Print Head Clogs What to do!
Oh no! My printer has a clog.
Burt I print on it religiously....when I remember!
Well, we are all guilty of this including me but not often!
The longest I will go is one week and that occurs maybe once a year.
I have over 20 printers and seem to be able to keep them unclogged regardless of Brand, Model or whether I use OEM inks and carts or refillables with good third party inks.
So here is a bit of a discussion on this fun subject.

So, it’s February 2024 and I have just taken my Epson WF 7610 out of storage where it’s been sitting unused for THREE YEARS. Amazingly it still printed (poorly) with black ink, but the CMY had all dried up. I changed the cartridges and it would print NOTHING but black. I tried everything I could find to remedy the situation and nothing worked. Until I found your video today. Amazing, just amazing, that Windex can save my printer. After only about an hour of soaking the heads with Windex we are back in business. Thanks again!

***** IT WORKS!!!!!!!! Jose gave us all the tools of knowledge on how a printer's inkjet works and what the common issues are and how to fix it yourself when possible! And I appreciate you teaching us! My 10yr old son and I were able to use the Windex method and within 30min or so we had it back to printing like brand new again!!! Woo-hoooooo!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Jose!!! Ok I fully realize this video is at least 4yrs old but still VERY relevant to what I am dealing with right now. I am just now going through the first least invasive step of wetting the paper towel with windex and letting it sit. Crossing my fingers this works! I am SO bummed that my black ink has virtually stopped working, pretty much a light grey at this point. It is a new printer I bought a few months ago too! I was using daily until this pandemic struck our planet and I all but stopped using my printer for a whole week and now it's apparently clogged! So irritating, but I am grateful for your video and hopefully I will be back in business soon!! Hope you are doing well and anyone reading this during this pandemic is healthy and safe. *** I will report back how this works so that other's know who are dealing with a similar issue as me.

Wow, amazing help! I had not used my Epson C88 for a least 1 year and it was completely clogged on all the color channels. When I ran a nozzle check sheet it was completely blank. I then patiently used Jose's procedure with the Windex paper towel strips (about 7 times) until hardly no ink was showing up on the strips. When I first started the black ink was prevalent and then as I progressed splotches of cyan, magenta, and yellow started to show up on the strips, so I knew the nozzles were starting to unclog. I periodically ran some nozzle checks and noticed the colors were gradually starting to show up on the paper. I then ran a few clean head cycles and "bam" everything was hitting on all the color channels. I printed some color articles and I'm amazed how this printer came back to life like a new inkjet printer. Thanks again for your help!

This channel has rescued my P800. It took four days to recover from months of zero use, including total blockage on four of 8 channels.I have used a whole bottle of window cleaner, lots of paper towel and lots of ink BUT I now have a perfect nozzle check pattern and have successfully made a print. I will now start watching the videos on how to improve my printing!

Thank you Richard I've gotten great reviews and I've gotten rotten reviews on this video I'm glad you appreciated it. Everything I do is detailed and concise and probably information overload but I prefer to do that to prevent you the viewer from having any questions after watching a video. I've been accused of being too long-winded and not getting to the point. But I do think short attention span syndrome is running rampant this day and age.

I am an abuser of printers. 🙁 I have an Epson WF-645 that goes many months at a time without use. I have several set of cartridges that are many years old. They are kind of working. But I seem to have to do head cleanings and nozzle checks every time I use them. Would they be too old? The yellow isn’t putting out anything at all. I will take your advice and print something every few days, once I get the heads working again. Thanks so much for the video!

I tried this method for my Epson 645 and it made it print again. I so appreciated the passive method as I was worried about attempting the more invasive syringe method. I also appreciated your honest comment about it being my own fault :-). I'll remember to use it more regularly in the future. Thanks Jose!

Your tips helped me, thank you. I just wanted to add that for moderate blockage, what just worked for me is instead of doing the whole syringe procedure, I removed the ink cartridges and cleaned them from the top with Windex on cotton swabs. It was quick and the Epson is back to perfect prints.

This video was such a big help. I bought a late model open box Epson from a computer store that had obviously been used because the ink cartridges were already in it and there was paper in it. I didn't think about clogged print heads from sitting, which based on the dustiness had been awhile. I was able to get the magenta, cyan, and yellow to work but nothing at all would come out of the black. Didn't even take a whole day for the black to start discharging onto the paper towel. And bonus the magenta, cyan, and yellow have really discharged onto the paper towel as well. Videos like this is what makes KZbin so great. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I was so upset and frustrated because this printer has been nothing but a hassle to get set up properly and I thought I had wasted my time and money for nothing.

Jose, Thank you so much for this video and others you have made. I watched several videos over and over. I used your advice to try to restart an Epson R3000 that had not been used since we moved three years ago. I just kept at it with the paper towel process and printing full test pages and nozzle checks, then letting the printer sit over night. It took over a week and a couple ink cartridge changes but my R3000 is back running beautifully. I installed Inkjet Plumber so I'm hoping I can minimize trouble going forward. Your videos gave me the confidence to spend the time on this old 3000. Very glad I did. Gracias!!!

Thanks Jose for the excellent instructions. Quickly- an unusual problem here. Had a thunderstorm a couple of nights ago, printer switched back on OK but printed random pattern, stripes and blocks all over the pages... Didn't respond to changing the PC settings, wifi, etc.., pc settings all OK.... Eventually, cleaning print heads & changing ink cartridges (desperation) accidentally jammed the ink cradle out of line - the printer restarted and after a lot of clunking and clancking settled back down.... Prints fine again.... so if you have a problem like that, after unplugging - try carefully !!!! moving the printer ink cradle by hand sideways a little, say 2 - 3 inches, plug it back in again . Cheers all.

It sucks trying to have a printer at home most people just don’t need to use it very much and let’s get real the last thing on anyone’s mind is “oh I better use my printer 2 times a week”. Really better off not having a printer that uses ink at home. One of the printers I have at my business uses this black toner that has that black powder so whatever that stuff is would be best at home because it won’t clog up.

My brother MFC J485 DW prints photos beautifully but it won't print text consistently. This started yesterday (my router/modem died at the same time). The print is very light and faded, or some lines are darker and blurry and some are much lighter. I bought a new black ink cartridge and that didn't correct anything. I do not want to start screwing around with the nozzles and print heads, etc. I'm glad I watched this, because it let me know that my printer is not broken but rather the black ink nozzle is probably clogged. But I am not inclined to take anything apart. I am not knowledgeable enough about all this to go down that road. I did not realize that printheads get clogged. So I am sitting here with a printer I cannot use. And now that I am working at home due to COVID-19, I need to print several things. So I am in a real pickle here. But at least you saved me from wasting money on a new printer that will probably eventually develop the same issue.

Great advice! Instead of printing every 60 hours, I might just consider throwing it into the trash, lol. Canon Pixma Pro 9500 Mark II. Nozzle streaks on CMY and they didn't go away even after cleaning the print head. Guess I'll give it another shot before I go 'office space' on it. Thanks for the insightful video.

Piezo flush I think is distilled water with alcohol and amonia. I think it is made of 10 parts water to 3 parts alcohol and 1.5 part amonia. This was one of the more awesome truth videos on printheads...Its one reason I like HP as you can remove and replace print heads in pairs. Odd thing is, I think I am experiencing one of the things you mention....I had let that machine sit, and now even with new head the nozzles are clogged, so likely some air OR maybe the line got a bit dried out? I hope not...But will be trying a couple of these methods before I get the funnel for ink and syringe out!!

Thanks. I had an amazing Brother MFC-J220 working without a single clog for about 7 years using CISS cheap bulk ink bottles (4x100ml for $15). I didn't need to worry about the printer being idle for weeks or months, it just kept doing self-cleaning by itself. I noticed it many times being in the room that it suddenly starts making noise for several minutes without printing anything. It doesn't have a small chip onto the ink cartridges so it accepts any ink. Sadly, it got fried by a continuous electric jolt (410v instead of 230v) and died. Few months ago I bought a Canon Maxify MB-2140 which causing me lots of pain as it keeps clogging the head using the same ink bottles used in last Brother printer. I removed the entire head and cleaned it and now it has clogged again. It seems that Brother print heads are less sensitive than Canon's. Also this Canon does not do self-cleaning cycles at all unlike Brother. My next printer will be Brother.

@@cheo1949 Thanks for the reply. Would you please (1) give me a link to an online store that sells a reasonably priced quality ink for my Canon and (2) although the genuine ink is pigment based (PGI-1400), what would you recommend for it: Dye or Pigment? because what I know is that Dye is universal meaning you can use Dye on Dye & Pigment based printers and not vice versa. And (3) what is the shelf life for inks. Thank you.

Thank you for this video! I have an Epson XP 15000 that doesn't release ink when printing. I can get the colors to come back with this technique and doing cleaning cycles and eventually the black but then the next day it's back to not printing. I use this printer often so I don't understand why I'm getting clogs.

Thanks for your video from some years ago. I have a problem with a recently purchased Epson R280 for which your help would be greatly appreciated. I purchased a new R280 recently through an EBAY vendor. I have two other R280s that I've been using over the years; therefore, I'm familiar with nozzle checks and head cleaning. Please forgive me if the questions I'm asking have been addressed by you in this video, or one of your other videos. It's hard to search the comments for keywords/phrases. The problem I'm having with this one is printing the wrong colors. Nozzle checks show full lines but with the wrong colors in some sections. The yellow section has some black lines and light cyan lines. The black section has some black lines at the top, but light cyan toward the bottom lines. The light magenta is mostly light cyan lines. When I do a head cleaning I temporarily get more correct colors in the correct sections, but with time the sections become corrupted with the wrong color. My belief is that the print head is bad, and some internet research shows that these print heads are prone to printhead "delamination", which lets the colors mixed in the printhead. My theory is that when I do a head cleaning it pulls lots of the mixed (corrupted) colors out of the printhead, allowing for the correct colors into the printhead, and a timely nozzle check will show mostly the correct colors with no missing lines. (temporarily) I am using reusable cartridges, which I have also been successfully using for some years on two other Epson R280s. Does my theory sound reasonable? Is there something I can try to correct this? If I'm on the right track, would you happen to have a link to where I can get a printhead for a reasonable price? I talked to Epson and they considered it an equipment failure, but since I purchased through a 3rd party (EBAY), they can't provide a direct warranty.

Dear Jose Rodriguez. First of all, I should to say how greatly I appreciate your videos. They help to understand and to avoid mistakes, when using printing machine. Recently, as my printer gives me bad print, I used the method shown here. Having no result by another cause, I, nevertheless, must clarify: before moving the print head over soaked strip of paper towel, needed to remove cartridges from the print head or not. I moved them together and now doubt it is right. Please respond.

I think many times the problem on the Epson printers when stops printing a color completely is either person forgot to remove the tape over the vent hole, the vent hole has some glue debris stuck in it, or the cartridges themselves become air bound. I have gotten cartridges going again by sticking a pin in the vent hole and also pushing the bottom valve open to let the air out.

Jose I have an Epson 7710 that I have been using for sublimation. I had no problem until it was time to refill the cartridge. Oh my, nothing but problems since. I refilled the cartridges using a syringe/needle. When reinserted the printer would not recognize the cartridges. It finally let me get past the "not genuine ink" message. I did several head cleaning & nozzle checks with terrible results. I printed a purge file still no good. I let it sit 24 + hours & tried all again. Still not good. Finally, I put the original cartridges in & printed a purge file. It printed perfectly. I took the cartridges out & put my sublimation cartridges in & it accepted them. I did multiple purge files to get rid of any regular ink. I could then begin sublimating again. THEN I ran low on ink again. So I thought I would outsmart the printer & would fill the cartridges without removing them from the printer. I filled the cartridges with a needle while they were installed (printer turned off). Well I don't know what I have done because now my magenta does not print at all. Cyan is a pale blue, black is a dark gray & yellow is a medium yellow color. I see other people sublimate with the Epson 7710 with no problems. I hope that you can give me suggestions. Thank you for all of your great videos!

I have no clue what you might be doing wrong. I assume you arebueing refillable carts which need to be pre primed in order for ink to flow properly. Secondly sublimation printed on sublimation transfer paper will NEVER look like regular photo inks on photo paper so ALL colors will print grayish and will look much duller. Only after you heat transfer will you see the brighter colors.

Thank you so much !! Service center people sent a code for HARD cleaning cycle to clean Y, when it didn't, they said "sorry, the printhead needs to be changed. I am glad that I was able to unclog the yellow colour in my brother DCP-T300 ink tank printer with the process you have mentioned in this video. . Now, the problems I am facing with yellow and magenta is, one day will get all the nozzles unclogged by either the amonia + paper towel process or by running cleaning cycles, then in 1 or 2 days suddenly one or both the colours will start disappearing on the prints suddenly, even after 1000-1500 prints. This happened 5-6 times. in that situation the dotted lines of respective color will come less than half or so in test print. There is paper dust in most area inside printer including below printhead, if any best way to clean, kindly let me know. I read somewhere that the inks must be consumed within 6 months of pouring in the tanks and the printer must not be unpluged and only the printer's on/off switch should be used to switch the printer ON or OFF. I am following this. It will be great help if you can tell the possible causes and solutions for the above problem. Thank you once again.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with these tank type printers it has to be something in the ink delivery preventing the tanks from feeding into the printhead dampers consistently something is going on and unfortunately I cannot help you with that so I really don't know how these printers work.
