Hi there, I live in Toronto and the tipping culture here is getting out of control. Some restaurants have increased the minimum tipping rate to 18%, and some even to 22%. My craziest experience was when I bought french fries from a food truck. When I made the payment, I didn't notice that a 15% tip was automatically added to the total bill, so I paid. When I collected the receipt, I realized the tip had been added without my consent. I told the cashier that I was not willing to pay the tip as there was no service involved. The lady looked at me angrily and threw some coins at me. I was furious. The tipping culture here is out of control! There have been reports that some restaurant owners are unwilling to pay salaries to their waiters, instead transferring this responsibility to the customers, which is unreasonable.

Tipping culture is an import from the US. Thank them!

@@treepazr4270 However, Canada is experiencing even more issues now, and many businessmen here, like those at Loblaws, lack corporate ethics and responsibility...😮💨

Wow that’s crazy are they even allowed to do that ?? Luckily in Vancouver I haven’t experience that yet but it’s getting close to that too but usually it has a hidden option of others at the bottom of the tip percentage selection after 15 %,18%,20%,22% and others in small letters lol 😂 so sneaky !
The bird on loonies is not a Canada goose but a common loon...

The tip persentages show on the card machine are just the "recommended" options. Tips is not manditory especially on take-out. However, 10% of tips is kinda cultural for service appreciation.
I will only tips 15% to 20% when the service is good; If it's bad 10% or less. In the USA tipping is not the law; it's more like a good things to do or kindness or you will be given a name like A Good Tippers etc.

For mainstream restaurants, the minimum tip is 15%, not 10%. However, since last year, many mainstream restaurants have raised the minimum default tip to 18% already. In the hospitality industry, including food courier like Ubereat, DoorDash, workers live on tip. So for Hong Kongers, please be generous in tipping. Unlike Hong Kong, most of the time, we just leave the change as tip. Or even no tip if the menu has clearly stated 10% service charge will be added automatically. Here in Canada, the only exception not to tip is when you order take away, for example, get a cup of coffee from the Timmies, McDonald's.
Paying tips is part of culture here to show your appreciation to the servicing staff. If you have any comment to the dinning experience, you better voice out to the restaurant but not use the tips to show your dissatisfaction on this regard.
