@@GreenLeefMusic I'm not convinced that was a real concern. "Requires permissions beyond normal app usage" .. like what? The only reasonable answer I can come up with is how emulators essentially require external file I/O, through USB or network protocols. The fact that this was ever permitted at all means that the Xbox team have pretty high confidence that their fortress is well secured. That does not bode well for the opposition party. Good luck, hackers. I always like to see every console busted wide open, because the further we go, the more they tighten the screws, and the less likely there will be any ability to enjoy this stuff 15+ years from now.

@joemck85 Жыл бұрын
There is a certain type of person who just wants to run Linux or emulators for old consoles on a system. They are often against piracy and are happy to buy any current games they want to play on the console, so as long as they're able to run their Linux and retro emulators they don't search for exploits that would give full control of the system and enable widespread piracy. This is the group Sony wronged back when they took away the "other OS" option on the PS3. They were happily running Linux under a hypervisor that didn't give access to the full capabilities of the system, but once they were motivated, they quickly found and released a full control exploit to get back what was taken away. And of course that led to easy-to-install custom firmware that seamlessly loads games from iso files. Seeing as how Microsoft is just closing a loophole and leaving the same $20 option that was open since the start open, it's probably not going to enrage people enough to crack the system. If they get into delisting actual purchased apps and yanking them from people who paid, it might though.

@WackoMcGoose Жыл бұрын
@@BallisticGhast6 Actually, that last part isn't 100% true, Apple and Google _absolutely_ have the capability to remotely delete specific apps (or versions of apps) from your device, sideloaded or not, jailbroken/rooted or not. Google's version is called Play Protect (idk the name for the apple equivalent), and it's basically a blocklist of APKs that, supposedly, are "deemed to be malicious" and are automatically deleted on sight from the client device, without warning to the user. They did this to kill any remaining installs of Google Play Music after people found and began distributing a pre-killswitch version of the APK, and if a nationwide TikTok ban comes to pass, Google (and Apple) will almost surely be ordered to add that app to their blocklists as well, to forcibly remove them from client devices (because merely removing it from the app store isn't gonna stop anyone, nor will DNS blackholing, etc)...

From U.S. V. MICROSOFT 2001: COURT'S FINDINGS OF FACT "411. Many of the tactics that Microsoft has employed have also harmed consumers indirectly by unjustifiably distorting competition. The actions that Microsoft took against Navigator hobbled a form of innovation that had shown the potential to depress the applications barrier to entry sufficiently to enable other firms to compete effectively against Microsoft in the market for Intel-compatible PC operating systems. That competition would have conduced to consumer choice and nurtured innovation. The campaign against Navigator also retarded widespread acceptance of Sun's Java implementation. This campaign, together with actions that Microsoft took with the sole purpose of making it difficult for developers to write Java applications with technologies that would allow them to be ported between Windows and other platforms, impeded another form of innovation that bore the potential to diminish the applications barrier to entry. There is insufficient evidence to find that, absent Microsoft's actions, Navigator and Java already would have ignited genuine competition in the market for Intel-compatible PC operating systems. It is clear, however, that Microsoft has retarded, and perhaps altogether extinguished, the process by which these two middleware technologies could have facilitated the introduction of competition into an important market. 412. Most harmful of all is the message that Microsoft's actions have conveyed to every enterprise with the potential to innovate in the computer industry. Through its conduct toward Netscape, IBM, Compaq, Intel, and others, Microsoft has demonstrated that it will use its prodigious market power and immense profits to harm any firm that insists on pursuing initiatives that could intensify competition against one of Microsoft's core products. Microsoft's past success in hurting such companies and stifling innovation deters investment in technologies and businesses that exhibit the potential to threaten Microsoft. The ultimate result is that some innovations that would truly benefit consumers never occur for the sole reason that they do not coincide with Microsoft's self-interest."

We so often come back to the problem of ownership in digital media. Anything that has an online-required component-even if the totality of the code is on the machine-can be blocked, deleted, or banned from your system. This is beyond absurd. In the enterprise space, you can use things indefinitely with many hardware ir software packages, but if you don’t pay for support, you don’t get updates or vendor help. That’s fine. You literally get what you pay for and it’s yours. Too many companies have put retail products behind license server logins on run. Single player games that run the AI and store player data server-side only are just galling. The situation just plain sucks for anyone who travels, or has any issues with local networking/services. It makes what would be a good game experience either bad or impossible. And this all sidesteps issues of rights ending, companies going out of business, and planned obsolescence.

@TwelveBaud Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the concern isn't hardware capabilities, it's privacy and potential access to sensitive or unauthorized information. At least PC side, UWP apps are only supposed to be able to access files that are packaged within the app itself, files downloaded from predetermined Web sites, save data the app creates, or **music** and **pictures** that you specifically and individually choose. You can request higher permissions, but they're only approved for a very narrow set of use cases (e.g. device driver frontends) and at least in Windows 8 popped permission request dialogs at install time that clearly said "can access every file in the system". I don't know how retail-mode emulators were accessing games but I doubt it was through the default permissions. If it has the technical capability of reading files from a USB stick that it gets to show its own chooser for, it has the technical capability of reading anything stored on that USB stick, including documents you thought it wouldn't because you didn't pick them. If it can read files from a network share, chances are you're logging into that share, and that's a credentials compromise because you can't be certain that it's not using those credentials for something else; also, that means it's able to see the system names and any accessible files for any computer on your network. If it's able to read arbitrary files from the Xbox internal storage, that means it can also see what other games you have installed, try to pull assets out of them, get more information out of your Gamertag than is officially available (e.g. play history), potentially even discover other Gamertags on the system, including local-only profiles for children and teens. Do those emulators do that? Almost certainly not, but they _could_, and a malicious ROM that performs a carefully controlled crash could too. Dev mode specifically blocks off a lot of all that. Dev mode apps must be signed by you, so you can evaluate for yourself what they intend to access before they do so. Although permissions are available for review both dev and retail, in dev you can specifically rip them out if you think the app doesn't need it. You can specifically put ROMs you want the app to see within those constrained channels without giving emulators access to anything else. And they have no way to access anything sensitive on the console itself -- the data on the retail partitions remains encrypted and unavailable, and any Xbox Live information or Gamertag information it could try to get through legitimate channels is generic and simulated and doesn't disclose anything about you.

Seriously, I can't understand why anyone would pay $500 for a machine that is designed from boot to power off to limit and corral what you can do with it where you can get banned from online multiplayer on a whim, you don't get physical backups or offline installers so games can effectively just disappear at a moment's notice, console exclusives are largely a thing of the past (excluding Nintendo), and AAA games are such trash these days I wouldn't pay full price for them even on PC let alone buy new hardware to play them. The one thing PC games don't typically do is split screen multiplayer, but with emulation being where it is and almost no current console games supporting it I really don't think you can say that consoles have the advantage there.

Too many people (whether out of honest ignorance, Xbox fanboyism, or sensationalist clickbaiting) promote features like this without providing the caveat that they can be restricted or taken away by Microsoft. The obvious result of this is: People will just services offered by the pirates. By doing this Microsoft is just helping pirates, as Gabe Newell once said : "If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable "

@djm9937 Жыл бұрын
But surely Microsoft can stop emulation on Dev mode also if it sees fit?
@Gameboygenius Жыл бұрын
How would they do that? Let's look at a few possibilities. Say they check for a known list of emulator executables. If the exe file (or whatever file format Xbox is using) matches exactly, block it. Ok, you can then put random data in parts of the file to make it not match. Microsoft could then come it with a more sophisticated check, to see if the code "looks" like an emulator. But this would likely give false positives, and would add a delay when installing a new build. This would annoy developers who are constantly recompiling their code. They could also impose restrictions on who can get a developer account. For example, they could require you to have a registered company. But this would stop a lot of up and coming developers who are just playing around. All in all, going further than they have so far would likely cost more than it's worth for them.
@Theraider-ki6ez Жыл бұрын
@@Gameboygenius Yup when registering for the developer mode, they do ask for a company name so it could be a start for them to regulate it all, hopefully not.

I wonder if Alyanna is just guessing or if that's accurate. Seems insane to block emulators for something you *might* do with it, relating to Nintendo. What if you block video players because you *might* have a pirated movie and Disney has a problem with that??
