Like all opportunists indulged in power and fame, addiction to womanizing is merely a fringe benefit and complimentary, applicable also to Chiang and Mao
The phrase "Long live the people" often does not lead to the empowerment of the people, but rather to the rise of political giants. These political giants persecute in the name of justice, hate in the name of love, and weaken individuals in the name of protection. When people one day realize with horror that the promised liberation has not materialized and that even their original rights have disintegrated, they find themselves unable to resist. This is not only because all political means of resistance have long been disarmed, but also because people have surrendered their minds and become voiceless-"justice" has been monopolized by power, and dissatisfaction can only be expressed as resentment against "progress." Therefore, the deadlock created by populist democracy originates not so much from an individual's desire to monopolize power as from an attempt by an ideology to monopolize truth.
