Was just about to bin our 5520 for the same black ink issue and thought I would just try youtube for any support and found your video. Thanks for taking the time to create this video to show your stages for solution and also showing your perseverance to resolve the problem when it didn't work first time. Without youtube and people like you, my 5520 would have been in the bin. Many thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to compliment the video. I hate throwing stuff away that can be fixed. Never tried this before, but we gave it a shot and it worked after a few attempts. I’m not a big ink jet fan, I feel as though the stuff just evaporates and it’s like buying gold to replace the ink! But it’s the one printer I had and I needed it to work. Still printing fine to this day. Thanks for watching!

Brilliant instructions. Managed to get my printer back to working order with your help. Thank you. One small tip to add, when you take the ink cartridge cradle out use dental floss thin brushes to clean in between the gap where the ink drips down and the ink nozzle. Did not submerge the whole ink cartridge cradle in water but "scooped" warm water continuously through the small gab and huge chucks of ink kept on coming out therefore unclogging the dried ink along with the dental floss brushes. Took me an hour to dismantle, clean the cartridge cradle and reassemble and to get it back up an running. Thank you very much Jarrod.

Thank your Marcus for watching and Im so glad it worked for you! The submerging of the ink cartridge head was a last resort for me, I played nice at first but it did nothing but resist!! It still behaves to this day after it’s been “reborn”! Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment!

I so appreciate that you went through 7 hours of work just so that I could fix my printer! Thank you so much for filming this and sharing with all of us. I have had this printer for 7 years. It worked so beautifully when I first got it but it was left in storage for a very long time. When I got it back (3 years ago) it was doing this. I used my husbands printer for what I needed and ended up setting this one in the garage for 3 years. I badly need a printer for my business now and really wanted to fix this one. I can’t tell you how much I truly appreciate this video. THANK YOU!

lol.. no where near 7 hour to fix!! LOL.. but i get guy talk...i was trying so hard to see which way to move the tabs as i have small chick fingers and not strong at all. but i figured it out, next time show directions of push or mention it, when you dont have strength on your side it can be cumbersome, so i got it apart and put back together, runs good only now it keeps reading clear carriage jam?? not thing is jamed? scanns good but wont print its in error because of the carriage jam thank you

A much simplified variation of this idea worked perfectly for us. We used a thick plastic straw just large enuff to stick the end of your pinkie in. Straw fits well in the printer head socket. Didn't have to take anything apart except remove the black ink cartridge. Then, grabbed a cheap plastic squeeze ball ear wax cleaner from medicine cabinet. It fits nicely over upper end of straw & forms a seal. Sucked some plain old tap water into the squeeze ball. (Maybe 1/4 full) Put it in the upper end of the straw making sure everything was straight up & down for good seal. Gave the squeeze ball a few good firm squeezes while applying gentle downward pressure on the straw. (make sure you have a good thick doubled up paper towel under the print head). Large globe of black inky water got all over the center of the paper towel. AHA ! Then, carefully dried up the water we spilled in the upper straw placement area. Replaced ink cartridge. Plugged in printer. Let it run & adjust itself. Then hit 'print'. Ran the same paper thru 2 or 3 times to get the ink back down into the flooded-out head. Wha-La ! Printer now prints perfectly. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the Common sense idea ! 5 stars ! Took around 15 minutes including clean-up.

Your video really helped me a lot,I turned on my old printer after 3 years, put new inks but wasn’t printing black so I used your video for help & now it’s working like a charm.Just to add some trick I soaked print head in warm water & then blowed air from top using bike pump which unclogged everything.

I had the same problem - no black printing - soaking the print head didn't help even though I thought I had cleared out the clotted ink and the water was clear but I still had a blockage, so I used a length of clear tube with about the same internal diameter to place over the circular gauze for the black ink at the back of the print head. I placed the print head in a dish of shallow water and carefully began to suck and blow on the tube to dislodge any blockage - the black ink that came out was amazing it took several goes but I could see that it cleared the print head. Success!! Everything is working as it should. Thanks so much for the tutorial it's saved me having to buy a new printer.

I was buying cheaper ink for another printer and it was clogging my print head. One day I’ll grab a laser printer! Thanks again for watching!

Watched the video and the first thing that came to mind is the forced priming seemed to be the key. Was able to clean the tar-like dried ink from the parking area pad with isopropyl 97% and some MrClean. Used paper towels saturated with alcohol between the carriage rails like you did to clean the heads which worked great. Finally, pushing ink in by blowing through the cartridge vent worked great to get the fresh ink back into the cartridge again. Not much pressure needed either. I used a pin to punch a hole and a soda straw to blow through the vent. Just a small bit of tape to keep the cartridge from drying out from the hole I made to finish up. Great work and quite entertaining too thanks!

Thank you John for watching! Well done to you! In my opinion they’re great printers with a small flaw. If maintained once every year or two, these printers will last quite some time. You gave a very nice write-up in your comment and that alone should be able to help a lot of people as well. Thank you again for taking the time to comment.

When all else fails, I love a good bit of destruction!! So I take it none of my “fixes” worked for you!! I wish I had a video of every item that gave me hassle to the point of destruction. I had a brother printer that refused to fax. It got the “Fist of Freedom”! It did not make it fax, though it helped my building anger level off. My wife an I laugh about it when ever we feed paper for it to fax. “What did you do??” I ask her like she did it!

Your video really helped me. It is working again! It was messy and I had to use a lot of paper towels. I didn't take it apart, I just focused on unjamming the ink intake filter. Lucky for me I already had some 12 mm syringes and I used a drop of dishwashing soap to about a cup of lukewarm water. The paper towels were absolutely needed to mop up after injecting about three syringes full of water. I finally got much less black water back and thought I was done. I had to run about 12 test prints through and they were somewhat soggy, but at last I I got perfect prints again. What a savings this is. I've had this printer since about 2012 and never had any trouble with it before this. I hope I can make it last another 10 year. Ha! You did a great job on this video.

Very good video Sir - Well Done. I watched your follow-up video where you explained how you blasted air through the cartridge vent hole so I decided to try that technique first. I parked the heads, took the printer out to my car so I could use my 12volt air compressor. I stripped back the cartridge-sealing strip to uncover the blocked cartridge vent hole. I attached a very fine compressor nozzle that came with my unit (I think its intended to inflate soccer balls or similar). I pushed the nozzle into the vent hole and started the compressor. The read-out got up to 13 psi before I switched it off. I took the printer back inside, reconnected it to the power, conducted a head clean and test print - Everything was now working. All undertaken within 10 minutes including moving the car onto the drive. Bottom-line is that I think your theory is sound. Well done and thanks.

So I watched a few videos similar to this, but I simplified the process just a bit. Don't take the printer apart! Open the lid and get the cartridges in the middle, then unplug the machine. Take out all of the ink cartridges. Take a 1/2 sheet of paper towel-fold it and slip it under the bottom of the ink cartridge carrier (mostly under the black ink well). Get a small bowl of pretty warm water and a straw. Draw up a little water in the straw and place it over the black cartridge hole (opening) and blow pretty hard. I did this about 3 times and kept changing out my paper towel and making sure everything was completely dry. Plug the machine back in and try to copy something. If you don't have any luck-repeat the process. I eventually started to see ink and then I just kept printing and printing and printing. Pretty soon I had a perfectly printed page. Only took maybe 30 minutes or less. I was so proud of myself😍

Unbelievably! I finally got my printer back to work! So I dug out the ink-pad (from my trash) and cleaned it up and put it back. There are 2 things to consider: 1. There are 2 "ink pads" in the C309g, one is the one already mentioned below. Then there is a 2nd one, hidden under a metal plate. That one only come out mechanically before or after the printer has done some kind of job, especially cleaning. It is a small board with brushes, several small wiper blades that seem to align with the black and colored printer heads and one upward brush whose function is unknown. 2. You REALLY need to soak and clean the printer head very good. The first time I cleaned it, was not not good enough and it only lasted for one print. So I got pissed off and mixed up my own cleaning mixture. Prepare DIY Cleaning Mixture: - Hot water (not too much @ max 1:4) - lab grade iso-propyl alcohol (~97%) - few drops of dish detergent - streak-free window cleaner (~9% Ammonia). Cleaning Procedure: (a) Washed entire head in running hot water until no more ink would come out. (b) I took a syringe to repeatedly squirt my cleaning mix through the black ink intake and from print head side. (more ink came out - it never stops!) (c) Soaked the entire head in my cleaning mix for about 15 min, occasionally stirring it. Once the mix was not getting dirtier I took it out and rinsed one last time with iso-propyl alcohol + water only. (d) Shook out the remainder of water in the head and used soft tissues to draw out remaining liquid. (e) Cleaned the "wiper-blades" with cotton swabs sticks soaked in the cleaning mixture (f) Re-installed printer head and powered up. Last but not least. On this old printer, just keep the original HP ink cartridges, but do NOT buy new ones. Just drill a small hole in them on top and refill from other refillable HP compatible ink using a syringe. Put a small piece of tape over the hole once filled. Your ink levels will be falsely shown as empty but it will print just fine anyway. The reason is that: Ink levels as shown by HP products are false information and is just an estimate of what's left in the cartridge after having printed a certain percentage of black pages. There is NO electronics built in to actually measure the ink levels. Your $20 USD cartridges cost at most a few cents to produce and fill. It's a total rip off that should warrant a class-action law-suit! Printer now works and have been printing perfectly for a week! Thanks @Jarrod Fothergill

Some great information here my friend! I really appreciate you taking the time to reply with all of that! That’s incredible. I remember when I got my printer back together, it was showing my ink levels all empty. I double and triple checked all the wiring to make sure I didn’t leave anything unplugged. Couldn’t find anything but it still prints off of these same cartridges today, so there was plenty of ink. $60 for all the colors! Anyways thanks again for watching and a huge thank you for writing all of that great info up for us!

I would've never thought to blow air into the vent on the cartridge to clear the print head... It's brilliant and it worked! I tried cleaning the heads with alcohol, wet q-tips, and a syringe full of water, all with absolutely zero success. Came across your video and blew some compressed air into the vent of the cartridge and boom, black ink! Still a few streaks but they appear to be clearing up each time I print. You helped me out BIG TIME!!! Thank you!

Jarrod, you are brilliant! I had seen a Russian video on how to take it apart, but yours was better. I watched another video describing how to clean it while still in the system, and I did that, but, like you, that wasn't enough. Your discovery of blowing into the vent while at the same time holding it in place on the cradle dislodged whatever it was! And, because of your warning, I didn't get ink all over the floor either. Print quality is not all the way back, but I find that if you let the thing sit for a while it will re-saturate. Thanks! I owe you one!

Paul Joseph Thank you sir. We learn so much from trial and error, or just by making mistakes. Thank you for watching my video and I’m thrilled it worked for you! My printer is still going strong today, in fact , a friend of mine gave me a HP6700 and there’s a label on it that says to keep the cartridges in place, and unit plugged in until the new cartridges are to be inserted. My guess is to keep everything sealed up so the ink won’t dry out in the print head. If the cartridges are removed, the head doesn’t return to its parked position and allows air to get to the bottom and top of the print head, which lets the ink dry and clog. The ink is trying to do as its intended...dry fast. When it goes to its parked position, it rests on the ink pad and stays wet. Anyways, thanks again for watching and glad you brought her back to life.

Andy Skinn These are all good points and thanks for watching! I think my issue was I opened the ink replacement door, took out the cartridges, and left the door open. This allowed air to the cartridge tray both top and bottom. With quick drying ink, it was guaranteed to dry and clog. Open the door and take the cartridges out ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE REPLACEMENTS IN YOUR HAND!! Don’t take them to the store like I did! Again, thanks for watching !

A friend of mine gave me an HP6700 that had sat unused for quite a while with the black ink empty, but the head was parked where it should be. I put in all new in and it printed just fine. Thanks Jarrod for your very logical and considered approach to your problem we had the same problem in our case all cartridges worked minus the black which appeared to be clogged. We ended up ditching the HP for a Canon Ink Jet which prints great it is the G2600. When I have some time I will try what you have done to see if I can free the clog from the HP printer which has been disconnected and is now lying idle on our carpet. I don't feel like throwing it in the trash can at this point but when I get a day free I will take it outside to work on it. Thanks on all the tips for disassembly. Regards Mike

Hi, I could follow the video until about 10:00 - I soaked the head several times, and it still does not print out black. I'm about to kick it like you did. But what was the final trick? You blew air through the cartridge and it spelt all over your carpets, but did not solve the problem. Then you combined some 2 stupid ideas of blowing through the cartdrige and finally everything works - I did not get that (sorry, I'm Austrian). Can you describe in more detail what you did? Did you remove the cartridge and blow down to the printhead without the cartidge? But you talk about blowing air into the top of the ink cartridge - did you open it up? Thanks...

The so called “stupid idea” lead me to the discovery of how to fix my machine. I blew through the cartridge and ink came out. I placed the cartridge back into the carriage and blew into the cartridge again, thereby forcing pressurized ink into the carriage and dislodging the ink blockage. Hope that helps you.

Pushing the ink through the print head was all that worked for me. Thanks again for watching!

Your guess is correct! The docking tray is not hidden or locked. It's above your puddle. You expose it by turning the black wheel on the left hand side counter clockwise. Once the tray is exposed you'll see the sponges that keeps the printheads moist. This tray moves in and out every time you open the top to expose the ink cartridges. Unfortunately, your little mishap is an omen of your future. The "black ink" issue is that the black ink sponge erodes over time and the printhead is not flush with the sponge so and the ink dries and clogs. Cleaning the printhead is a temporary fix. The problem is the sponge.

Same experience here, cleaning the print head seems to have been useless, first time I blowed it did nothing, so I blewed stronger and longer, and it spilled much ink inside the printer. I then had to clean with towels, and print a bunch of white pages, to remove all that. I suspect the problem is with the cartridge only, especially the black ones, that have a tendency to dry. A design mistake I would say...

@237130 7 жыл бұрын
LadyDarkness1976 Well it seems there’s no right answers to those questions!! Some people report that an overnight soak was good enough. That wasn’t the case with my print head. I tried alcohol, hot water soaking, and lastly, forcing air by mouth through the ink cartridge while it was locked into place in the print head. That forced the ink to flow through the print head and solved the problem. So removing the print head, then placing the black cartridge back into its slot and blowing into the cartridge vent, forcing the ink into the head, forced the ink to push through the head! Sorry to repeat myself, but I’m trying to make it as clear as possible!!Thank you very much for watching!

B R probably one of the thin ribbon cables has become unseated. These thin white flat cables if not carefully handled can become dislodged at either end or in extreme cases become cracked. More than likely its dislodged. I believe they’re held in by compression. There is one that runs from display to the circuit board on the left front on the inside of the printer. There are several ribbon cables attached to the circuit board. Make sure all of those are firmly seated as well. After that, I’m not sure what else to check for your display. Only a ribbon cable carry’s power and data to the display. If you lift the top lids of the printer as if you were taking out the ink, look to the left front and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Keep me posted.

My printer printed black text perfectly, then on the next page something went awry. Imagine pulling close a white Venetian blind over a black background until you see only the white. That happened on the next page. I ran the Clean Printhead function a couple of times. That didn't fix it. Thought it might be corruption in the printer buffer and left the printer off for an hour. Tried it again and still got no black print from it. So I left the printer plugged in, but a week has gone by without usage. I watched this video for a fix then thought I might just do a print test before applying Jarrod's advice. It printed black perfectly first time. In my case, I'm guessing that something in the process the printer goes through after a long period of disuse fixed the issue; something that is absent from the printhead cleaning function.

This was my Mother in laws printer, sat there for a while with the Black Ink not working, I knew I had a tough road ahead to get it working. Almost 12 hours later, countless dismantling and KZbin videos. Soaking, boiling water, alchohol, more soaking, boiling water, Krud Kutter! more water, more soaking, dismantling, not putting a ribbon wire back properly, dismantling again. Some of the Print tests showed some real promise, even some sentences in Black showing through, like a big tease. Then nothing.....absolutely nothing. Whiteness. No Black ink at all. Finally I take a straw and started blowing and blowing and blowing, adding more boiling water, cleaning out the "ink pad"........and finally. Nothing. No change, in fact it lead to me dealing with about an hour of "damage to Printhead" then Failed Printhead error........I finally got it working again, printing. And no change whatsoever. Its done. I tried, I really did, and I dont usually fail at these things. Good luck to everyone out there! I think this would have definitely worked had the printer not sat idle for so long. After soaking the printer head, putting the cartridge back in the head, and blowing into the vent on top of the cartridge -to force ink through the head, other than that I’m out of suggestions I’m afraid. Thanks for watching though.

I did all these steps and I might have fixed it, only now it says the ink cartridge head is jammed. It moves freely all the way left and right. Followed all steps to clear the jam but it still says it is jammed. I'm about to give up and buy a new printer.

Richard Napolitano Don’t give up yet!! Did you verify that the black plastic strip that runs from side to side is properly threaded between the three sensors on the back of the print head? This plastic strip tells the printer where the head is in relation to the paper. On the back of the head, there are three sensors, two sensors over one sensor. The thin black strip has to be threaded between those sensors. Check it out and let me know.

Jarrod Fothergill That was definitely the problem with the print head alignment. I was able to fix that. But now I have another problem. When I put it all back together, the LED display isn't working. The power button is lit up and glowing, but the display is off. I made sure the ribbon was plugged in. Not sure what's going on now.

Richard Napolitano have you taken a look at the ribbon cable for breaks? And have you made sure that both ends are firmly seated in the connectors? After that, I’m afraid I’m not sure what to look at for the screen.

Why didn't you just a suggestion that you can use a dropper to flush the ink out from top of printer head like I do with alcohol not water use a 70 to 90 percent ok hope this helps load it with non used paper but it should be wet on printheads it said though so be careful

Thanks for watching. I started with simple attempts, but these heads were very clogged. I tried alcohol, I tried soaking over night, and nothing seemed to work, so I had to go to extreme measures. I’m glad your easier method worked for you though! 😊

Jarrod Your KZbin was very helpful. I found a new way to clear the blockage. I used a Panasonic Oral Irrigator (water floss) to squirt water at the blockage - i use this for my teeth. The mistake i then made was to have the band that goes across too low down. Once I fixed that my printer became like new. I might switch to a laser printer next time but they are much bigger.

GASBAGSMike Thanks for watching! If I ever have to buy a printer again, I believe I’ll be going for the laser printer myself! Mine has been in storage, in the southern summer heat, in a cargo trailer all summer and I’m interested how it’s going to perform when I plug it in. It’s probably all caked up and will have to be a video made on its resurrection! Thanks again for watching!

Great Work! You are definitely on to something here! I have an 8 year old C309g (essentially the same HP crap as yours) which just started to act up. No black printing. I then did "everything", including taking the whole damn thing apart. I then spent 2+ hours cleaning it! I then discovered the ink bath with a huge double sanitary pad absorber! There is also a little pipe/tube there where I have no idea where it goes or come from. The whole covered compartment was totally gooey'd up with my fucking expensive black ink. Now I know where the hell it went all these years, wasted in the bottom and back of the printer! So I tried to clean it up as much as possible, thinking that this goo may keep clogging up the printer heads. I then put it all together. Hitting "printer status report" it printed beautifully!! 1 page... then I decided to print another...and go fuck HP, it printed half the page and now nothing again! I then realized that I had taken out and thrown that "wet" pad (which was gooey'd up), that probably is supposed to keep the head wet when not in use... I will try to replace this sponge with something else. I just found a similar experience by "Mark" on this site: ethanbeute.com/the-story-our-hp-printer-stopped-printing-black-ink/

Running Late Thanks for watching! I believe that pad is a necessary evil! Keeps the head from drying out! Mine was like yours and piled with ink! I’d like to know how the two clear hoses work. Anyways, thanks again for watching!

I could only see one hose, going to the back of the printer in the other hidden compartment, where there is also some kind of brush sticking out. The measures of the sponge are: Length: 1 in Witdth: 1/4 in Height: 5 mm.

Your HP printer has print heads separate from the ink cartridges. My HP printer (C4795) has the print head built-in to the ink cartridges. Both types are problematic.

Problematic to say the least. I recently gave up the ghost on the HP and went with a Canon Laser printer with toner. Never going back to ink! Thanks for watching.

Tried to do this but when i went to put everything back together... the printer gives us a "jam" error. Basically the cartridge carrier now doesnt lower down into the slot and just violently slams against the right side of the printer... Went to fix one thing and totally destroyed the printer now :/ we are not sure whats going on as we have dismantled it and put it back together several times to make sure everything was correct :((((

michela marano Hi Michela. First, thanks for watching! The print head/cartridge holder will slam back and forth if the the thin black ribbon cable that runs side to side is not properly threaded between the sensors. This will cause the processor to not know the location of the print head and will slam it side to side. On the back of the print head, there are three small black sensors. I believe theres one on top and two below it. This black ribbon needs to be threaded through those three sensors. Again, if not, the processor won't know where the head is in relation to the paper and will slam it back and forth. It happened to me a few times too!

michela marano This printer is a pain in the a$&!! Behind the label in the top of the ink cartridge is a vent. It looks like a tiny groove under the label. With the ink cartridge in the print head (print head removed from printer) I had to put the ink cartridge up to my lips and blow into the vent on the top of the cartridge. I had to force air into it like I was breathing life into it!! But it forced the blockage out of the print head. Have some newspapers around as black ink may come dribbling out if your lucky! That means it has worked! Good luck and give it hell!!

Pablo Bernal As I stated in the video, all the overnight soaking I did had no effect. I had to put the black in cartridge into the print head and blow into the vent which is located under the label on top of the ink cartridge. This forced air into the cartridge, which forced ink through the cartridge and into the print head. Have paper towels nearby!! My printer works beautifully now. Hope that helps you!
