We were still employed in HK when we were doing our reference check, so we didn’t have to pay the 6-month upfront.

You mean you were just visiting UK for couples of days and looked for the suitable apartment, and then back to Hk for work? Otherwise, how can still employ in HK but physically is living in UK?
