Good video. It's the best I came across for this specific fix. In the end, I went the route of splitting the wire in the attic and dropping Romex down separately for each fixture so I didn't have to cut out any drywall - And I can use one of the 4" circles I cut out for my new fixtures to fix the 4" hole the original box left. But many of your tips were used along the way. Thanks!

Unfortunately having 2 sets of Romex in that small pancake box is not up to code. You can have the connections in the canopy of the light but i see the terminations inside the box.

If you can’t have two Romex then what can you have?

Great info, as a rookie DIY who is justifiably intimidated by electrical, it would’ve been helpful for more detail on splicing the wires. There’s a lot of videos on relocating a fixture but the main attraction to your title was the splicing of one fixture to two and I’m still a bit confused on how you did that. Thank you!

Thanks for this, very helpful. In my case I ended up with 14-3 wire when I only needed 14-2, but I just capped the red wire at both ends

What if the wire from the original light is not long enough to reach new box?????????????????

Install a junction box there and use more wire.

Does the electricity in the original wire run through the light and out to the other light? I didnt catch how the second light gets power.

That is correct. It runs in series going into one light first then into the other light.

Shouldn't you have routed these up through the attic instead of damaging the drywall? This way you would have only made your J-Box hole and 2x 1" holes into the 2x4's above.

Yeah but working through the attic is such a pain. So I figured this would be easier for me.
