Barber's Symphony is underrated, and forgotten in America. It's wonderful to see it performed by one of the finest orchestras in the world and helping to make the music international. Bravo!

Not exactly forgotten. The reason why I know it is because Neemi Järvi conducted it with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in a performance more than thirty years ago that I heard on the radio when I lived in the Los Angeles area. If Järvi conducts it, I would say it's not forgotten. Incidentally, that DSO performance was marvelous. But you are right in that it's underrated. It should be performed much more often because it's just that good! It's not just a great American symphony, it's just a great symphony no matter how you slice it.

Isn't it best forgotten? Sounds like it was written by a robot churning out what a symphony should sound like. 60 yrs of composing and only one memorable melody, yes you know the one. There is nothing worthwhile in this bluster signifying nothing. Emperors new clothes - something widely accepted as true or professed as being praiseworthy, due to an unwillingness of the general population to criticize it or be seen as going against popular opinion.

For what it's worth, Barber completed this work shortly before he turned 26. When it was performed at the opening concert of the 1937 Salzburg Festival, it became the first symphonic work by an American composer to be played at the festival.

Wonderful performance. A sparse audience but maybe that was Covid (2021). Great sound and very fine playing - oboe solo very nice. Barber sure loved his oboe solos, there's a similar one in the slow movement of his violin concerto. What a fine piece this is. Compact, intense, and just like the Sibelius 7th that he modelled it on.

Wunderschöne und lebhafte Aufführung dieser einzigartig konstruierten doch perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit gut phrasierten doch perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente. Die Virtuosität aller Einzelspieler ist echt ergreifend. Die intelligente und geniale Dirigentin leitet das hoch funktionelle Orchester im veränderlichen Tempo und mit effektiver Dynamik. Wahrlich hörenswert!

Beim Hören ist mir ein Gedanke gekommen. Ich würde zu gerne Leute, die (nur) auf Rap stehen fragen wollen: "Leute, fühlt ihr überhaupt noch etwas? Musik, das ist ja nicht nur das, was wir hören, sondern auch das, was in unserem Gehirn an Gefühlen ausgelöst wird. Man sollte die "klassische Musik" nicht unterschätzen.

Vor allem stellt sich mir dabei die Frage, was dieses Obsession mit Texten soll. Alles was populär ist sind Lieder. Musik funktioniert aber doch eigentlich viel besser ohne Text.

@@Quotenwagnerianer Nicht zwingend. Auch in der Romantik gab es schon Lieder, bei denen der Text die Emotionen der Musik sogar verstärkt (Winterreise von Schubert z. B.). So ist es auch bei vielen modernen Songs, obwohl natürlich meist der Text im Vordergrund steht.

Observe how few people are in the audience! Is this had been a performance of Beethoven's Fifth it would've been overflowing. Hardly anyone appreciates 20th century composers. Few are even aware of them.

Marin and this wonderful orchestra worked very hard to make this music come alive but the end result just misses the mark of greatness. It is certainly very "symphonic" but seems to be full of empty gestures. My overall impression is that this is zombie romanticism. Hate me if you will.
