Blues isn't about clean notes or fast hands or perfect technique, people who critique this guys playing simply don't understand.

...errrr, simple? i saw him on stage at the end of the '70 with Buddy Guy, & you know what, this evening was not simple to Buddy ( ooooh, no!). But what an evening for the audience. Simply unforgettable. At this time he played more " technically", & he knew how to do.

Anyone who talks like that, I'd ask them to play a long with some of his stuff he did with Wolf and we'll see how good they sound. His bends, vibrato, were completely unique he had his own sound for sure

I had a rare privilege to play with Hubert, about 2005, in New Port Richey, FL at a venue called Bourbon Street. I was invited by Pat Ramsey to fill in for his bass player who wasn't feeling well that aftrrnoon. The set, which followed a blues festival in Pasco, featured Pat Ramsey, T.C. Carr and Willie Big Eye Smith on dueling harmonicas. Hubert and Bob Margolin played guitar. Dennis McCarthy was the drummer and I played bass. Hubert was an inovator, a legend, and a huge influence on Clapton, Hendrix, Page, and so many others. God rest his soul. I'm honored to have played with him.

I could listen to this man play the guitar for 10 years straight without a single second break. The absolute passion and soul and beauty in his technique is unparalleled. There's nothing better than listening to the blues, it moves your soul.

Tone is all about the fingers. Hubert played a lot of axes over the years. But those fingers always made that sound that was perfectly Hubert. I started with the Eric Claptons, Jeff Becks and Jimmy Pages of the British rock and roll scene. Love them dearly, thanks to them though I found guys like Hubert who were incidently from the part of the country I was from. I can't fathom how awful it was to have been black in the South back then, it's still not as easy as it should be, but the fact that they were birthed from the same deltas and bayous as I was inspires me to keep the tradition alive.

Hubert Sumlins guitar and Howlin Wolfs voice was one of the most perfect combinations ever.. RIP and may we learn the magic that came so naturally from them!

the tone is so unique, nothing like a typical Les Paul would sound- completely bone dry and without any boost, rawer than a Strat but wobblier than a Gretsch . What a player.

I know one thing, he was a happy, go-lucky guy who lived his dream, and in the end, isn't that what it is all about? Look at that guitar! How can you pick that thing up and not be happy? Which is one on Paul Reed Smith's "Words To Live By" - "I have never seen someone play the guitar who is not happy". Amen to that!

Really classy...to the ignorant bastards who are critical of an elder Hubert with arthritis and decades of life behind him, educate yourselves and seek out his playing in his prime: Howlin' Wolf's classic sides, etc. I'll take Hubert on "Killing Floor" over some navel gazing shredder anyday! a joke? Hubert Sumlin? First time i saw this guy was 2 years ago (when i was 16), and i knew instantly that he's worth more than so many other guitarists out there. He plays with soul and passion! Take all your techniques, sweep like a motherfucker - it won't compare to love and passion in the end! Even if you don't agree, he was old as hell and still played! - rip

@AdvancedBBear Here's the thing. For every Hubert who got famous, there are a bunch of old boys around who played as good or better. Now they're all dying too from old age, but some of them are still around, and some of their 2nd generation students are taking their place, and they play damned good too. Just get out there to your local blues club. Granted there are a lot of bands who think SRV is the only blues... but there are others out there with taste too. :p
