Sorry about the lack of multimeter cam. Looks like I forgot to include it in the export - not worth destroying the analytics with a reupload for that though, so it'll be back next time.

When I started learning board repair, I found out quickly how important schematics were. Some KZbinrs just post easy looking videos of shorted and broken caps and they give a quick explanation leaving a lot out. Also, I do have to say, this channel is the only channel that really has helped me learn board repair. If you want to truly learn board repair, this is the guy to follow.

If I understood correctly, the short was between layers of the board at that one point right ? You couldn't fix by cutting a small section of board away or micro-drilling a hole there etc, and re-routing a couple of traces if need be ?

I did wonder that, but wasn't going to start looking up benchmarks in the middle of recording. As long as there's 4 physical cores, I'm happy, after that IPC is king as far as I'm concerned. 2c4t CPUs I tend to avoid, because even with good IPC, 2 cores are just easy to overwhelm.

Yea based on the writing on the board, I'm wondering if this CPU got reflowed or something like that at some point. Wild speculation, but that hand writing on the board ain't factory.

you are overcomplicating it , there is close to 0 ohm short on power rail , injecting 0.8v can't damage anything , there ain't a thing on this board that's meant for voltages lower than that.
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 3 ай бұрын
And then you inject on a sense line that goes into the EC and kill the board. I am teaching an abundance of caution, but also teaching people how to identify sections and navigate a board is never a waste of time. Blind repair only gets you so far - at some point you need to learn how to figure the board out.

There's two topologies for the main power rail, Hybrid or Narrow VDC. I need to make a video about it some time, but it's on the bucket list. Just a thought... how common are this kind of failure's? Do u think it has any tng to do with PCH and CPU being on the same chip? If so how concerned should i be coz i got msi modern 15 laptop with the same design... pch and cpu on the same chip. I've had it for a yr and its a nice laptop. With worst possible screen hinge designs...
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 3 ай бұрын
PCH failure is very common, yea. And yes, the PCH doesn't like the amount of heat that the CPU core right next to it is kicking out. However, this is basically how the vast majority of modern mobile CPUs are built (as a CPU/PCH combo chip) so there's not really anything you can do about it. Like, buying a different model of laptop won't solve this because it'll be the same.

Are pre surface mount components better or worse quality than surface mount ones?
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 3 ай бұрын
Sort of. Through-hole can be more robust because it's less vulnerable to thermal cycles (legs can expand/contract), but for the components that matter like capacitors, through-hole caps aren't exactly reliable either. It's a moot point in modern computer design because you _have_ to use surface mount to get the ESR down. Capacitors with long through-hole legs just aren't fast enough for modern circuits.

Normally, when you observe that each component in a device is not identified with alphanumeric characters using indelible ink (commonly white); That is to say, such a device lacks silkscreen printing on each PCB that makes it up, so for that device you will not find the service manual (schematic diagram) either. The majority of recognized manufacturers whose authentic models meet this requirement will be able to enter (be accepted by Quality Control agencies) the demanding North American market (USA and Canada mainly). Another way to say it: I see the PCB silk-screened so I'm likely to find the service manual. NOT screen printed? well... Greetings.

From SFC scans and repairs, to pouring over Event Viewer and removing software, to scouring windbg for hours reading several dumps. Im at a loss. I have no idea what is causing my crashes. I have tried some other boards with no help. Grasping at straws but if there's any suggestions of anything please help me out. I'll try anything before giving the PC a fresh windows install.
