​@@morobest5351 Nintendo don't care for their systems as they used to. Also copyright is suggestive as that usually only entails to ips not the games. Plus emulation is used widely as a form of preserving what gets lost or was either never obtainable to begin with or just plain forgotten. A copyright infringement would be in place if the person was making money off of the games or content or the content is still wanted. Hshop doesn't at all plus an example: Nintendo made a game for the GBA called the legend of Zelda: a link to the past/four swords. Now to people who never played would think it's just alttp put in GBA but they added extra stuff to it even a secret dungeon and ending but they never brought this version back out since. Four swords may have but not this version. So your pretty much expecting people to let games/media that haven't had any remasters or remakes and that are left in the dust forever stay in the dust forever. What about those who resell games on eBay or Amazon or video game stores dedicated to reselling old games and media? Are THEY committing copyright infringement? Nintendo and every other company products and the like that aren't made anymore and left behind get sold all the time online as well in their physical versions even if they say do not resale on some special ones like display only models or promotional items. The companies don't get a dime for when such gets resold. By your view then eBay and the like or ANYTHING where the game,media,content is resold or made available again (by means like hshop) way after their company has tossed them into the trash bin of no return is apparently copyright infringement when it ain't. eBay,Amazon,and so on sell the real games or even fakes for ludicrous amounts of money while Nintendo Sony and Microsoft as an example don't even see a cent. You really expect people to just be like "oh well the item isn't made anymore/isn't available to buy anymore, that's it then I guess." No. Get over yourself. If the eShops were still up people would mostly buy the games still but when Nintendo doesn't care and never reconsiders or listen to their consumers and pull the plug anyways despite it would literally make them more money in the long run if they kept it open since they clearly hate physical versions of games (look at Nintendo switch games... 300+ for ones bought in the eShop while if you got a physical version you only get 60 gold points (and also has a expiration date for no reason as well) )

Emulation is software that emulates hardware. hshop is just a platform which gives you software, and offers to install it on real hardware. Not what emulation is. Piracy doesn't care if a digital good isn't for sale, if it's owned by an IP holder and using an unofficial, unlicenced means of getting access to that good, it's piracy. Emulation isn't the same as piracy, but can use pirated software. If you didn't buy the games and back them up yourself, it's piracy. (it's also preservation, and a moral good)

I did purchase quite a few games before the shops closed, but obviously I couldn’t get everything I wanted.. modded my 3DS the next day and I grabbed what I what I wasn’t able to over the life of the 3DS.

@@smallthoughts_nl there's not as many cool apps on Wii U as there are 3DS, but I would say to keep an eye on Pretendo Network. They're slowly bringing back all the online features, and the one I'm specifically interested in is Miiverse. On top of that, there's some cool mods for various games like Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 if you look online, the game modding scene on Wii U is a fairly nice size. Also make sure that you're running Tiramasu or Aroma instead of Haxchi, especially if you want your system to boot right into homebrew on boot. Haxchi is a bit out of date, though if you get a Wii U now there's not even a way to install it now that the eShop is closed since it required a legally purchased DS game. As for games, you can't go wrong with the likes of Mario Maker and Splatoon and Super Mario 3D World. Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is really fun, and the HD versions of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are as well. If you like RPGs then I also definitely recommend Xenoblade Chronicles X, one of the few Wii U exclusives that has yet to release elsewhere.

I love how bricking your system is never mentioned as a real thing that can and does happen to people trying to homebrew their consoles. I have had a wii u and 2ds since 2021and have spent loads of money putting games on them over time. When I was like 15 I was mad that things weren't just free so I would've disguised my not having money with some righteous indignation about being anti capitalism. My advice to anyone looking to buy a 3ds(any of em) or wii u in 2023 after the shop closed? Don't bother getting a wii u at all but the 3ds* has loads of good games and you can play ds games as well. The wii u is massively underpowered and it struggles to play any game not made by Nintendo. It's fine for snes and gba games though

@@greenkoopa bricking your system is ALWAYS mentioned as a real thing that can and does happen to people trying to homebrew their consoles. you should very much research about the possible risks of modding your console before even setting up anything and if you're watching a good video guide (which you usually shouldn't, go read written guides as those are 99% of the time up-to-date) the person should always tell you to make backups in case a brick does happen, which is already very rare if you follow the instructions correctly. from what i've seen, the chances of bricking a 3ds are pretty low if you do everything right, and the chances on the wii u are even lower unless you are using an unstable, outdated and crappy method such as coldboot haxchi

Some are fine like animal crossing new leaf only being aboht 30 dollars but there’s others or like certain Sony games like the first gravity rush that are down right extortionate. I honestly bought my 3ds games legit until the e shop closed, then i dont feel as guilty downloading them from the h shop I bought a link between worlds 2 days before it closing because honestly that game is worth every penny plus some monster hunter games that i know for a fact are stuck on the 3ds. this is definitely my outlook on piracy, I try to prioritise supporting the devs and publishers when I can (especially indies) but if there’s no longer any official avenues to purchase the game from the iP holder or if the price the physical versions are going for in the second hand market isn’t justified then I have no issue with pirating games, as long as the platform itself is no longer supported by the rights holder.

This isn't a criticism of your video (I actually really liked it), but I wish people would stop talking about this. It flew under the radar for a long time, but with the spotlight being focused on it, it's going to attract unwanted attention. I'm all for making games accessible to everyone, but HShop should be something that's whispered about, not shouted. I've read multiple comments like yours at this point, but I'm not sure what to make of them. I can get that driving attention to this service, could increase the chance of Nintendo going after it. But I'm sure they've already known about hShop for a while. Considering Nintendo didn't make a big deal of the 3DS and Wii U eShop closure (no sale and barely any communication about it), the 3DS and everything around it is not one of their priorities right now. If Nintendo was planning on providing a service that brings back 3DS games, I'm sure hShop would have felt it a long time ago. However, for the community it's only natural to have a spike of interest in an alternative service that gives them access to the experiences they just lost. Accordingly, KZbinrs are inevitably going to make videos on things people are interested in at the moment. But my guess is that it will quiet down after a few weeks, eventually flying under the radar again. Either way, all we can do is make the best of the situation as long as it lasts and enjoy the experience. Worst case, hShop isn't even the only way to get 3DS games, updates and DLCs - It just happens to be the most convenient at the time. And for every service like this Nintendo tries to shut down, new ones will pop up.

With how many people started mass buying 3DS eShop games BECAUSE it was about to get closed (and likely not because they actually wanted to play them), I guess it was a smart business move by Nintendo. Don't get me wrong. I absolutely hate it and it's a disgusting move from Nintendo. But from a business perspective, kinda smart nonetheless. I do think that the amount of games that were now sold by FOMO, would not have been sold in the next 10 years, if there was never any fear of the eshop closing down.

I will accept that I, at times, have been part of that group. But from my perspective, I just feel bad for those who’ve spent that much money over FOMO, especially on digital titles which hold negligible monetary value. Like you said, it’s a matter of could or should, anyone could easily pirate or emulate their games, but should they? Before the eshop shut down, not really. But now it’s fair game, and advised for games that are no longer available or being priced for 10x their value. “If you’re not pirating your games, you’re getting ripped off.”

@@Just_Shaun i think its pretty fair to say that you should pirate eshop exclusives, or games that are absurdly expensive otherwise, since its basically impossible to play them now, without piracy. most of the piracy talk i find more annoying, is from allot of the people who use the steam deck, i see a ton of people who say "don't buy a switch, just buy a steam deck" and people just generally hating on the switch, and its users, for not using a steamdeck, or emulating switch games on pc. which is pretty lame to me

Closing the eshop is Ninty's way to say "Go buy a Switch". Fair enough. However, many games are not available on Switch and of course lack the stereoscopic effect. In such a case, preservation is more important than (potential) profit imho. In many cases the hShop will "create" future customers like somebody borrowing a book from the public library and ending up buying the whole series from a store. Long live the 3DS🙂

I don't feel bad for pirating when there's no other available option. If there's a physical copy, I always prefer to get that, but if a game is digital only, and there's no other way to get it, than yeah, I don't feel bad for pirating it. And, I can see the "you should have bought it when the eshop was active" argument, but the problem is, sometimes you find out about a game after it's too late. I mean, I'm still discovering 3ds games and I've owned one since they came out in 2011.

I was such a handheld gaming nerd when the 3DS came out. I just graduated HS and moved in with some friends and I preorder it 😂 we all ended up having some sort of 2 or 3ds and played games like fantasy life, monster hunter, and resident evil revelations together. I bought my daughter a 2ds as her first console like two years ago and we modded it, now we can play so many things together. Really a great console and no reason to get rid of it if you still have fun with it.

​@@TheOrangeDiamond Did you attach your 3ds/Wii U eShop to your Switch eShop by connecting your Nintendo Network ID to your Nintendo Account, then buy a Switch eShop points card either physical or digital and enter the code onto either the Redeem Code page on the Switch or their website while signed in? Because that was the only way to add points to the 3ds/Wii U eShops over the final few months. I figured this out in barely the nick of time and was able to add points until the end.

​@@TheOrangeDiamond They did the same to me - all my three credit cards kept being declined, as well as my PayPal account that even had funds on the account (and in other words didn't just rely on the denied credit cards). I was forced to buy digital Nintendo eShop cards that only one single store in my country offered, to at all be able to buy anything from the eShop - I got zero support or explanations from Nintendo on why the cards kept being denied, but one thing is for sure - it was not the fault of the credit card companies or even the normally horrible PayPal. To make matters worse, in Europe, several games, among them including Mario Golf: World Tour, did not allow you to buy the DLCs until the final few days before the eShop closing. Nintendo handled this situation so outrageously badly and I'm 100% done with supporting Nintendo with any new systems - I'm so glad I never got a Switch - it's the first system since Super NES and Virtual Boy that I didn't buy. I used to be a Nintendo fanboy, but Nintendo has been going completely downhill since Satoru Iwata's death and if I get a "Switch 2," it will only be for pirating on.

I really appreciate your take on this, seeing the eshop die is sad and while piracy is a means to accessing that content, I also feel like I've seen folks online celebrating it as if it now gives them justification when they didn't have it before. I feel like a thing people sometimes take for granted is that offline, inaccessible media is only avaliable online due to the hard work and archival efforts of loving fans who 90% of which do for free or via support donations. Its sad to see the eshop die, it was sad when it happened to the wii and it sucks just as much now and it's very sad that digital media, especially video games are seen as something temporary that will disappear one day unless fans archive it themselves. Also the comment about nostalgia for a product you never got to experience in ita hay day hit me pretty hard as I had to sell my 3ds in high school and never got another one untill 2019 aswell.

I'm the same I always try to show my support to Nintendo to always buy physical copies of games. However, eshop exclusive games like pretty much all of the Ace Attorney games cannot be played anymore due to Nintendo's genius decision to close eshop. I recently got hshop downloaded and can finally play Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright. I feel bad I'm playing it for free, but Nintendo shot themselves by shutting down eshop without giving us another method to play the eshop exclusive games.

I love the 3DS. It was the first handheld that I bought after getting my first job back in college. It is such a nice handheld. Sadly, with Nintendo closing the eshop, there is now no way for me to buy games digitally. If I had a legal way to buy 3DS games that would give money to Nintendo, I would 100% do it. I love supporting things that give me joy, but… Nintendo is not giving us that option anymore. And the secondhand market for used Nintendo 3DS games is charging the games for way too high a cost… Due to all that, I recently modded my 3DS, and I now love my 3DS even more. Now I can play games that Nintendo isn’t selling anymore, and I can use custom themes :) it is very nice.

The issue is with discontinued support for the 3DS platform from Nintendo, there’s tons of exclusive content that was only available digitally which would otherwise be lost media if the fan community didn’t preserve all these games and DLC.

thank you for covering this topic, i recently found my old nintendo and was super excited because i bought a charger and as soon it was charged, I hopped on the eshop just to be devastated that is closed. I did research and learned that modding your 3ds is possible and hshop is a good way to get free games. But then i started thinking about piracy and luckily came across your yt channel. thank you so much. I bought an micro sd adapter so i could mod my 3ds. Again thank you.

I say that although it may be "morally correct" it's still not okay. Let's say for some reason you go to court for pirating games, telling the judge "I understand that these games are the properties of Nintendo, but I really want to play them" will not let you off the hook

Or you could just tell the Judge that even if you were to buy these games second hand, Nintendo aren't making any profit at all, as well as the fact that some of the games cost more than the console itself. So if Nintendo aren't making any profit even buying physically now, why is game preservation any different? Obviously if there's a game that is on E-Bay or Amazon for a reasonable price, then probably don't pirate them, but not everyone is in the same financial situation. As for Eshop exclusives? There's definitely a good argument for game preservation there. Damn, I think i got too carried away lol

I bought the vc pokemon during sale and the mh4u during this last sale to try the series for the first time. I didn't know about the animal crossing dlc until after it closed so I missed that. I will probably mod one of my old 3ds or 2ds to play more games or buy a new system for it.. Not my current galaxy though.

i never had a 3ds, i had up to the ds lite and then kinda stopped buying ds consoles after that. but one day before one of the newest pokemon was coming out, i had a SUPER bad urge to play pokemon, but wanted to play a new one that i havent played before, so i picked up a 3ds and pokemon x..then the new pokemon came out and i didnt touch my 3ds until a few days ago.. realized the eshop shut down not to long ago and was pretty bummed, then saw a video on the eshop and got RIGHT to modding my 3ds right after seeing that video hahahaha its so awesome having the full 3ds library completely new to me because there are TONS of what seem like great games that i have never even played before! didnt realize how awesome some of these games are!

It's Maplestory: Girl of Destiny. Not sure if you can call it a platformer. It's more of a hack and slash game based heavily on the MMO Maplestory. I thought I'd check out the English version, as this game didn't come out in the West! And indeed, the whole situation is quite conflicting. It's still piracy after all 🤔

I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility for Nintendo to come after hShop and shut it down, even though there's no financial incentive to do so. Normally this would be silly to even consider, but this is Nintendo we're talking about, one of the most spiteful and litigious game companies out there. I have a stock 3DS that I loaded up with everything I was able to get from the eshop before its closure, because I'm sentimental and I wanted to support the companies that helped make the 3DS such a great system. I also have another 3DS that I'm going to mod and grab everything I missed, is region-locked, stupidly expensive physically, or got delisted a long time ago. And I won't feel the least bit bad about it.

So, I learned something really interesting about people who pirate content, they are typically the same people who buy and consume the most as well. While there are the people who just want to not spend money at all, the people who don't spend money are the minority.

Yup. Piracy has led me to purchasing re-releases and even the originals, just to have them. Also having the option of not having to change cartridges and discs makes having back ups the best option

I dont think calling the eshop closure a "disrespect for [Nintendo's] own creations" a fair assessment. Im sure the creators of all those games would have loved for their games to stay live forever. I dont mind anyone who uses Hshop, but theres nothing wrong with people who decided to do a spending spree on 3ds' final days. Those spending sprees at least showed some people at Nintendo that the popular games need a rerelease somehow (looking at you, Pushmo). It is unfortunate that 3rd party developers will lose some accessability to their games. But they knew what they were signing up for when they put their game on someone elses digital shop.

3:35 Around 2017 I used my brother's dsi a lot, and many family members still had a wii. I didn't even know there was a wii u 3ds etc. When I wanted a wii myself, my father said that I had better take a switch, because it had just come out and the wii shop was closing. If I knew the wii u existed and had wii features I probably would have chosen that one, but I was too lazy to go to the website and see what they all have.

I spent over €200 in the span of those last three days. Irrational yes, but also exhilarating. I’m not against piracy but in my experience having hundreds of games means you don’t get to experience the end of any. The piracy laws were there to protect the ownership and sale of the person who put in the effort of creation. It doesn’t apply to destruction of things you created. If I put a nude of my ex online and later I delete it, it still is online and no longer mine. It’s not like a physical product. The argument to preserve for posterity does not hold legal ground if the device needed to run it is gone. It does make perfect sense however.

thanks for the advice for an example if you want to play super Mario world on switch and you don't have the money to pay for the expansion pack you can just play it on an emulator with no trouble the same goes for GBA games and Sega Genesis games too.

I 100% do NOT condone piracy and it should never be done, but in scenarios like this it just makes me wonder, what choice did Nintendo really give us? Many of the games we grew up with are either not for sale or are being sold at absurd (yet understandable) prices online, since those games aren’t being manufactured anymore. Yes, the website 3ds.hacks.guide offers the most official guide on how to mod, but also unmod your 3DS. In general however, you have to really go out of your way to brick your console these days. 3DS Homebrew has grown a lot and is considered pretty safe.

Personally, I've never heard of any instances where this was the case. Maybe back in the height of the 3DS, but now you can play online and everything without any issues. I've done that on multiple occasions with MK7, it was fine.

I know I'm very late to the trend, but unless it's both available to purchase AND a price that won't make you take out a second mortgage, I'd say try to get legitimately if possible. On the other hand though, when Nintendo decides to make a not insignificant amount of their games digital only, AND stop making them available, then legitimacy has to be thrown out the window, at minimum for game preservation
