Well-meaning people are giving atrocious takes on Syria, saying that Izriel backed Assad and that if the "rebels" were Izrieli-backed then Izriel would not be destroying their military capabilities... By that logic Izriel would never have lobbied the US to decimate Syria's economy nor treated wounded opposition fighters. The reality is that Izriel wants its neighbours to be weak. If said neighbours can also be given the veneer of progressivism then that is even better, as they would then be all the easier to conquer. Izriel was building up to the occupation of Syrian territory since before the shock takeover of Aleppo. And since Izriel has come out and congratulated the diversity-friendly jihadists, it creating a buffer-zone aka conquering and ethnically cleansing Syrian land will not be interpreted as such by the regular news consumer. Watch Syria be turned into either another Libya or a playground for Western investment. The only thing that can save the Palestinian people is a popular, international movement that is ready to do... whatever it takes... to dismantle the sickness that is Izriel.

Syria capitulated after decades of ruinous economic sanctions and well financed mercenary forces sent into Syria by Turkey/US/Israel/Gulf states…this was a proxy war against Iran from the get go with the above sponsors of the jihadis all pursuing their own geopolitical agendas. As it is interesting that outlets, and in particular liberal outlets, will always tell us the most effective way to obtain change is electoralism, but this 1 action has created more discussion of the issue by those outlets than anything I can recall from the past 10 years. I don't necessarily think we should advocate murder as praxis, but it would seem clear to me that we need starker individual action to put fear in the minds of the rich if people want any change.

I'm becoming increasingly puzzled by reporting on the left over Syria and am wondering what I am missing. First, the Syrian government said it was moving to a free market, certainly preferable (I'd have thought) to what they have now and definitely the best approach to global integration and economic growth. But why keep insisting on it 'neoliberalising'? Free markets can be anything from Hayek to Keynes, from America to the Nordics. While it's true the only measures they've stated have been those to do with the institution of a free market and Keynesian tweaks have not been announced, those things can only be implemented once the economy is underway and the tax revenue starts coming in. Then there's talk of abuses happening in the country. Are we surprised? My only surprise is Syria has not descended into still greater levels of anarchy than the isolated instances listed, but with the fall of Assad and various factions, or even individuals with an axe to grind, doubtless out there in numbers things are going to be messy, even ugly for a while... but so far not as ugly as what the new regime has replaced. Finally, was that prisoner a crisis actor? Maybe. Anything is possible, including jet contrails being an experiment in geoengineering under the leadership of Bill Gates, but how plausible is it? They weren't even sure there was a man under those blankets until they pulled them away for all their repeated 'Is anyone there?' The bloke was terrified. They had to shoot the locks off. My suspicion is they went all round the installation banging on doors and shot locks off where they got a response, didn't bother where they didn't assuming those cells to be empty. And clearly that guy wasn't about to sing back a cheery 'I'm here!' when they went round the cells. I assume shooting at metal in an enclosed space is probably not markedly healthy, and why would they bother for an empty room? I would also add that he's one heck of an actor if he can vomit on demand. All the negativity - I get it. And yes, it could all come true, though I'm not sure free trade under the Hayekian model AND a Taliban-like regime are compatible, so if you want to see doom, choose only one. But for now, for once, can we just accept that there is also the possibility this COULD BE good news instead of letting off the warning sirens to drown every ounce of hope out?

You're terribly naïve. Historically neoliberal policies gut the resources and manpower from global south countries for the benefit of foreign enterprise because it's cheap. Now Syria will develop but only to a small extent and wealth will become hyper concentrated in the hands of the few. Those few will also have a large amount of political clout to control the state. They'll maintain the neoliberal status quo by giving foreign investors and enterprise. Leaving the average worker/farmer to the dust. This is also under the assumption that Syria will remain stable since its an ethnically and religiously diverse country that will be ruled by a Salafist government whose members used to be in Al Nusra, Al Qaeda, and ISIS.

@@Potatotron10000 yes I agree in a different world this kind of comment would not exist, and neither would that kind of makeup. At the moment we are ourselves and a multitude of representations that also produce meaning. And these meanings travel at the speed of light and are lite but have very heavy undertones,,, which maybe accounts for all the highlights used

for instance think of our current hero Luigi - it's his top looks that kind of give a ring and a zing to the story and this is maybe because in narrative theory since the beginning of time heroes have been beautiful and heroism is beautiful .

and another thing - I have notices the women presenters on Novara are trying to deal with their visibility and often have new hair, or new makeup or a new look. This is not confined to them but is a big internal pressure on women in a society, that is evidenced on the show. Probably in mainstream media they discuss hair and make u[p with professional and do screen tests - because mainstream media has nomalised patriarchal oppression and internalised repression.
