Waouuuu ! Mais c'est magnifique !!! Je découvre ce grand compositeur méconnu... il à composé un set de très belle pièces pour piano aussi ... en tout cas ces variations devraient figurer au répertoire de n'importe quel grand orchestre. Merci pour la découverte !

A work of real mastery of form and orchestration. It should be in the regular concert repertoire

Many memories associated with this work back to the 90s. I was an avid collector back then, before the digital days. Been a lover of all Brit music since I heard "The Planets" on KFAC/Los Angeles in 1963. In the throes of a viral fever..."What? There's music from other planets???"

One of the great underrated pieces of British or indeed world music. The Boult performances are in a league of their own, but any performance shows Parry's undisputed nastery of the form and the glorious inventions he weaves in each bar. Altogether glorious!

Super set of variations by a true English composer. The LPO under Bamert do a great job as with the symphonies. We should be proud of this music.

I have taken to this magnificent work from the very first moment I heard it. Yet it seems to grow in stature every time I hear it. IMO this is one of the best and most appealing set or orchestra variations in the repertoire, or a par with the Dvorak Symphonic Variations and perhaps even the Elgar Enigma Variations (though I know many will disagree on the latter). There really isn't a dull moment here - the orchestration, the inspired handling of the thematic material and the surefooted way of working up to the triumphant conclusion, everything seems just right. It is a work worthy to be programmed in concerts by the great orchestras and conductors.

Wow. This is beautiful. I'm 28 and very much enjoy classical music. Friends make fun of me sometimes but, fuck em. They don't know art when they hear it. lol I love smoking weed and lighting my fireplace and listening to classical music ✌🏼

They only make fun of you because they lack the artistic intelligence to appreciate "real" music. I like all kinds of music but "classical" is the cornerstone of all and will last long after pop etc has faded and become dated.

Music is music, and you seemed to have gained the ability to appreciate and enoy sublime music in many guises, good luck young man, well done-oh, & sod them

Heh. Try closing your eyes while listening :> A lot simpler than smoking weed and lighting your fireplace, but just as effective. Lets the music transport you.

Wonderful piece and very, very good performance. If someone like Brahms would have written this piece, it would be performed a lot more, since the quality of the music really is top-notch. Also, there is more than a hint towards the Enigma Variations here - since Elgar knew this work very well, he also conducted, this seems like a major source of inspiration for him!

A very fine piece indeed

Rather controlled performance, but a great work. Also owes something to Brahms and his variations, the episodic structure goes back to Beethoven and the 32 Variations in C minor.

Very much hearing a Brahms sound here. Thoroughly enjoyable. I have it on a NAXOS CD which is a bit more up tempo than this performance

Cosa dire di questa composizione: un capolavoro di orchestrazione. I critici però hanno giudicato Parry troppo 'conservatore' e favorito Elgar, per me in parte giustamente e in parte no .

Great performance. Okay work. Not special or deeply invented!! Of the period.
@sandonlowe72139 жыл бұрын
I'd disagree there. The structure of the work is very similar to Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini, which also forms several thematic episodes out of multiple variations running into each other. The structure makes the piece greater than the sum of its parts, and Parry's was written 37 years earlier than Rachmaninoff's masterwork.
