Stunningly, this work of Saint-Saens was never meant to be heard by the public. His composition, "Carnival of the Animals" (from which this piece has been extracted), was initially composed for a close circle of friends. Upon the death of the composer, the entirety of the work was posthumously published. Imagine life without the glorious cello work in 6/4 time, known as "The Swan". I've played this piece as a processional as various Brides have entered the Church on their special day. Sublime.
