It’s a shame HP has such a flashy looking laptop (the 360 part looks the coolest in my opinion) and the laptop starts breaking down in only a few months to a year

Yes, yesterday i just had exactly same issue as you described. No drop, nothing. In fact i was very careful with handling of this fragile HP laptop like a baby. Now the right hinge got a problem and it popped the screen out. Terrible product defect from HP.

WARNING: Some displays are held together with two vertical strips of easy peel tape. If you just try and pry the display apart you risk cracking the display. Dont ask how I know. You have to open it at the top a small amount then reach in with narrow nose pliers and pull the end of the tape carefully. I used metal filled epoxy to reglue the hinge.

Top video Chris, pesky things are laptop hinges. Either the hinge fails or the power input barrel jack on the laptops motherboard fails.

Thanks so much for this video... I have the same laptop with the same hinge issue, after a drop. Going to try the epoxy first, as it would take 6 weeks to get a new part... thanks again!
@Agret

You are correct that part number is for the top cover. Someone dropped their laptop and the left hinge separated from the top cover so I ordered a replacement. Took 3 weeks to arrive from China. To disassemble and get the screen + hinges off is about 1.5hrs and then taking all the parts off the old casing and putting into new and putting back onto laptop has taken me 3hrs. While putting on new casing hinges have bent slightly, webcam is no longer working and I separated the left side screws from casing again as it's damn near impossible to reattach these hinges. Major pain to work on this model. Take apart screen assembly again and stick double sided tape between the screws and the display casing then use strong tape over top to hold in place. Would give this laptop a 4/10 in ease of servicing as I have successfully replaced hinges on many laptops with zero issues.

We had same problem! Three weeks ago we went to get it repaired. It started like this and split more before we could find a repair shop. Great timing mid level 5 lockdown:( They repaired it but the screen had also gone with it. €175 repair . Then last week laptop started beeping, went dead,would not turn on. Now back with repairer but not looking good- motherboard / ram issue. Very disappointed given the cost. We are thinking of sending it back to HP.

I've been epoxying laptop hinges sockets back in for years, I think JB weld works best, but clear epoxy is good too. Some are either to flimsy or the case is cracked and requires replacing. also you have to find the little screw sockets or have some from other laptops . Its not just HP many break, Toshiba, Dell, Acer, etc. Thanks for the video, my friends X360 did this so I wanted to check youtube before doing hers.

the screen is stuck down on both sides with vertical black adhesive strips, you can see the one on RHS at 4:48 you have to carefully peel back the 2 top corners and top horizontal, you have to reach inside each corner with tweezers and pull the white pull-tags on the adhesive strips, pull straight out and roll up as the adhesive tape comes off, if you dont remove the adhesive tape the screen will get cracked

Thankfully the screen is perfectly ok and the touch is working too. I've contacted HP they told me to wait for the part to come and they're not sure if they'll find the plastic back display enclosure separately. In case if you have any direct links to buy just the 'plastic back' cover please provide it to me. Thanks for the video.

Got the same problem here and even worse my screen started to crack on the left (bottom) corner. I have been using the HP Pavillion x360 since 2017. Now I am afraid to even close the laptop! I searched online for better options for convertible or detachable laptops, and it kinda frustrated me how many reviewers still recommend the x360 from HP. Maybe it works for them or maybe they haven't used it much? I love HP, but their x360 really needs much more improvement to make it stronger in the physical endurance.

Many modern laptops suffer from this =/ It's because they are trying to get thinner and lighter, and that's always going to result in a flimsey build that cannot tolerate any kind of drop.
@ruekurei88
@ruekurei88 2 жыл бұрын
"they haven't used it much? " They do not. They do reviews of laptops and never actually use those laptops outside of their review windows(either couple of days or couple of weeks), then back to their own laptop/desktop or whatever newer one they have. The problem with this hinge thing only rears it's head after months of use.

I'm having the same issue with my Medion erazer laptop only a year after getting it- always treated it perfectly as it was expensive. The right hinge creaked and suddenly the bottom right section of plastic is bubbling around my screen- I can't even shut it without causing huge pressure of my screen and I'm worried it'll break. Never repaired a laptop and I'm worried about transporting it to get repaired if I can't even close it :/ shame lots of laptops are having these issues nowadays.

Argh, had this happen myself with two laptops. Admittedly the second one was my fault as I left it precariously on the arm of the sofa and it fell off... With the other one though, I think the heat from the exhaust caused the plastic to weaken over time and the hinge just snapped. I would go for a metal cased one next time for sure, my wife has just bought an Honor laptop and it seems far sturdier.

If its the same model as this one - the screen is held into the lid with clips. You need to try and slide (carefully - and dont push too far in) a spudger and try and slide over the clips until you can pull one side out a little, work all around the edges slowily and it should eventually allow you to lift the screen out. Dont forget the screen is attached with a ribbon at the bottom (easy to damage).

I have one of those and the lid cracked near the hinge. It was from being overstressed opening and closing. It is under-designed for the job. HP refused to repair it saying that case breaks are excluded from the warranty. Then they quoted $500 to repair the lid. I guess they wanted to use a complete new screen and lid assembly. This was very annoying to say the least as a new machine was only another about $200. I resolved the problem by buying a tight fitting plastic case. I superglued the case over the lid. That completely took up the strain of opening the lid. The case was about $20. I still take great care opening the lid and no longer use it as a tablet which was half the reason I bought this version of a PC. Won't be buying another HP for sure. Disgusted with welshing on the warranty (it was obviously not dropped) and gouging for repairs, and a poor design not up to the task it is advertised to do.

@@GadgetUK164 Thanks so much for getting back to me! Do you think, then, that the one I have will work? Again, it's JB Weld, and it's two parts: one tube says "Steel" and the other says "Hardener". When mixed, the color is a greyish color, but I know the other kind, the resin-reinforced, blends the yellowish hue like you said. I just want to make sure I used what you did because I don't like to stray from a "prescription" that seems so particular. Or do you think either one would work the same or maybe that the steel-reinforced could even be BETTER? Again-- though I haven't opened it up yet-- I believe my laptop's got the same exact problem as this one. Sorry for any bother; it's just that your video gave me hope! :) I enjoyed an "any-fault" insurance on my laptop (I'm clumsy), but I unfortunately hadn't realized it was only good for two years, and my hinge problem happened just after the expiration. So I was searching for anything that could possibly keep me from feeling like I needed to replace it (especially since this wasn't even my fault this time...) And I'm just asking about the epoxy type because, unfortunately, my inquiry seems to be too specific to be able to get any valid response... I tend to keep finding answers that I'm not actually looking for. So it's great to hear from you. Thanks again!

@@414khaos2 Hello friend, if you're still around and looking at these comments, I'll tell you how it goes. I'm off from work, so I'm about to finally give it some time today. I have a feeling it may not particularly matter whether it's resin-based or steel-based. I looked at the common uses for it, and it seems to be safe to use in this sort of situation. It might even be better and stronger. But I'll try to give you the heads-up after. I'm going in!

My HP Envy x360 which is 17 months old, just started to have the Notorious Right Hinge Beast come out. It has been used primarily as a desktop unit , acquired in a panic during the Chinese COVID invasion forcing work at Home .... So, today, looking to close the Laptop after using it this morning, the right corner of the screen is separating form the Body. I said ......WTF is this !!! . I just placed scotch tape all along the both sides of the corner. COMMON HP< YOU CAN DO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS !!!! Of course, the Warranty is over since January 2021. That leads me to another major Gripe . The 1 Year Warranty is a total farce. Since I purchased mine form Micro Computers in Mid March , but the PC was produced in January , HP Rep said the Warranty is from the Production date for 1 year !!!, not the Sale date. Another WTF !!!. I'll look to Acer, Dell, or others instead of HP. Again, I'm Not doing what is described here.... Let the scotch tape rule !!

never been a big fan of laptop hinges especially those more fruity designs can't see their being any long term reliability with those hinges. Big screens flimsy plastic are a recipe for disaster. I've always been impressed with nintendo hinges on their ds line cant be that hard to make a decent hinge at a decent price. My new asus has a cool feature called ergo hinge where the screen sits a bit proud when open giving a tilt when sat on a desk of about 10-20 degrees makes typing and coding very pleasant. Also aid with cooling and sound reproduction with its down firing speakers. great video glad to hear thing are on the up mate.

It sounds like one of the hinges has twisted =/ It's hard to know what to suggest when they go like that! I would try and lift up the screen a little bit, and squeeze my fingers into where the hinge is located and squeeze between that point and the back lid of the screen, whilst trying to open it. That may allow you to open it. But the screen could break!

Common issue with all laptop mfgs. Poor design I think. The screw for the hinges are too tight and puts strain on the brass anchor and plastic. In the end the plastic breaks apart. So loosening that screw also helps.

I would advise not buying HP at all... I have a HP Envy x360 and the hinges broke... twice. I am considering trying to fix it myself since it is no longer under warranty but I know damn well I might break the screen in the process :( If it is valuable info to anyone, the L/R hinges kit costs €110 with shipping. I hope I will be able to keep the hinges caps intact otherwise, it's an extra €80.

This is why you should just buy a Mac. It lasts longer, and the only thing that can go wrong is what you break, not the product randomly breaking down.

I think the problem is modern devices get smaller and slimmer etc, and they ultimately become more fragile =/ They should be doing more "drop and knock tests" to make sure they are robust enough for real world use though!
