That transition coming out of the trio in the 3d movement (19:50) is masterful, snare drum sticks on the tympani, I wonder if Felix scored it that way. A great trio to start with, marked contrast to the very fast menuet. What the heck? The curiously abrupt transition to the coda kind of sucks, comes out of nowhere, switches keys, tempo, uses none of the prior ideas in the 4th movement. Felix was saying "man, i don't know how to end this thing, and I'm supposed to have it finished today. I want it to be major, I'll just fire up the trumpets and let them honk for 15 seconds". Wipes his 15-year-old hands together and smiles to himself.

Mendelssohn was an outstanding element of the Romantic period, having been one of its outstanding elements. The set of symphonies composed by him are works of extraordinary sensitivity and strength. This first symphony begins with a glowing Alegro, followed by a calmer and more reflective Andante. Likewise, the last two movements are exuberant. The symphonies, all of them, are true monuments of wonderful music. Mendelssohn was an extraordinarily talented musician with an unlimited sensitivity that provokes deep feelings when we hear his sublime music. The orchestration and direction are amazing. This is one of the best interpretations I have ever heard of this symphony. Congratulations for the magnificent recording that brings us unforgettable moments of delight and pleasure.

This is poorly written so I'm editing it. Sorry Jose:: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is an outstanding composer of the Romantic Period. His symphonies are works of extraordinary sensitivity and strength. Here the first movement simply glows. The second is more reflective while the last two express his youthful exuberance. His orchestration is amazing. This is one of the best interpretations I've heard. All of his symphonies are monuments to Mendelssohn's musical talent.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) - without a doubt the greatest child prodigy in the history of Western classical music. This was written when he was 15 years old. (!) Even W. A. Mozart at the same age couldn’t handle orchestra with such a convincing professionalism. A couple of years earlier aged 13 (!) Mendelssohn had already composed ’Gloria’ and ’Magnificat’ for soloists, choir and orchestra, strongly influenced by J. S. Bach, a composer of a life-long admiration of his. A lovely symphony with a wide range of emotions and a youthful energy. Wonderful performance by Frankfurt Radio Symphony and maestro Paavo Järvi, bravi tutti! 👏

Complimenti.

Great, but Mendelssohn has competition: Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga born 1806 died at nineteen wrote a wonderful symphony, perhaps influenced by Schubert. Jan Vorisek, born 1791 has an impressive symphony that may have influenced Schubert. Carl Maria von Weber must have influenced many, including Mendelssohn. Beethoven influenced them all. Josef Haydn is the big daddy of all that follows.

Listen to the 1st mvt at 0.75---Much much better. Why does everyone perform Mendelssohn at such high speed? The music loses soooo much of the drama inherent in it! These conductors need to slow the Eff down! That being said---The flaw in this symphony even when slowed down is that there is not much break in the "Beethovenian fury." Part of why Beethoven's symphonies are so powerful is because of the contrasts he uses. He follows up a section of fury with a sweet and gentle section which he then gradually transitions back to fury. there isn't enough of this in this symphony. While this is a brilliant piece for a 15 year old composer, it is missing in that element(Tho there is a lot of really great moments in the symphony, especially the fist movement)
@leestamm3187
@leestamm3187 7 ай бұрын
Mendelssohn specifies "Allegro di Molto" for the first movement, which is a very brisk tempo. If you enjoy it at 0.75 speed, then by all means do so, but recognize that the composer intended it to be played faster.
@mrbrianmccarthy
@mrbrianmccarthy 7 ай бұрын
My comment was directed at whether high speeds are always beneficial to a composition and I would argue that in most cases they are not. Also---Just to let you know, I don't doubt that Mendelssohn wanted this fast---But Mendelssohn was someone who like Mozart, hated speed for speeds sake. An Allegro from him/what those composers thought was fast was probably a lot slower than what we think of as "fast " today. But let's not also forget that Mendelssohn was young when he wrote this Symphony. There's good moments in it, but I think as a composer myself that Mendelssohn makes a mistake here by starting out right from the gate like the Symphony had already started 5 minutes ago---and a hyper fast tempo emphasizes that flaw in the piece.In the case of this symphony, slowing it down even more than that makes the intro a lot more effective, more Beethovenian/dramatic. But even with a slower tempo, there's no real intro to this 1st mvt. It just blares at you right off in a very immature way------(Again he was young, so he had a lot of youthful spirit, no doubt about his genius either) The point is----high speed tempo whether he wanted it or not IMO doesn't make THIS piece sound better. High speed purely for high speed sake is boring , and works a lot better as an effect, or maybe in a perpetuum mobile---but a whole movement of ultra fast tempo with no spaces or drama or dynamics wears the listener out. I have found with a lot of these hyper fast pieces,A slower tempo, even just 5-10% often makes the difference between a dramatic performance that speaks to people and one which just blows right past them . Just my opinion.
@mrbrianmccarthy
@mrbrianmccarthy 7 ай бұрын
BTW---go listen to more of Mendelssohn's music and you'll see that along with Mozart, his pieces are often taken at hyper fast tempos which IMO, rob them of the power and depth the composers had put into them. Never forget: An "allegro" in Mozart's & Mendelssohn's time is not an Allegro of today.
