HP X360 14 Hinge Repair, or more accurately ghetto hinge mount repair

This is the cheap or to method of fixing damaged hinge mounting points on a laptop
Since they have been getting made thinner, cheaper, this is an extremely common issue i see with laptops these days.
Yes its not pretty but its damn cheap to do and is unlikely to ever have the same issue again!

could i get away with only riveting the two side holes and not the middle? looks a little less ghetto lol. gonna use some wide flange rivets so they can be centered properly too

Necessity is the mother of invention. I have done this with small bolts, with nuts, & washer on outside of case for support, but this is ingenious. I will try this next time. Tell me, did you consider grinding off the rivets?

haha true i have needed to grind off the rivets to redo them, a simple drill out of them is fine, push metal out, redo

@@bloodybones63 I don't think you can because the he already cut off the stems as close to those locking rings that you see on the outside as he could. Those are what hold the pin and clasping top flange tight on the inside. They are designed to use the whole lock ring to maintain tightness on the pin.

@@shillpolice7981 I wasn't suggesting grind them level. They could be rather sharp if left this way. I would grind about one third of the height off, then, fill with gray caulk, smooth over.

why not rivet from the outside? The rivet on the tool side is nice and wide and flat. The inside could be flattened with a punch n small hammer - even a small tin plate sheet

fitment the slightly rounded top on the inside , will usually still have the lcd and lcd trim go on neat over it

NICE JOB -. The HP 360 is a real engineered POS.. I'm wondering if you could etch the back on the hinge and the inside of the screen cover and JBWeld it into place? STILL the ISSUE REMAINS that this hinge is TOO STIFF and thus torquing the mounting point when opening and closing.. THERE SHOULD BE A WARNING ON THIS MODEL "ONLY HANDLE SCREEN FROM TOP CENTER AREA WHEN OPENING AND CLOSING"... So I am also wondering how to loosen the hinges up either mechanically or by applying an oil or something..? Nice repair tho. Looks like you caught that one in time. I thought my daughter was just abusing her's when the bottom left digitizer tab first popped out but then the whole hinge detached from the back cover just the same and the digitizer broke badly. Screen still works. But I dont think you can get just the digitizer front plastic on this LCD. Any thoughs appreciated. Nice vid and LIKE.. - I'm just thinking a good epoxy like JB weld would hold if both sides were really clean, degreased and etched prior to application. And if I could get some of that torsion out of the hinge movement..

hi, i dont have any suggestions for lubrication of the hinges sorry. i find failurs with the hinges or mounting points on these style of laptops to be very common and usually it doesnt matter how the laptop has been treated

@@rickstechrepairs thx for reply. I DID MANAGE TO GET A 2 part epoxy to bit between the metal hinge and the plastic cover. It’s not thoroughly tested yet but looks real promising. 1. I etched both the plastic lid and the metal hinge plate with brake cleaner being real careful not to get anywhere but intended. 2. I sanded both sides of the hinge as well as the plastic cover connection point with a 150grit just a light but thorough touch. 3. Then I sprayed it all with brake cleaner again. 4. I custom cut 2 small blocks of hard wood no longer than he hinge, in order to use a clamp disbursing pressure evenly while drying. The wood was about 1/2 x 3/4 x 1.5” 5. I mixed the 2 part epoxy a hair stronger on the hardener component and covered the inside metal hinge plate and pushed them in place slowly locking it down with c clamp. 6. Note I did cover the wood block contacting the epoxy with alum foil to prevent sticking. 7. I don’t know the particular epoxy I used but I can go look if anyone is interested. It was a full set in 30mins rated and full cure in 24 hrs. 8. I DID Make sure to walk away once clamped and did not even look at it for 24 hrs. I had the clamp locked down pretty tight. 9. I suspect the two reasons epoxy attempts fail is preparation. The cleaning and etching. Cleaning critical but the tech of high value in epoxy application too. Unfortunately the screen finished off on this HP x360-M14 series. The digitizer was blasted before I took the screen unit out. But I don’t think they sell that digitizer by itself and for good reason it does not separate well at all on that unit

What about the epoxy glue? Would it be strong enough to stick together? The rivets are a good idea. However, the laptop would not be convertible to a table anymore and it looks like a 'ghetto' laptop :p.

Brilliant....these hinges where a poor design implementation by HP....would there be enough space for root nuts or nutserts, and be able to re use the screws...I have a similar model with both hinges detached...will now have the inspiration to have a go, thanks Rick.

without the ghetto mod, you run the risk of cracking and damaging your LCD/Touchpanel
