Doesn’t matter if we grew up with it or not. I’m just as hooked on my apps at 40 as my 9 year old is with her little kid stuff. Since I’ve decided to dopamine detox starting in a few days I’m limiting my daughter’s access as well. Her phone actually broke a few days ago and I’m taking it as a sign. I’ve seen her start to play and create and paint again.

i love how dr huberman acknowledges that there’s valuable information and networks in social media. i too am struggling with missing out on those information and connection but gets overwhelmed with social media. I’m a college student who’s vying for honors and I am afraid of the counter-productivity that dr huberman mentioned. My solution is deleting or deactivating apps like IG and FB during the semester and reactivating them during breaks. It’s been helpful ever since. I get to make the most out of my time in school without any distractions and get to be updated every break. This also got me asking to catch up with friends personally during breaks which got us engaged to deeper conversations rather than shallow convos online.

0:39 the first thing he says hits the nail on the head. Technology is not the problem. It's the services designed to produce addiction to them. Even tv shows, movies, and video games are at least forms of art and longer and deeper engagements and require more cognitive interactions. Social media is literally the bottom of the food chain and offers little to no real cognitive benefits because most of it is short form.

I’m seeing wild claims that they can heal all kinds of ailments, and I’m skeptical, but I was skeptical of light therapy. To be clear, I’m talking about *silent* clip-on devices that send “electromagnetic currents” through the body and target meridians, etc. (Healy). Would love to hear your thoughts!

So it’s interesting because of what I’m already interested in. So for me, it’s really not interesting when I get lost in doom scrolling - that’s just like when I used to binge. Didn’t really taste the food, just kept eating to avoid other things. So yeah, social media’s not interesting as a whole. But super interesting as a tool.
