Take Me To Church (letter) My lover's got humour She's the giggle at a funeral Knows everybody's disapproval I should've worshipped her sooner If the heavens ever did speak She is the last true mouthpiece Every Sunday's getting more bleak A fresh poison each week We were born sick You heard them say it My church offers no absolutions She tells me: Worship in the bedroom The only heaven I'll be sent to Is when I'm alone with you I was born sick, but I love it Command me to be well Ah, amen, amen, amen Take me to church I shall worship like a dog At the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins So you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I shall worship like a dog At the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins So you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life If I'm a pagan of the good times My lover is the sunlight To keep the goddess on my side She demands a sacrifice Drain the whole sea, get something shiny Something meaty for the main course That's a fine looking high horse What you got in the stable? We've a lot of starving faithful That looks tasty, that looks plenty This is hungry work Take me to church I shall worship like a dog At the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins So you can sharpen your knife Offer me my deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I shall worship like a dog At the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins So you can sharpen your knife Offer me my deathless death Good God, let me give you my life No masters or kings When the ritual begins There is no sweeter innocence Than our gentle sin In the madness and soil Of that sad earthly scene Only then I am human Only then I am clean, oh, oh Amen, amen, amen Take me to church I shall worship like a dog At the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins So you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I shall worship like a dog At the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins So you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life

[Intro] Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm [Verse 1] Boys workin' on empty Is that the kinda way to face the burnin' heat? I just think about my baby I'm so full of love, I could barely eat There's nothin' sweeter than my baby I'd never want once from the cherry tree 'Cause my baby's sweet as can be She'd give me toothaches just from kissin' me [Chorus] When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her [Verse 2] Boys, when my baby found me I was three days on a drunken sin I woke with her walls around me Nothin' in her room but an empty crib And I was burnin' up a fever I didn't care much how long I lived But I swear, I thought I dreamed her She never asked me once about the wrong I did [Chorus] When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her [Verse 3] My babe would never fret none About what my hands and my body done If the Lord don't forgive me I'd still have my baby and my babe would have me When I was kissin' on my baby And she put her love down, soft and sweet In the low lamplight, I was free Heaven and hell were words to me [Chorus] When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her 🍒🦷💝🥶🤓👻

Not surprised to find Take Me To church labeled as "work" song. Great works! Edit: as told by reply - not true - "work song" is the name of a different song. If interested in theory of chords: Insert, edited after having worked on what follows, inspired to thinking out loud. The following analyzing may seems super-fluous should B flat major turn out to be the key of the song (then the song would still be esteemed as about a modulation to C major if key is Bflat maj, or, more likely, from F major to G major - as this song I found classified as in G major! Nonetheless, the "unusual" about this song, I insist, to me.then is the modulation in key , at 3:48 there is a rough lead guitar insert that starts on G and ends on F, where the middle note is not B but B flat - this is not G major but G minor ). Wonder why it's named "work" song. New to chords as harmonization of melddy the B and the B lat note are the ones I currently think the "work" is on. Maybe Sheeran is being welcomed for heralding his sayings that any hit these days just needs no more than 4 chords To me, beginner to harmonizers, it's about the B flat resolving to maybe B. That could be a C7 as V to F major. The appearing G minor would make up the relative minor to F. Yeah, to have a regular V you would make up the G - by lifting up the Bflat to the B - in singing out - possibly loud. Btw. thank oyu for letting me thinking out loud at your place! Contrary to this, Take Me To Church could mean some "Don't get me out of here", as home might be a turnaround Well, as for me, I feel successfully "taken to church" as I came from Sheeran's sayings to the alternative which is F and G as I and II, diatonic, so-called church modes, interchanging, in some turnaround, with B flat as I and, thus, C minor as diatonic II ins - that much I know "Dorian". I thought twice I, II, F/G, B flat/C. This makes E flat as a note that decides, as, to me, other I/II might be the quint up, the Cmaj/Dmior. I there is E flat or not is the alternative "7 see" to the B note. Never mind the above! Great for thinking out loud, I hope! I shall re-listen. Thank you for providing!.
