Background story of the original singer, Leslie Cheung,who is a multi award international star (actor, singer, songwriter). Leslie faces many issues with the media as he is a half-closeted gay actor from Hong Kong (he never admitted it publicly but everyone of his friends and fans knows it). He has played many romantic roles but the papparazzi gets to him. After acting his last movie in a psychotic suicidal character, He commited suicide on April Fool's Day 2003 by jumping off a hotel building.Hua once said that he admire Leslie for all his great works, as he is a pure artist with a great heart. He will sing this song once a year just to remind people of Leslie Cheung. Hua considers this song "perfect" on its own, hence he will perform it exactly as how Leslie sings it. No re-arrangement was ever made to this song. This song representedLeslie Cheung's life story. This song is also meaningful to Martians as this is the very first Chinese song he sang on stage during his Syperboy 2013 competition. It won him overnight attention and popularity after his performance as many critics thought of him as "weird" and wonders if he could even sing a proper chinese song. So yeah. This song has many meaning and sentimentality attached to it.

You can find the pronunciation of his name from the Hua Chenyu English subs. The lyrics actually says "even in a lonely dessert, the rose still blooms nakedly (without reservation)". Some feelings are lost in the translation, but the image of a rose blooms in a lonely dessert represents his (the artist's) wish to be able to show himself completely to the world despite that nobody in the world can or will understand him. He actually sings the song only once in a year in the end of his Mars Concert every year 2014-2017 because it is a very meaningful song to him. He really went through a lot of criticisms in the earlier days (and still now too) and people called him names (e.g. aliens, Martian boy, psychotic, etc.) simply because he is different (introvert, quiet, or for outer appearance) and because his music is too difficult for people to sing along in a KTV. I think you understand the feelings from this song too and I do hope that more people will appreciate him! His 3 albums (Quasimodo's Gift, Aliens, H) actually have a lot of good songs. I watched it again, and I like your reaction a lot. I discovered this music genius about a year ago, and I was overwhelmed by his versatility and personality. I like the emotion that he puts his heart into when he sings, which is very touching. He know how to use his voice and sing ability to convey his feelings to the audience. He can also adapt songs into music with his own style within only 24 hours. But his talent is not limited to this, the original music is the most important part of his talent. i like what i am. let the rose bloom the way it wants. even in a lonely desert, it blooms with no reservation. basically means be yourself, don care what other people think about you, live the way you like , not living the way other people like you to be.

Hua Chenyu is very brave and stay foot on his selection, "I am what I am" tell the whole message. He had gone through lots or criticism from his first debut as he is unique and different from the mainstream. He had work hard to go through all challenges and accepted by more and more people nowadays. The song choice he did for Singer 2018 represent his self progress and attitude towards life.
