Does banning China from acquiring technology truly work? Historical evidence suggests otherwise. For example, despite restrictions, China developed its own nuclear weapons. Similarly, exclusion from international space programs only spurred China to establish its own. It might be difficult for the average Westerner to appreciate the historical context, but China was the world's largest economy for centuries, contributing approximately a quarter of global GDP until the Opium Wars. From its perspective, the West was historically seen as "barbarians," while China considered itself the "Middle Kingdom," central to the world's order. This historical self-view may explain why external restrictions often serve as motivation for China to innovate independently.
@Bubba-z4s

Sanctions only work if carefully calibrated to make complying with them while still buying from abroad still a better option than just developing everything internally. If the sanctions cross that line - if the cost for complying with them is too high - then they have the opposite effect, spurning internal development and replacement of imports; it then works more or less like the kind of import tariffs meant to improve local production that the WTO often considers illegal. And the US grossly overplayed its hand. To make things worse, China is vengeful, which you can see in how it often reacts in a very heavy-handed way, for example crippling South Korean exports to China when it decided to install an US-supplied (and likely US-managed) air defense system capable of monitoring half of China's airspace. With semiconductors, China is aiming to cripple foreign companies that make "mature" chips - which are most chips, not just in volume but also in value - by creating enough internal production capacity to shut down most Chinese imports of those chips, something that -given that China is the biggest market in the world, by far, for those chips - will decimate revenues for foreign chipmakers while greatly increasing revenues (and, with it, research budgets) for Chinese chipmakers.
@zenastronomy
@zenastronomy 2 күн бұрын
@@FabioCapelachina only did that because usa and it's allies weaponised chips first. china was happy to use everyone else's chips while it built its own ones. there was no desire to destroy tsmc or Samsung or intel. if you wage war, expect retaliation. don't be a sissy and cry when you punch someone and they punch you back. west has become like the feminist who attack men and then when they get slapped back cry, he punched me, no fair, male pig etc.

Only those who can't create think technology are acquired. Technologies are created, not assets to be acquired, and to create technology you need to acquire talent. Worth noting that despite all the US sanctions and pressure on other countries to block Chinese 5G and networking gear, Huawei is not only the main supplier of 5G gear worldwide, it actually managed to increase its market share last year, and is expected to do so again this year. It's also ahead of Nokia and Ericson - the two main non-Chinese suppliers of 5G equipment - when it comes to 6G research and development. Also worth noting that a fully homegrown solution enables them to simply ignore US sanctions. More so when paired with non-dollar payments that don't go through banks in the US or any of its allies, and China being the main global player in international shipping and port management. I mean, if Huawei decides to supply Russia, Iran, Venezuela, etc, what can the US do? Apart from intercepting the shipments at sea in a blatant disregard of international conventions (which would risk starting WW3), there's little to nothing the US could do to prevent Huawei tech from reaching sanctioned countries, or to prevent Huawei from making the equipment it sells in the first place.

This is not far-fetched. The previous Brazilian administration illegally used Israeli-supplied systems to spy on the cellphones of critics, including reporters. What made them stop was that the Israeli systems stopped working, which *not* coincidentally happened at the same time local telecoms started installing Huawei 5G gear. Incidentally, I believe this is the main reason the US is pressuring countries around the world to ban Huawei from their 5G networks; the US can't pressure Huawei to include backdoors like it can pressure its own companies and those in allied nations, so a country using Huawei (or ZTE) communications gear severely degrade the US's intelligence capabilities in that country.

Double standard! Intel got so much subsidy, it's grant, it's investment. $8 billion is huge amount of money, I doubt one Chinese company can get that much from their government. When US and EU subsidize companies, it's investment, while if it occurs in China, even if the amount of money is much less, it's subsidy, it's a distortion of free market. Then they depict China as a low, exploiting their workers and it companies rely on government subsidy. What a hypocrisy!

Imagine in the Huawei board room, directors argued about the direction the co should take. Debate was fierce. Then the heavy-weighted chairman punched the table, "we'll go that way." So was the decision. The heavy-weighted chairman had a name Trump.

Some geeks comment like they have power: do North Americans and Europeans average consumers, care about Huawei ? Nope. Innovation is great, good for Chinese consumers but outside of China, only geeks will buy those phone.

It's not a China Us split as you make out. China is capable of advanced home grown tech too. Don't be so surprised. However China and the US are great manufacturing countries and great trading countries. Yes Apple's Cook did visit China 3 times this year. That's where Apple phones are made(with mostly Chinese tech inside). As Cook said in China this week, that Apple (speaking of his high regard to Chinese suppliers) that 'Apple could not do what it does without them." Apple has some 200 major suppliers, with more than 80 percent producing products in China, according to information at Apple's booth at the supply chain expo. During the visit, Cook met China's Minister of Industry and Information Technology Jin Zhuanglong, and told him that Apple would "continue to grow its investments in China and help the high-quality development of the supply chain," according to a statement by the ministry. (MIIT) The Apple CEO's first visit to China this year was in March, during which he opened a new flagship Apple store in Shanghai and said "there's no supply chain in the world that's more critical to us than China." The 2nd China International Supply Chain Expo is taking place now till November 30 in Beijing.

It's funny industry observers didn't think it's capable. I was a nobody who worked on and shaped how smartphone's architected today. I am Taiwanese Canadian. I can say there's less than a handful of people in US knows how smartphone actually works... just different kind of design thinking.

It's arrogance ad racism. Americans really think Chinese people are inferior, stupid and incapable of innovation. Americans really believe Chinese can only copy and steal (from Americans) and cannot create or innovate. They totally forget or ignore that Taiwanese are basically Chinese-ethnic, so whatever Taiwanese are capable of, (like having to come to dominate the chip industry,) so do other Chinese-ethnic in China, AND China has a much larger pool of Chinese-ethnic talents.

Chinese government has a strategic technology plan that is executing diligently year after year. They have the capacity to execute fast. In US we seem more worried about shareholder value and Wall Street, slowing down all investments necessary to produce within our boundaries.

When one think of a threat as a fear that it will harm you. In the US case, just because one of your trading partner becomes better than you at what you do, you suddenly feel threaten as the world think that you are no longer no. 1. You are going to lose face in front of everyone, and if you can call that a threat. It is more like incompetence, and more like the inability to innovate.

One thing we the americans lead in is the mouth that is set on auto mode to inform you exactly what are our goals, plans, and we answer the question of why, but never tell the truth to results and it's impacts that makes absolutely zero sense. So, the final stands we are taking with china no matter what we belive, was told,, and/or shown on a diamond studded plate does not change the fact that the tariffs, sancions, threats, rehtorics, and everything we think is true or false are all because, and as it was and is repeated many times from white house to congress as it's told to us, "there have never been a time where another country have surpassed america or is about to on all fields of everything" If this whole china vs america was put within the context of high school this issue would put us as that annoying, and very ignorant bully which everybody just can't stand.
