I've been a concert flutist these many years , here in France.. While studying with the master J.P. Rampal .. a New York flutist played for me , H. law's album "Laws Cause" .. mid - 60's I loved it.. and have followed his eclectic career ever since... His music , playing.. compositions.. improvising...at 83 .. just wonderful.. I Send you many hugs .. Bravo maestro.. CH

Hello there. I too went to study (more accurately a master class) with Rampal. He wasn’t able at the last moment and suggested instead of withdrawing (money was involved) I continue on with Maxence Larrieu, a colleague. What ever happened to him? He was such a fine player but I spoke very poor French and was even poorer as a student. Went on from there, Marseille, to Aix en Provence Darius Milhaud conservatory to be quickly dismissed as an ok technical player but the least musical person they’ve ever heard, exceeded only by my lazy study and practicing habits. Ok I thought, one out of four, progress!

Você estudou com Jean Pierre Rampal??? Wow...!!!

Whats crazy is that Rampal appreciated Hubert Laws as well.
@percyvolnar80107 ай бұрын
@yishihara55527 Because I asked him if he ever listened to Hubert Laws. He smiled and said 'Yes, of course'. And he went on and on about how Hubert's sound is of the french school and because of this, no other jazz flute player sounds like he does. If you studied with Rampal or knew him, you know he only speaks up on flute players he likes and knows you can learn something from. His allegiance to the french school was very strict. But he was a great teacher with a great sense of humor.

I played a jazz concert about 13 yrs ago that he headlined and he killed it and his piccolo was breathtaking. His pianist told me about his physical regimen of running ,yoga, etc. his sound Ian’s articulation are still beautiful at 84. Im 74 and he inspires me to work on my health and play as long as I live,

@percyvolnar80107 ай бұрын
@@MrPatclark Yeah, but when Hubert played classical, the strict classical heads who were anti-jazz/blues gave him respect. And back then, they were NOT nice to jazz musicians attempting to play classical music. Hubert and Keith Jarrett were the only ones to pull this off back then. No other jazz flute player had a classical audience in their pocket as Hubert did. I liked Herbie Mann until i began studying flute and knew what to listen for. :)

I wish I would’ve been there to run the audio for the live stream. It is not so noticeable during the softer passages but listening to this over my studio monitors it is constantly overdriven, the gains are set too high. I would like to get an explanation from the sound technician why that is.
@connect1affect7119 ай бұрын
I wish so too. I had to stop listening, unfortunately
@mannykeller9 ай бұрын
@@connect1affect711 Too bad, me and my flute player wife love Hubert Laws and were so looking forward to hearing this concert. It would've been so simple to get a great sound into the live stream. I wear good sealing in ear monitors and could've dialed it in perfectly on a separate feed and provide top notch sound in the room as well . . . unless there was something wrong on the KZbin receiving end, who knows. I really would like to see a response from the sound engineer what the problem was. I wonder how the musicians feel about the audio on this? They all played so well.

@mannykeller yeah, I was just listening on old advent speakers and tried turning it down to background level, but even at that, I could tolerate the sound quality only so long.

Why did they cut the audio? Now I'm intrigued about who his friend was. They should have just cut the entire lead up to the introduction and no one would have heard him mention the friend.
Terrible sound recording. A disaster because he is such a great musician. Distortion all over the place. Did they not have the money for good microphones? Or was the engineer a newbie? Tragic waste.
