I was so fortunate to have seen over 80 GP live, during the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's. I'm Canadian and my very first race my dad took me to was the Detroit GP in 1982. I wanted to see Gilles so bad. He died shortly before my first race. My very first experience of shock as a young man.

Have I got some stories, and a pair of Jean Alesi's gloves.

@@chrisccc22 Same here when I heard the news over the radio (Eugene, Oregon). I wasn't sad. Instead I was very angry in life and at the world because Villeneuve & Jones helped me cope in my young miserable (home) life - and by 1982 - they were both gone from the circuit. If it wasn't for Ricardo Patrese's wild win at Monaco & Gordon Johncock's incredible victory in the Indianapolis 500, I might have given up on motorsports - but those two events kept me addicted to it... Anyways... I too was hoping to see Villeneuve someday, somewhere, somehow. Because he was notorious to the competition with his unbelievable starts: As Alan Jones put it during an interview shortly after winning the Austrian GP 1979: _"I was expecting something yellow (a Renault) to come by me at the start,"_ Jones said, _"but not something red! I knew it had to be Gilles, but even so I just thought, _*_'Where the hell did he come from?"_*

Amazing that the Ferrari 312 T3 was so competitive at this track, second win there in two years, despite it being the 'Old' model in 1979. 👍🏻

In that era, drivers mattered. The T3 was behind in technology, but reliable.

The T3 in this race was not the same car that raced in 1978. It was raced in the first 2 races of the 1979 season for reliability reasons. Part of the modifications were side pod skirts to keep the air under the car to create more downforce. It was good enough to win this race but the 2 south American races showed it was just not good enough for 1979.

On the difficult Brands Hatch track, Niki Lauda did wonders; he would have won in 1974 (without a puncture), he won in 1976, he would have won in 1978 (without a mistake by Giacomelli), he won in 1982 and 1984. It was just a track made for him!

Funny thing is that I get the impression he didn’t particularly like Brands Hatch. He mentions Clearways (Clark bend) as one of the most difficult corners in his book and it’s a place where he had a pretty bad crash in his F3 days. But it gives you a pretty good idea of his mindset that it never seemed to bother him and he just got on with the job.

I used to go to Brands a lot in the 70's and 80's. Got to see James Hunt racing round there once. Used to go to the club meetings a lot and saw Derek Bell in his yellow Ford Escort before he became a Le Mans legend. It is a shame it cannot be used for F1 these days or even WEC

Murray Walker had perfect prononciation of "Québec" (where Gilles Villeneuve was from). In this video he actually paused for a mili second just to make sure he had it right, and indeed he had. A true professional!

Amazes me that one team could run without a front wing yet others clearly disagreed and yet the cars are so closely competitive

LOL The major complaint in F1 today is driver can't follow close enough. Adding gimmicks like DRS, KERS, ERS, to make them able to pass. It's almost like they have gone backwards when racing quality is concerned.
@thearsenalmisfit2414
@thearsenalmisfit2414 2 ай бұрын
In the ground effect era, the front wings were not used for down force as the venturi tunnels created more than enough down force. They were used to balance the car. Sometimes, the car was set up so well that the front wings were not needed. This, for the most part, was up to driver preference. So you often saw 1 car from a team with a front wing and the other without.
