Fans-out was hilarious...I kept expecting it to stop, but it kept getting louder! Laughed. Great video, thank you, very useful.

If you've ever heard of "limp home mode" in a car, this is like that - because part of the circuit isn't working, it sets all existing fans to full speed.

Not as loud as I expected. Seems similar to the G10 DL380 - I'm about to start running a G7 DL360 here - dual supplies, unfortuantely for volume, but fortunately for redundancy. As little hardware as I'm running, I might only run one (maybe pull it and put in a baffle) to save a little eletricity. My electric bill isn't too bad though, and it looks like I can probably run it for 5 or 6 bucks a month here in the SE US. Not too bad!

I'm about to get one of these DL380 G8s with some E5-2680 V2s. I also have a DL360 Generation 7 I can't even hear it operate at all; dead silent. Runs proxmox. Not super energy efficient but about to be replaced.

do not worry!! If you don't install a GPU, it's a pretty quiet machine. But when the GPU is plugged in, you can hear fan noise from all over the house.

do you know if the g7 works with 63XX opterons? its not officially supported but just wondering if anyone has tried it

I can barely hear this thing run until its in fault mode. looking at getting a g8 of the same server line and the videos on that seem to make it a lot louder

my 360 g8 is louder than my 360 g7. it has lower wattage though (L5630 vs E5-2403) and is located in my basement

These enterprise class systems tend to be far more durable and reliable than home PCs - if it boots without throwing weird errors, there's a very good chance that everything is working. I'd try to make sure it boots with at least one disk attached, so you can confirm that CPU, RAM and RAID controller all work, as well as at least a large portion of the motherboard. Many of these of on-board diagnostics - on the Gen 10s there is a decent section for it - not sure if that's true for G7, but on boot time, even if it completes, it should report if some RAM is bad, or possibly if it is installed an a non-optimal way (there are preferred ways to install RAM to get the best speed, depending on the CPU and motherboard architecture - kind of like dual channel RAM likes to be in pairs - in this case it may be best at 3 or 4 sticks at a time, but it will run fine, just not as quick as a matched set properly balanced between channels). So boot it up, be patient and watch the POST screen for anything unexpected (for example, you might see a keyboard error if a keyboard is not plugged in or a USB port is bad, a RAM error as above, complaints about mismatched CPUs (though you will most likely see this in iLO and see the server immediately shut back down after it checks - again, used to this in G10, G7 may simply not boot, but checking through the iLO, using the console also allows you to check the iLO and see basic health checks of many components, even things like a RAID controller cache backup battery is bad, which won't crash the machine but will disable RAID caching which hurts speed considerably). Not all machines have iLO (or IDRAC in the case of Dells), but if it's there and you can check it, all the better for you.

HP ProLiant DL380 Generation 8 22 dBA to 28 dBA noise according to HP. Not that bad, but is it too loud to have in a living room?

At this point after sitting in a small room with a DL160 G6 starting up I think I've gone deaf and stopped caring with my cisco router running all the time too.. lol

How did you do this when 1 fan does not working its ok ?
@bluntlab6 жыл бұрын
I pulled the fan out to put it into a fault mode to show how loud it gets. In normal operation you need all the fans (unless you only have 1 CPU in which case you can leave out 2 fans I belive)
