'Good on you' - so often those "secondary sources" can really throw us off. Amazing how the number of these myths proliferate.

I wonder if people get the Tudors mixed up with Samurai? Women of the Samurai class would blacken their teeth once they got married. Apparently, they thought it prevented tooth decay. I agree that those sage balls sound interesting and I wouldn't mind giving it a try, though I wouldn't want to try to make them.

Love the fact that you were willing to go back and look for primary sources on something you had said as info from secondary or worse sources. Check out the “medieval food was over spiced to cover the taste of rotten meat”. This, even though spices were expensive, and slaughter of animals took place within a day or two of the sale or use of that meat. London meat markets had Laws about the sale of “off” meats. Interesting this rotten meat thing isn’t applied to present Thai or Tex-Mex food spiciness

I wonder how many folk were walking around with chronic toothache? I’m awfully grateful for modern dentistry.

Great video. One thing I want to say is nearly all modern medicine is based upon herbs. Take for example sage, rosemary, mint, lavender & tyme all have antimicrobial & antifungal compounds. These same herbs when burned release insect & rodent repellent properties. As well carbolic acid the first air antiseptic used in surgeries.

What recipe books did you use for your primary sources? Walnut shells are used to clean statues. The Statue of Joan of Arc in Portland is gilded. It was vandalized two years ago and it was blasted with Walnut shells to remove the paint but not the gilding, or at least not all of it. This works with marble and bronzes as well.

Blackening the teeth was done by geishas long ago and by some still today. The solution also prevents cavities.
