I wanted to lodge a complaint about my boss and the abuse she was doing towards me. I didn't stand a chance because the HR was her daughter in law. Not to mention, her son is also a manager within the company. Do your research and see what kind of relationship they have to the company. Beware of working for a mom & pop type business, especially if they hire their family. Number one with that is there will never be room for your growth.

A lifetime ago when I was 25, I had a supervisor that drank his lunch and then was unable to make a decision in the afternoon, leaving it up to me. I went to HR and let them know the supervisor had a drinking problem and needed help. I was told that now that it was known, maybe it would resolve itself. I quit a few months later. I heard that about a year later he was let go. That's when I realized that HR was there for the company not the employee. That was back when the US didn't really have any laws requiring HR to follow up on complaints.

It is sad that HR often prioritizes the company over the employee. Thank you for sharing this experience.

Previous job I had... company was bought out. The new HR was screwing up my benefits and I sent several emails trying to resolve it. My emails were either not answered, or were very short, non answers and the last was a "stop bothering me" one. So I emailed the owner. I had no idea that they were buddies. But the issue was resolved. I quit that job. The trouble came on my NEXT job... they had requested a reference from the previous employer and got a very weird email back. To which they contacted me and asked me about that job. They said that I had only worked there 5 months and some personal very unprofessional things (that they would not tell me) that raised a red flag to them. I got the job. But I had no idea that this was happening. I had applied for several jobs and now know why some of them never called me back. Current HR is giving me the runaround about changing my hours. My supervisor is okay with it, but HR is not. I don't know why that would be a 'liability' for the company. In Florida, employers pretty much cannot be sued so IDK why they bother with all that.

How true. Well stated Martin. HR is employed by the company & is not their to help or assist you in any manner. They are truly the enemy of the people.

Thank you for the reminders...your perspective is very valuable, especially for the younger folks just starting their careers. Sadly it seems in the corporate world it's all about the money. Come to think of it, pretty much the same in politics too (at least here in the States). I wish we could get the corporate (and billionaire) money out of politics and start a more equitable, publicly-financed campaign system. Sorry if that is off-topic. At any rate, I hope the First Nations carpenter you mentioned is doing OK now. Cheers and best of luck if you drive/deliver tomorrow!

I had a nightmare situation of working for the City. The particular dept I worked in was a nightmare. The supervisor had a history of assaults on his record including spending a yr in jail for vehicular assault. There was all kinds of bullying, cover ups, etc that resulted in two suicides. I learned that Human Resources was DEFINITELY not your friend.

Spot on!!! I'm an RN in Ontario which means I am in a union. I still dont feel safe. I believe there is a lot of ageism out there and older more experienced nurses are not as valued as they used to be. I wish I prioritized saving and investing at a younger age. I can't imagine you being able to work under those types of conditions - you're too good of a person and have a conscience. I, too, was shocked to find out how HR actually worked when I was dealing with a horrible work situation. Certainly true. I worked at a large company for decades. There was a manager that was constantly being reported to HR. He had substance abuse issues among other personality issues. Somehow the issue of the day was always blamed on someone else, the women accusers were all mentally ill, the men liars. Well over a hundred people were scapegoated and fired over the years. He got caught shooting nail gun at employees, fired the secretary; he turned over a backhoe, fired the mechanic; Harassment was always the victims fault. Post retirement I ran into some of the HR people, and they explained that once they had started protecting him they had to continue due to perceived legal liability. They moved him to another position in the company as soon as the complaints reached a certain threshold. Early on HR believed his stories, but for the last 20+ years they knew he was a problem.

Companies position HR as someone who can be there for employees when there is an issue. Such a farce. Interestingly enough, HR wasn't there when I got laid off on November 16th. My manager delivered the news. Further, they did not contact me after other than to send me a severance document to sign. Thank goodness for HR, LOL.

Spot on. A profession without descent core values. Sell their services to the biggest wallet. I call them Inhuman Resources. Maybe some began with good intent, but the tide is against them. They are to be used where they can cause no harm. Now they call themselves People managers. Wouldn't trust most with putting the trash out let alone sensitive employee matters.

HR departments work for companies, they are primarily support staff with limited decision-making power and may lack in-depth knowledge of critical business matters. In my opinion, it’s better to address key issues directly with the management. However I think much comes down to culture, for some organisation the best thing to do is probably to leave.

The name Human Resources should tell us all we need to know. Employees are a "resource" to be used up and discarded.

Could it be also dependent on the type of the company? I often hear that construction companies in Alberta are notorious for treating employees like dirt. Or most companies in Alberta for that matter. Interestingly, if you look at the list of top 100 “best employers to work for in Canada”, only one or two are from Alberta. There must be a reason for that.

It’s true, at least about my local union. We have the best contract in the US, but when it came down to it, they couldn’t do sh** against the property manager who was circumventing union rules to get rid of me. It’s all about money, and they didn’t want to take on a global property management company. You pay all these dues but then they are weak in the face of dubious management practices.

Now I didn’t complain or say anything but somebody from HR sent out an email saying oh we need to have mediation between these two because it’s becoming a hostile environment. What 😮 I agree HR is not there for employees ever and from my experience never on the right side either

Let me add this….don’t complain to HR if you’re a male. HR, operated by women, are more responsive to a woman’s complaints esp with any issue with a male worker. If you’re a guy, only interact with females atwork at the most superficial level, do not flirt, never ask a woman out, try not to be alone at all with a female coworker
