You are surprising, not only because of the simplicity that solves things that are complicated, but also because of the patience you have in explaining in such detail. I have the exact same problem, and to think I found it myself with a chinese multimeter and a zippo petrol is beyond me. If only I came across this video earlier. I should mention that its my first time trying to diagnose a faulty motherboard. You sir are the best of the best. I told everyone that same thing you told us at the end. THE LAPTOP WILL WORK WITHOUT THE DIODE TRUST ME. Its only there to protect from universal chargers which exactly was the case of my laptop and why that diode went faulty. @Sidman7234 жыл бұрын
I have seen this diode shorted before in other similar laptop repair videos. It is for reverse power protection. But if this diode shorted out it may have done so to protect the rest of the power circuits. So by not replacing it there will be no protection from this happening again. So maybe it is better to replace it.
@igork.22712 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the only think I am not agreeing with Sorin it's not replacing the stuff he's removing. I believe that they are there for a reason and should be replaced, at least from another old spare motherboard. Other than that he is great at explaining and teaching us electronics repairs.

I think protecting MB with a zener diode is a bad idea [when you are using a switching power supply]. Just think about the higher spike like 35-40V..

Hi. Find a short after a mosfet but I think my power supply (Lavolta) is protecting itself, even if I put 3 V. When I check the shorten, the Power Supply Lavolta go down from 3V (my tuning) to 0,4 V... . I precise that I already use your tip : add a 1 meter cable for the test pin (from power supply) to simulate a receptor, and avoid auto protection of it. Any idea ?

After removing the shorted diode, you checked the area where the diode was (17:07). Your meter reading showed one end was connected to ground & the other end showed 19 volts. Then you said "we are saved". Can you tell us why it's OK not to have any diode there? In other words how did you know that the computer would work even without replacing the diode?

If just recovering the info - yes. But if you'll continue using the HDD as usual, better replace it so it has over-voltage protection ;) Damn, HDDs are real picky when it comes to power supply fluctuations :P

Thanks for this great video. Can you please explain a little further why you cut down 19V to 3.5V ( in video at about 12 minute)?
@electronicsrepairschool7 жыл бұрын
because a lab power supply will cut the power down in case of short in order to protect in self, so i lower the voltage i ask kindly ' please, are only 3.5v, can you supply 3Amps even if is short?' and she said yes :)
@electronJarvs6 жыл бұрын
Look up ohms law it should explain it better, but basically the lower the voltage the harder it is for current to move at a given resistance. You can measure the resistance of the short and work out how much voltage you need for x amount of current to flow using ohms law. His power supply has over current protection and that is why it shuts off, 19v allowed more current than he would want or the thing could supply so shuts off.
