ROGER DALTREY - SAY IT AIN'T SO JOE lyrics Say it ain't so, Joe please Say it ain't so That's not what I want to hear Joe and I've got a right to know Say it ain't so, Joe please Say it ain't so I'm sure they're telling us lies Joe please tell us it ain't so They told us that our hero has played his trump card He doesn't know how to go on We're clinging to his charm and determined smile But the good ole days are gone The army and the empire may be falling apart The money has gotten scarce One mans word held the country together But the truth is getting fierce Say it ain't so, Joe please Say it ain't so We pinned our hopes on you Joe and they're ruining our show (Guitar Solo) (Ooo Babies) Don't you think we're gonna get burned (Ooo Babies) Don't you think we're gonna to get turned We're gonna get burned We're gonna get learned Where going to get turned Where going to get burned Where going to get burned Ooo learn Turn Burned Ooo burned Yea..... Say it ain't so, Joe please Say it ain't so That's not what I want to hear Joe please tell us it ain't so Say it ain't so, Joe please Say it ain't so I'm sure there telling us lies Joe and I've got a right to know They told us that our are hero has played his trump card He doesn't know how to go on We're clinging to his charm and determined smile But the good ole days are gone The army and the empire may be falling apart The money had gotten scarce One mans word held the country together But the truth is getting fierce Say it ain't so, Joe please Say it ain't so That's not what I want to hear Joe and I've got a right to know Say it ain't so, Joe please Say it ain't so They keep on telling us lies Joe please tell us it ain't so Say Say it ain't so Say it ain't so Cause I've got a right to know

As the owner of all The Who's music, this is the version of this song I have. Most of their music in my collection is on reel to reel tape.

Is this the single version? The slide guitar sounds more prominent here. Great upload, btw!
@macafeez3 жыл бұрын
This is the album version. The freq range in hz for the slide guitar was under-boosted in the original, so yeah good catch, we boosted that range and the guitar popped out more.

@gildylan8703 American politics; about the fall of the Nixon administration, which to Murray Head (the original artist) symbolized the corruption and decline of America after the disaster in Viet Nam (and the general attacks on dissent and fomenting of coups overseas and everything else the left despised about Nixon). The song is from the point of view of Nixon's famed "silent majority", who were against the hippies and the "black riots" of the 1960s and clung to "law and order" as a way to hold on to (their idealized version of) the past. The title comes from the fable about how, when on trial for conspiring to lose the 1919 World Series (for a payoff from gamblers), disgraced baseball star Joe Jackson was confronted by a heartbroken child who asked "Say it ain't so, Joe!" . In the story, Jackson sadly replies "It is so", but of course in real life that cornball event never happened, Jackson was acquitted, and there''s a case to be made that Jackson didn't even know what his teammates were doing. But the American media were as free with the fibs 100 years ago as they are nowadays. Journalistic integrity may have been in vogue in the 1970s, but the powerful and the corrupt put a stop to that, too. I'm sure somebody could try to adapt this to criticism of Joe Biden…but the lyrics do also contain the verb "trump", so it could be used either way.. (I'm in the "a pox on both their houses!" school of thought myself. Even if US politics never got anywhere near as pro-human as things did in Europe, we are now so hopelessly controlled by the forces of oligarchy that 1975 looks like an unobtainable Utopia, too. So perhaps I'm part of the crowd crying that "the good old days are gone" and Murray Head would mock me, as well. But apparently the UK is far too busy cheering on the Nazis to bother with looking backwards, so…) I prefer Roger's vocal to Murray Head's but although Jimmy McCulloch is a guitar master, I think Bob Weston did a better job with the slide guitar on the original. (But Murray's marriage lasted until 1992, so I guess Weston had learned his lesson about sniffing around bandmates' wives. Whether Mick Fleetwood actually beat him up or not.)
