pass and we started watching movies together and even getting the same dinner in order to be as close as possible without being near one another. One night our movie ends and we are both lying down drifting off to sleep facing the camera she says half asleep "I still love you". with my heart in my stomach i simply say I love you too. It was Thursday night when this happened. She lived about 9 hours away and I told her I'm going to visit her in a couple weeks or a month and she said jokingly/half serious "why not this weekend". "I work a lot and need to make plans' I told her. But something about this girl always made me spontaneous. So I switched shifts the next day with my buddy and with little to no planning I drove out to see her. We had a great weekend together and we talked about taking it slow and seeing where things go. The Sunday before I left she showed me in a little momentos box that she still had her engagement ring and her bands too. This made my heart sing it truly did. We spent a week or so "taking it slow" but we clearly both wanted to be together so we became official. 😇 the next hurdle was me telling my mother (my mom loves loved this girl very much. And my wife has a huge amount of respect for my mother so it was very important to her that she accept her back again) when I initially told my mom about us getting back together she instantly rejected the notion and did not want me to date her again. She said the only way she will accept her again is if she still had her engagement ring. My wife then gf quickly produced a picture with it on her hand. And my mom laughed and was happy for us. This happened late June early July. By late October I proposed to her and we flew to Canada and eloped in February. (Reasons as to why we did this is a whole other story thats us in my profile pic) lol

If someone asks me how I want to be loved I would simply tell them "It would be something similar to a hozier song" because words can't express enough how he makes love sound so fiery, so tender, so poetic and all consuming whenever I listen to his work. Hozier makes loving feel like a religion I have to worship every single day rather than just be something I should acknowlege its existence. Plus, watching this reinforced my big fat crush on Irish guys, that can rock a long mane of hair and has a knack of twisting words like a medieval bard. My single ass quivers in delight and admiration at the thought.

does anyone else get that feeling when you listen to Hozier and it's more than you liking the music but it almost resonates through your whole soul and you can feel it on a spiritual level even if the words don't actually relate to your life at the current time and you just kind of feel this ethereal moment where all at once this sort of sonorous tone in his voice washes over everything in a swirling kaleidoscope of graceful serenity and mysterious chaos and sometimes it's uncontrolled or wistful or messy but it's always beautiful and you can't help but to feel it so incredibly deeply with your entire being

Try listening to the REAL Work song by a jazz quartet. If you put in work song on KZbin it's the black and white one, has a similar experience.

I still can't get over that song, even after probably a hundred listenings. The way he describes how he feels home with his lover and what it's like to be loved in spite of his mistakes is incredible. I love that he goes so deep into all the feelings ("I'm so full of love I could barely eat"). He's such a wonderful lyricist and poet

@ofure obaseki Yes, totally! I think he once mentionned that he likes to explore each feeling to its deepest and purest form, this is totally what he did with love in this song 🙂 this is probably due to his love of poetry and his love of the blues

Emy Jolie I love it because it’s not like these new songs about fucking all night or getting drugged up together. It expresses how true love should feel. Not this fake idea that love is some kind of joke like these rappers or Ariana grande.
