Thanks for posting this! It should be made more prominent if possible. I spent hours trying to troubleshoot the issue. I had N64 games working from the internal storage last week and yesterday I decided to start from scratch following your guide so I could move the games to an external drive and I could not get either N64 core to work. What I noticed is that Mupen would say Vulkan next to the name when trying to load the core while before and in your video it was using a different video driver. Whatever change introduced this issue happened in the couple days after I installed mine.

I have no idea if this fixes lag and graphical issues, but if you have a n64 game that can't run properly, check to see if that game has a wii wad version and try running that in dolphin instead! As for standalone mods with the n64, I have no idea how you could do that using dolphin but maybe there's a way to create your own n64 wads?

Update: I uninstalled retroarch and reinstalled everything, deleted the files on my drive from the previous set up. Then I set retroarch up & installed the file you have pinned & now everything is back working. I think it should be noted that if people follow this guide people will indeed have the same issue I had and not be able to play n64 games. You literally have to start new because there’s no way to change the settings without being in a n64 game then changing the settings that way in the quick menu.

@@theretrofrets you didn’t touch anything? I think what you need to do is delete the file off your usb & (important) computer, make sure the file from the computer is totally gone. That’s what I had to do. Then download and place it in. If it says (1) or (2) at the end because of re-downloads then it didn’t work for me…. I genuinely don’t know the specifics. Make sure you reset the save configuration of files before you do everything too. It’ll probably freeze when you do this. Just press the logo button on your controller and close out of it. Then re-download everything.

Can anyone please help? I'm running retroarch 1.12.0 on a series X, had a previous build and never had issues with N64 games but I'm running into some with this new build. Whenever I load into an N64 game, whether zipped or not and using either core, the game's scale is blown up massively and I can only see the bottom corner of whatever game is running. This also happens when I open the quick-menu so I can't even see what I'm doing to change any settings. The bottom left side of the game and menu are taking up the entire screen and I don't know why. Like I said never had any issues with previous builds.

Same thing is happening to me on 1.12.0. I have found a work around but it's not ideal... If you can manage to navigate the menus and switch the core option, RDP Plugin to Angrylion and then set the video driver in the top level menu to d3d11, then save the configuration as a core override... after a restart the correct screen size should be restored. I think it might be a bug with the gl video driver when running on xbox series consoles.

Hello! I'm having a strange issue specifically with N64 games, all my games using either Mupen or the other option are not scaled correctly, I'm stuck looking at at a close up of what would be the lower left portion of the screen. I've tried with and without integer scaling and forcing different aspect ratios. As it's cropped in so close I can not see the top options in Core settings

I’m having the exact same issue. I changed my series X resolution to 1080p and that helped. I was able to switch to Angrylion and then put my series x back in 4k and that fixed it.

Xbox One has a bad CPU for emulation so you aren't going to be seeing much of anything past PS1 work right.

Hello, I was hoping someone could help me. followed the setup guide pretty strictly , (dev mode & USB)I can’t seem to get N64 games to run on retroarch on my series X. Im sure I configured my usb correctly, and isn’t retroarch already supposed to have the cores needed to play n64 games ? Anyway, my games keep crashing upon loading , and I’ve tried both of the n64 core services you can download right from retroarch. I’ve tried downloading a core off the web and uploading it to config-> mupen 64 plus. I made sure to delete the previous. This didn’t seem to work though, as the downloaded ‘updated’ file seemed to be the same one that retroarch already gives you now when you try to launch mupen64 plus. I was hoping there were other cores to download that could maybe fix my problem? any point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

@@ArchadesGames for anyone with the same issue, I had to reinstall retroarch as I could not revert setting back to original without it crashing. You have to make sure not to update mupen 64. You can prevent this by locking that specific core beforehand in setting. Took me a few days but hopefully this helps someone else too

Sorry if this has been posted already, but there is a way to fix the DK64 Camera Reset Glitch without leaving Glide64, and the solution comes from A Retropie forum. " Okay I've finally figured this out, in Retroarch > Options > GLideN64 there now is an option to prioritise INT or the Core options. Turn off the INT and change Depth buffer to RDRAM to "off". Save the game config as you don't want this for all of mupen64plus-next it'll break pretty much every other game. DK64 now runs really smooth and no camera issue in Retroarch version. Although I am on a 2ghz overclock it's worth nothing. I also tested this on a version of the Kiosk demo rom and it works too. It's also worth noting anyone going for 100% there's a point you'd need to change the setting one way then back again,. The reason this change was made a few years back is because you can't photograph a banana fairy inside a cage later in the game. But I don't think the dev who tested that change they made realised it knocks the camera out completely. " Edit: Forgot to mention I tested this on the Series X just now and it worked.

Hey - Whenever I attempt to load any 64 Core it loads with (2.4-Vulkan 1b67122) next to the core name. When I try to boot into Mupen it fails to load every game. When I try to boot into ParaLLei it crashes Retroarch. Any ideas? I've googled a ton and have found no solutions. When I set the xbox video driver to use gl it always resets to DX3D11 whenever I start Retroarch, even if I save config.

Glide64 creates a lot of glitches in my N64 games, every single one I've tried. I have to play all of them with AngryLion and I'm unable to upscale anything. Retroarch 1.15.0 msvc2019, Xbox Series S.

Because glide sucks and Angrylion is a native only plugin. Xbox can't use the right plugins for great N64 Emulation sadly.

Xbox is horrible for N64. It doesn't support the video backend it needs without a wrapper so it runs way worse compared to most devices. Angrylion is the best use case but it makes the CPU.

If you are still interested, I know how to do ps2...just copy the memcards folder from your pcsx2 folder on your PC, to the pcsx2 folder in RA...change memory card option to legacy...should work right away...Haven't got around to ps1 save yet

Actually upon fiddling around, I changed the settings in glide, then went to restore the core and it worked.. launch a game and immediately go into the core and change back to angrylion and it seems to be performing well at the 4K resolution :o You gotta change the core back to glider before you close the game though and just repeat when you go to play another n64 game again.

You aren't switching to Angrylion you are staying on glide. You have to restart content for it to change video plugins. Glide gives you upscaling at the cost of compatibility.

Question…I’ve done this setup many times on previous versions of RetroArch but for some reason on this new one, or latest version, I’m not able to run any of the N64 games on my Xbox series S. I can run nes, snes and others but not working anymore for n64. Any tips or have you heard or know of anything going wrong with this? I’ve updated all cores and everything is up to date and still nothing. Please help. Thanks in advance.

try the angrylion plugin for any games that have problematic stutters, it usually fixes it without issue. it doesnt have the shader recompilation issues that glide often does. for optimal performance, under the angrylion specific settings, you should set the thread sync level to low. (and for a couple specific games, you might want to change the multi-threading option from "all threads" to a value of 5 or 6. some games perform worse when set to all-threads for whatever reason.)

Hey Man, I have been unable to play mario kart wii on xbox, it always randomly crashes when loading a character or a course. Any idea how i could fix this ? I updated retroarch to the latest version, tried a bunch of video settings, a bunch of roms/file types, no success. Thanks for your guides and your help ;)

That's normal for RA Dolphin and Wii games especially on Xbox. Only fix is to get a Wii or a Computer for proper standalone Dolphin

I'm using a Xbox Series S on Dev Mode and can't seem to get Mupen to want to load the game as long as the Hi Res Texture settings are enabled. I go into the CPU menu after resetting my config file and the game loads up fine minus the textures not being there. I'm using GLideN64 since that is the only CPU that has options for Textures ETC. Has anyone found a workaround for this? I've seen youtube videos of people playing on series s with the OOT HD Texture pack so there has to be right? All the files are named correctly and in the correct places for it to work. Help?

I have been playing around with Mario Kart 64 HD 4k "there are no 1080pk texture pack i think" and it loads but italso quickly crashes Retroarch so i can't really recommend HD Packs on Xbox as far as my experience goes. That said you want to have turned off Hires cache method options. - mupen64plus-EnableTextureCache = "True" - mupen64plus-txHiresEnable = "True" - mupen64plus-txCacheCompression = "True" - mupen64plus-txHiresFullAlphaChannel = "True" - mupen64plus-EnableEnhancedTextureStorage = "False" - mupen64plus-EnableEnhancedHighResStorage = "False"

I am running this on an original Xbox One, running in retail mode, and I can't get any N64 game to run smoothly at all with any setting adjustments. It runs extremely slow with choppy audio but I haven't been able to figure out why. I am guessing that the original Xbox One somehow isnt strong enough?

@Archades Games so I downloaded that file, and on my external hard drive, I placed it into the config folder. Then, in retroarch, I went to settings, directory, configs, E:, config, use this directory. Then I tried to load a game, and it still said it failed to load content. What step am I missing?

I replaced the file again as your pinned comment shows, I reset retroarch on the config file too. Still not working
