@@00Zy99 At the time this was new, on roads without street lights if you parked a car at the side of the road you were supposed to show a red light to the rear and a white light to the front on either side of the car.

Imagine if your daily commute is 20 miles of twisty B-roads in this, with lively engine and exhaust noises and with this brilliant finish. I would be extremely happy.

Yeah, I have a Ford XR6 (Think Betty with a bit more style and punch) and I was seriously disappointed when I put it on a twisty mountain road and tried to push it! Compared to my long lost Mini, it was a nightmare!
@philipgrice10267 ай бұрын
For five years I had a 20-mile commute, each way, between Henlow and the AC Delco factory in Dunstable. I drove an ex-works 1071 Mini Cooper S along mostly narrow country lanes, with a couple of short stretches of A road and B road thrown in. It was an absolute blast! There were a few places where I would exceed 90 mph, traffic permitting, and after a year or so I knew every passing place and likely gate from where a farmer might back out pulling a trailer full of straw bales. And they did. I've had the good fortune to own and drive some fantastic cars over the years, but no commute could ever be as exhilarating as that one. The job paid well, but the company sucked. I was actually sorry to be recruited and move away, but only until my 'commuting' took me travelling all over the world in different cars in multiple countries. Occasionally I wonder what that particular cross-country commute would be like today. Probably awful, I suspect. Too many slow cars with even slower drivers clogging up some great lanes we once used for car club night rallys.

My late godfather Ernie Boxall worked for Wood and Pickett and made the wood dashes for the mini conversions as well as being registered to modify Rolls Royce interiors. I remember him saying that the design was a shrunken mk10 Jaguar dash with assistance from Smith's with the shrunken gauges. He also told me that BL would only supply complete cars as W&P would have preferred a shell and running gear.

Brings back sooooo many memories! The rorty exhaust, whine of the gearbox , it’s all there. Used to have a 1380cc, 12G940 head , twin SUs , and a 731 cam. Acceleration, incredible. You mentioned Downton Engineering, there was an eccentric character if ever there was one. Daniel Richmond knew how to tune cars though. His students were Gordon Spice who went on to race 3.0 Capris, Ralph Broad from Broadspeed Engineering, Jan Odur who became Janspeed Engineering , David Vizard who wrote various Mini tuning books , what a line up !
@Roger.Coleman19497 ай бұрын
Martin , I gather Daniel's wife , April , was the formidable businesswoman and smelt ' money ' when his talents in engine tuning became obviously apparent .Issigonis , not an advocate of making his cars go faster , eventually had to give in under pressure from George Harriman of BMC , to adopt faster models and after a drink or three at the local pub that Daniel frequented , BMC Special Tuning came about.

I had a 1380 Avonbar engine in a Metro back in the late 80s; lightened and balanced, tuftrided crank/flywheel, omega pistons, gas-flowed, big valve head, with a 1¾ su on a swanneck and RC40 based exhaust. My that thing could shift, yet below about 3500 revs it was as docile as any shopping trolley. I always wanted to try one in a mini but never managed it. I had it rebuilt by what turned out to be a cowboy and it blew up while still running in 😢

The mini is said to be one of the most modified cars ever. I always loved the Wood and Pickett mini's as well as Crayfords as well as the more recent David Brown specials. The fact you could spec a humble mini as such a luxury item is so amazing. I think someone even had one with wicker doors (Peter Sellars possibly). They are just a cool little car for everyone. I'm lucky enough to own a 1969 mini Jem kit car and it basically uses mini mechanicals in a fibreglass coupe body and I love it for its bonkersness (is that even a word 🙂) thanks for sharing such a fabulous car with us all she's a beauty!!

Also , the polished wiper aerofoils as on this beautiful car, ' to stop lift at speed ' !.I'm recommisioning my recently acquired 1961 Austin Seven Mini and busy resourcing all those period extras.

I was reading about Wood & Pickett earlier today in an old copy of Classic Retro Modern, so jumped at your video. What a lovely car. Pedant alert: the licence plate is not period authentic. As a 1973 car, it would have originally worn mandatory white front/yellow rear plates. The white/yellow plates were introduced in 1968 and most people opted for them before they became mandatory because it made your car look modern and new. Nowadays the black plates with white letters look cool and retro. But in the 70s they were an “old banger indicator”.
