I wonder if Gershwin would be surprised by how much his compositions are played in concert halls worldwide.

What a stunning performance! I first heard Gershwin's masterpiece more than 60 years ago, and this rendition brought back that first awe and wonder. Bravo!

Atemberaubend!

Summertime is an aria written by Gershwin for his folk opera Porgy and Bess. 0:07

The larger cultural setting for “Summertime,” however, is the interest in black music and art held by white artists and intellectuals during the 1920s and 1930s. [Shmoop]

Porgy and Bess is based upon the novel Porgy by DuBose Heyward. Published in 1925, the novel was first adapted for the stage in 1927 by the author's wife, Dorothy Heyward. The play, in turn, inspired George Gershwin's Porgy, which he called "an American folk opera." [WFMT]

Far far too slow, but when you've got a singer with a tone this luxurious and beautiful, you can't blame the conductor for wanting to languish a little.
@rloomis32 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're used to the Miles Davis version? This seems like a pretty standard tempo to me (for the original version).
@chrisfrenchnyc Жыл бұрын
@@rloomis3 Ummm… no. LOL. I’ve heard and seen this performed live many, many times. I think it’s safe to say that the Houston Grand Opera recording hems pretty close to the standard tempi. This Summertime is far too slow. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaGlmXZ_f96omrs
@rloomis3 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisfrenchnyc Agree to disagree. I got out my metronome and checked the tempos of the HGO and this performance. In between the "lingerings," it's about 66 vs. 52. Is that really a big enough difference to merit an accusation of "Far far too slow" for this one? Also, I found online a vocal score, copyright by the Gershwin Publishing Corporation, in which the tempo is marked as 96! By that reckoning, the HGO recording is also far off the mark. There is plenty of repertoire that has developed a performance tradition where the tempos are rather removed from the composers' original indications. Given that, it basically comes down to a matter of preference. If you say, "This performance is far, far too slow for my taste," I have no argument; but when you make a declarative statement that implies there is something technically "wrong" with the performance, I don't think you have much of a case - and, based on the source I mentioned, you would apparently need to apply that same criticism to the recording you cited as a reasonable reference.
